Whoever heard of a hospital with a budget surplus?

Jackson Health Care sees a need for continued budget surpluses to plan for future need.

More patients (click here) and more taxpayer support added up to a record $14 million budget surplus in June for Jackson Health System, Miami-Dade’s public hospital network, providing critical reserves for future needs, including expanded operations and reduced government funding.

The June results bring Jackson’s total surplus to $68.7 million, and raise projections for the year-end margin to reach $70 million through Sept. 30.

In a report to the Public Health Trust that oversees Jackson, CEO Carlos Migoya attributed the strong showing to an increase in patient services, including more surgeries and outpatient procedures than the prior year. But Jackson also has been riding a wave of swelling sales tax support that has exceeded expectations by an average of $1.7 million a month....
