The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act had to be passed into law when it was. It require nearly the entire focus politically for a year. It demanded participation by all Democrats and a few Independents. It had to happen in the first year of President Obama's presidency with a super majority in the legislature.
We did it!
We passed a health care reform law and we funded it. We lost some Congressional seats in 2010 and the Republicans have potentially won seats in 2014 because of the chronic assault against the ACA. It was a faux assault and they should be ashamed of themselves.
I remember that year like it was yesterday. I remember in the early hours of the House vote and the final gavel of then Speaker Pelosi. Then on to the Senate and the arrival the wife of the the Late US Senator Edward Kennedy. There were Senators in the hallways congratulating each other. It was magnificent. What if we didn't do the hard work which culled Democrats in subsequent elections? What if political careers were put before the much needed reform law?
I congratulate all the Senators, the House members and the President in risking it all after 2008 to pass this life saving legislation. It was a brave path and today the country is far better of than ever before when it comes to securing health care.
Everyone was great. Absolutely wonderful. Americans that are alive today because of this law have no words to their new reality.
