Tornadoes Kill 1 in Iowa College Town
Staff and agencies14 April, 2006
By TODD DVORAK and JOE NUGENT, s 16 minutes ago
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Tornadoes tore across a university campus overnight, ripping walls off a church and sorority house, crushing houses and cars, and killing a woman in a mobile home southeast of town.
"There was debris flying everywhere inside the house," Fortman told ABC‘s "Good Morning America" Friday. "I couldn‘t go down stairs because there was debris and glass flying up the stairs, so I just hid in a telephone booth we have in our house and I just hid there crying."
The twisters swept across eastern Iowa, with the worst damage in a path from Iowa City southeast through the small town of Nichols, about 20 miles away, the National Weather Service said.
He said the tornado hits farms, knocked a tractor-trailer off a road, then hit the mobile home with a man and woman inside.

Appeals Court Slaps L.A. Over Arrests of Homeless
By Henry Weinstein and Cara DiMassa, Times Staff Writers12:32 PM PDT, April 14, 2006

Los Angeles' policy of arresting homeless people for sitting, lying or sleeping on public sidewalks as "an unavoidable consequence of being human and homeless without shelter" violates the constitutional prohibition against cruel and punishment, a federal appeals court ruled today. The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 2-1 decision, decided in favor of six homeless persons, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California. The suit challenged the city's practice of arresting persons for violating a municipal ordinance, which states that "no person shall sit, lie or sleep in or upon any street, sidewalk or public way."

Resignation Building

What Rumsfeld knew
Interviews with high-ranking military officials shed new light on the role Rumsfeld played in the harsh treatment of a Guantánamo detainee.
By Michael Scherer and Mark Benjamin /
Salon
April 14, 2006 Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was personally involved in the late 2002 interrogation of a high-value al-Qaida detainee known in intelligence circles as "the 20th hijacker." He also communicated weekly with the man in charge of the interrogation, Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller, the controversial commander of the Guantánamo Bay detention center.
During the same period, detainee Mohammed al-Kahtani suffered from what Army investigators have called "degrading and abusive" treatment by soldiers who were following the interrogation plan Rumsfeld had approved. Kahtani was forced to stand naked in front of a female interrogator, was accused of being a homosexual, and was forced to wear women's underwear and to perform "dog tricks" on a leash. He received 18-to-20-hour interrogations during 48 of 54 days.

"My belief is Rumsfeld does not really understand the dynamic of counterinsurgency warfare."-- Maj. Gen. Charles H. Swannack Jr.

More Retired Generals Call for Rumsfeld's Resignation
By David S. Cloud and Eric Schmitt /
New York Times
WASHINGTON, April 13 — The widening circle of retired generals who have stepped forward to call for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's resignation is shaping up as an unusual outcry that could pose a significant challenge to Mr. Rumsfeld's leadership, current and former generals said on Thursday.
Maj. Gen. Charles H. Swannack Jr., who led troops on the ground in Iraq as recently as 2004 as the commander of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division, on Thursday became the fifth retired senior general in recent days to call publicly for Mr. Rumsfeld's ouster. Also Thursday, another retired Army general, Maj. Gen. John Riggs, joined in the fray.
"We need to continue to fight the global war on terror and keep it off our shores," General Swannack said in a telephone interview. "But I do not believe Secretary Rumsfeld is the right person to fight that war based on his absolute failures in managing the war against Saddam in Iraq."

Retired general: ‘Uplifting’ if Rumsfeld removed
Six former senior officers have publicly called for change due to Iraq
NBC News
WASHINGTON - A retired Army general on Friday continued the volleys of criticism against Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his handling of the Iraq war, telling NBC News that “a fresh start in the Department of Defense ... would be incredibly uplifting” for the armed forces.
Retired Maj. Gen. John Batiste, who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in Iraq until last November, appeared on NBC’s “Today” show to reiterate criticisms he leveled earlier this week.
Batiste said Rumsfeld had “failed to build the peace” in Iraq, and criticized “a leadership style which is intimidating, abusive. There was not a two-way street of respect.”

Ex-General: Rumsfeld Deserves Criticism
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Retired Maj. Gen. John Batiste, one of several high-ranking military men urging the ouster of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, said Friday there is no coordinated effort to get him fired, calling a recent series of critical statements "absolutely coincidental."
"I have not talked to the other generals," Batiste, interviewed from Rochester, N.Y., said on NBC"s "Today" show. Nevertheless, he said he thinks the clamor for Rumsfeld to step down is "happening for a reason."
Batiste, who commanded the 1st Infantry Division forces in Iraq, said he declined an opportunity to get a promotion to the rank of lieutenant general and return to the wartorn country as the No. 2 U.S. military officer because he could not accept Rumsfeld's tough management style.

President Bush Expresses Full Support, Appreciation for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld
Earlier today I spoke with Don Rumsfeld about ongoing military operations in the Global War on Terror. I reiterated my strong support for his leadership during this historic and challenging time for our Nation.
I reiterated my strong support for his leadership during this historic and challenging time for our Nation.
The Department of Defense has been tasked with many difficult missions. Upon assuming office, I asked Don to transform the largest department in our government. That kind of change is hard, but our Nation must have a military that is fully prepared to confront the dangerous threats of the 21st Century. Don and our military commanders have also been tasked to take the fight to the enemy abroad on multiple fronts.
I have seen first-hand how Don relies upon our military commanders in the field and at the Pentagon to make decisions about how best to complete these missions. Secretary Rumsfeld's energetic and steady leadership is exactly what is needed at this critical period. He has my full support and deepest appreciation.

Iraq speeches have done little to buoy war support
By Richard Benedetto /
USA Today
WASHINGTON — Like a man on a treadmill, President Bush has gotten almost nowhere making speeches over the past seven months to boost public support for the war in Iraq. Since Bush began a round of Iraq speeches last fall, approval for his handling of Iraq has remained stuck, with about a third of the nation approving what he's doing.
Shortly before the speeches began in late September, 32% of Americans approved of Bush's handling of Iraq, according to a Sept. 16-18 USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll.
The rating inched up as high as 39% in the ensuing months, but the latest poll, taken April 7-9, showed that approval had dropped back to 32%.

U.S. Building Its Largest Embassy in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The fortress-like compound rising beside the Tigris River here will be the largest of its kind in the world, the size of Vatican City, with the population of a small town, its own defense force, self-contained power and water, and a precarious perch at the heart of Iraq's turbulent future.
The new U.S. Embassy also seems as cloaked in secrecy as the ministate in Rome.
"We can't talk about it. Security reasons," Roberta Rossi, a spokeswoman at the current embassy, said when asked for information about the project.

Cheney Authorized Leak Of CIA Report, Libby Says
By Murray Waas /
National Journal
Vice President Dick Cheney directed his then-chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, on July 12, 2003 to leak to the media portions of a then-highly classified CIA report that Cheney hoped would undermine the credibility of former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, a critic of the Bush administration's Iraq policy, according to Libby's grand jury testimony in the CIA leak case and sources who have read the classified report.
The March 2002 intelligence report was a debriefing of Wilson by the CIA's Directorate of Operations after Wilson returned from a CIA-sponsored mission to Niger to investigate claims, later proved to be unfounded, that Saddam Hussein had attempted to procure uranium from the African nation, according to government records.
The debriefing report made no mention of Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, then a covert CIA officer, or any role she may have played in her husband's selection by the CIA to go to Niger, according to two people who have read the report.

China fears drive big US arms projects
By Jim Wolf /
Reuters
WASHINGTON - U.S. fears of a rising China are spurring billions of dollars worth of weapons projects, from nuclear-fueled attack submarines to fighter jets to destroyers.
Even as President George W. Bush prepares to welcome President Hu Jintao to the White House on Thursday with full military honors, Washington is factoring in potential conflicts over such sore spots as Taiwan, competition for scarce resources and any threat to its predominance in Asia.
"Of the major and emerging powers, China has the greatest potential to compete militarily with the United States and field disruptive military technologies that could over time offset traditional U.S. military advantages absent U.S. counter strategies," the U.S. Defense Department said in a long-term strategy review released in February.

Neil Young, Son of Famed Reporter, Records "Impeach the President" Song
By E&P Staff /
Editor & Publisher
NEW YORK As an E&P "Pressing Issues" column recently noted, rock star Neil Young is the son of a famed Canadian journalist, so it should not surprise many that he recently recorded a song in California with a very reportorial -- or at least pundit -- feel to it.
It’s called “Impeach the President,” so there can be little question what it is about.
Apparently it was recorded with a 100-voice choir. Rumors have circulated the past few days on the Web, but E&P has tracked down the strongest confirmation in a blog kept by Sherman Oaks, Ca. musician/singer Alicia Morgan.

LET’S GET SOMETHING STRAIGHT.

The Bush Administration is fighting a desperate war here in the USA and they are pullling out the plugs on everything to try and turn around and distract this country from the fact they are bunch of criminals. They have been toying with this government and it's 'AFFECT' on the people to WIN political opinion in their favor.

IN REGARD TO THE IRAQ INVASION AND WMD:

There is ONE rather GLARING truth that the news media seems to IGNORE CHRONICALLY.

There were United Nations' Inspectors ON THE GROUND in Iraq long before Rumsfeld and his 'Hot Dog' General, "What's His Name" - Tommy Franks started their "Shock and Awe" bombing of Baghdad.

There were United Nations' Inspectors ON THE GROUND in Iraq ...

Administration Pushed Notion of Banned Iraqi Weapons Despite Evidence to Contrary
By Joby Warrick / Washington Post
On May 29, 2003, 50 days after the fall of Baghdad, President Bush proclaimed a fresh victory for his administration in Iraq: Two small trailers captured by U.S. and Kurdish troops had turned out to be long-sought mobile "biological laboratories." He declared, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction."

YESTERDAY, a CNN Journalist, "Old What's His Name?" Oh, yeah, David Ensor came out and stated "The Intelligence was Bad and the President Cannot Be Held for it's use...Blah, Blah, Blah..."

The USA Intelligence ESTIMATES...

The USA Intelligence ESTIMATES were presented to the United Nations' Security Council as evidence of WMD and that is why the inspectors were sent in the first place. It didn't matter how paranoyd The Bush Oval Office had become because they were in over their heads with 911 and the Nation's Security; the United Nations' HONORED all those concerns and had United Nations' Inspectors ON THE GROUND in Iraq.

That is why they were sent. They weren't sent just to provide a 'SHOW' preceding invasion. They were sent to 'CHECK' the facts of WMD on the GROUND against any ESTIMATES, any RECORDS, any REPLY by the Hussein government.

The USA was about to invade Iraq out of impatience and the United Nations went to prove the grounds or lack of grounds for the invasion.

The United Nations is an impartial party and that is why they were involved and NOT David Kay from the beginning.

What is so hard about this?

George Walker Bush and Richard Cheney invaded a disarmed country when there were United Nations' Inspectors ON THE GROUND in Iraq and they were finding NOTHING !

Bush and Cheney invaded BEFORE the final findings of the United Nations' Security Council.

They acted AGAINST the bill handed down by the USA Legislature stating invasion was a last resort. We hadn't reached that point YET !

He declared, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction."
The claim, repeated by top administration officials for months afterward, was hailed at the time as a vindication of the decision to go to war. But even as Bush spoke, U.S. intelligence officials possessed powerful evidence that it was not true.
A secret fact-finding mission to Iraq -- not made public until now -- had already concluded that the trailers had nothing to do with biological weapons. Leaders of the Pentagon-sponsored mission transmitted their unanimous findings to Washington in a field report on May 27, 2003, two days before the president's statement.

White House hotly denies report on Iraq WMD
WASHINGTON (
Reuters) - The White House on Wednesday angrily denied a newspaper report that suggested President George W. Bush in 2003 declared the existence of biological weapons laboratories in Iraq while knowing it was not true.
On May 29, 2003, Bush hailed the capture of two trailers in Iraq as mobile biological laboratories and declared, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction."
The report in The Washington Post said a Pentagon-sponsored fact-finding mission had already concluded that the trailers had nothing to do with biological weapons. The newspaper cited government officials and weapons experts who participated in the secret mission or had direct knowledge of it.
The Post said the group's unanimous findings had been sent to the Pentagon in a field report, two days before the president's statement.
