Severe winter weather alert.

Montana and Idaho

The snow is accumulating followed by two days of severe freeze.

It is a state of emergency.

Do not drive. Stay home.

Road conditions: dial 511

People and animals should be secured when possible.

Chance of extended loss of power. Be prepared for survival for the next three days.

Calderas implode before they explode.

Yellowstone is imploding.

Winter is coming. Tourists should stay out of the park.

Large explosive volcanic eruptions (click here) are commonly associated with caldera subsidence and ignimbrites deposited by pyroclastic currents. Volumes and thicknesses of intracaldera and outflow ignimbrites (click here) at 76 explosive calderas around the world indicate that subsidence is commonly simultaneous with eruption, such that large proportions of the pyroclastic currents are trapped within the developing basins. As a result, much of an eruption must penetrate its own deposits, a process that also occurs in large, debris-filled vent structures even in the absence of caldera formation and that has been termed “gargling eruption.” Numerical modeling of the resulting dynamics shows that the interaction of preexisting deposits (fill) with an erupting (juvenile) mixture causes a dense sheath of fill material to be lifted along the margins of the erupting jet. This can cause an eruption that would otherwise produce a buoyant plume and fallout deposits to instead form pyroclastic currents as the dense sheath drives pulsing jet behavior. Increasing thickness of fill amplifies the time variation in jet height. Increasing the fill grain size relative to that of the juvenile particles can result in a much higher jet due to poorer mixing between the dense sheath and the dilute jet core. In all cases, material collapses along the entire height of the dense sheath rather than from the top of a simple fountain. These gargle dynamics provide strong backing for processes that have been inferred to result in intraplinian ignimbrites and simultaneous deposition from high- and low-energy pyroclastic currents....

Saudi Arabia needs to begin peace talks with Iran.

Hatred and war isn't the way to go with Iran or any of the Shia Crescent.

Genocide is not okay.

I would like to say I am surprised civilian areas are being targeted, but, the attacks on the Shia have also been merciless. I would expect the holy men and women of the Shi'ite faith would reflect on the attacks within Saudi Arabia and decide about such violence. It isn't doing anything, except, fuel Israel's goals.

In an interview, (click here) anthropologist Marieke Brandt analyzes the ideology, power structures, military strength and pan-Islamic ambitions of the Houthis, the Yemeni movement that, in just 13 years, established itself as a quasi-state entity....

...The movement began in the 1990s in Saada, in northern Yemen [near the Saudi border], primarily aimed at reasserting Zaydi identity (click here) – a minority branch of Shia Islam, prevalent in northern Yemen – in the face of growing Salafi-Wahhabi [radical Sunni movements] influence, which was promoted by Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government.

In 2001, under the leadership of Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi, a splinter group broke away from the Zaydi revival, which is how that splinter group came to be known as "the Houthis." Al-Houthi wanted more than a mere cultural revival. He envisioned an active movement that would proactively confront the problems facing Zaydis and the Islamic community at large. Palestine occupied a central place in al-Houthi's thinking from the very beginning, as a symbol of the humiliation of Muslims by Israel and the imperial West. The movement's slogan also dates from this period: "God is great, death to America, death to Israel, curse the Jews, victory to Islam."...

"...we are all in danger..."

Fantastic film only Tom Cruise and John Goodman could pull off.

The film is satirical with multiple subplots. It is fantastic. I plan to see it again and maybe even a third time. All the actors and actresses did a great job. The film is loaded with testosterone.

Applause, applause.

As far as I am concerned the critics are wrong.

A Texan would understand the petroleum mess better than anyone.
