The temperature distribution across Europe is very abrupt. Approximately 47 degrees north latitude is where there is a transition from cold to warm temperatures. When the Arctic air mass arrives I would expect the countries along the Mediterranean to be impacted with much colder temperatures. It would effect the growing season and potential harvests.
There isn't enough lower troposphere water vapor to allow for a 'normal' transition between the seasons, so the available water vapor at the Equator is being pulled into colder denser air to transition the heat distribution with solar migration south.
