Filmmaker receives career achievement prize

Michael Moore while filming "Bowling for Columbine"

His latest and some say his greatest, "SiCKO" (click here). I just don't agree there is one film, in context of impact to uphold 'the truth' any greater than another by Moore. His engaging style, his determination, his dogged pursuit of undermining 'mind think' while replacing it with the 'Dignity of Dissent'. If it weren't for the masterful Michael, the USA would be convinced it were a country needing to be in servitude to it's military while accepting impoverishment as a reality. I am convinced of that reality.

Michael Moore has done this country a greater service than it can measure, even if people oppose him, while he 'stood the watch' and that remains the most important aspect of any of his films and pursuits. A man speaking the words of the powerless, WITHIN the most powerful country on Earth, is more powerful himself in the greater world than anyone wanted and wants to say. He is opposed by the powerful because he is 'the truth.' You have to love him and admire him as empowers not only those he is a fellow citizen, but also a global audience that feels free to dissent against the USA that might not otherwise.

Congratulations Michael on the recognition of a career unsurpassed by anyone else and thank you.

From the Desk of Donald Rumsfeld . . .
In Sometimes-Brusque 'Snowflakes,' He Shared Worldview, Shaped Policy
By Robin Wright /
Washington Post
In a series of internal musings and memos to his staff, then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld argued that Muslims avoid "physical labor" and wrote of the need to "keep elevating the threat," "link Iraq to Iran" and develop "bumper sticker statements" to rally public support for an increasingly unpopular war.
The memos, often referred to as "snowflakes," shed light on Rumsfeld's brusque management style and on his efforts to address key challenges during his tenure as Pentagon chief. Spanning from 2002 to shortly after his resignation following the 2006 congressional elections, a sampling of his trademark missives obtained yesterday reveals a defense secretary disdainful of media criticism and driven to reshape public opinion of the Iraq war.
Rumsfeld, whose sometimes abrasive approach often alienated other Cabinet members and White House staff members, produced 20 to 60 snowflakes a day and regularly poured out his thoughts in writing as the basis for developing policy, aides said. The memos are not classified but are marked "for official use only."

Pelosi says Democrats plan 'repetition of the same' on Iraq
By Mike Baker /
Associated Press
RALEIGH, N.C. - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, approaching the first anniversary of an election that lifted her party into power based largely on its opposition to the war in Iraq, said Friday that Democrats will renew efforts to end the conflict with "a repetition of the same."
Speaking at Meredith College, Pelosi said Democrats in the House will file a new proposal next week that would seek to withdraw combat troops by the end of 2008. It would restrict war funding after that date to pay only for embassy protection, targeted counterterrorism efforts and the limited training of Iraqi forces.
But Pelosi conceded later that the measure would mimic unsuccessful attempts of the past year to reduce America's involvement in the war, and she gave no indication that she thinks the new attempt will succeed.
"You won't see a lot that is new," Pelosi said. "It's just a repetition of the same."

Kucin
ich Will Introduce Privileged Resolution To Force Up Or Down Vote On Cheney Impeachment
Washington, Nov 2 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) announced today that he will be offering a privileged resolution on the House floor next week that will bring articles of impeachment against the Vice President, Richard B. Cheney.
“The momentum is building for impeachment,” Kucinich said. “Millions of citizens across the nation are demanding Congress rein in the Vice President’s abuse of power.
“Despite this groundswell of opposition to the unconstitutional conduct of office, Vice President Cheney continues to violate the U.S. Constitution by insisting the power of the executive branch is supreme.
“Congress must hold the Vice President accountable. The American people need to let Members of Congress know how they feel about this. The Vice President continues to use his office to advocate for a continued occupation of Iraq and prod our nation into a belligerent stance against Iran. If the Vice President is successful, his actions will ensure decades of disastrous consequences.”
The privileged resolution has priority status for consideration on the House floor. Once introduced, the resolution has to be brought to the floor within two legislative days, although the House could act on it immediately. Kucinich is expected to bring it to the House floor on Tuesday, November 6.

Protesters Interrupt Vice President Cheney's Speech
Two protesters interrupted Vice President Dick Cheney during a speech at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas on Friday. At the same time, demonstrators gathered outside of the hotel to protest the war in Iraq.
Cheney was giving a speech on policy issues during an event presented by the World Affairs Council of Dallas Fort Worth.
One woman wearing a shirt that read "Bring our Troops Home Now" yelled: "Out of Iraq now! Don't attack Iran."
Security escorted her out.
Minutes later, another protester stood up, waving an extended index finger at Cheney, objecting to any potential attack on Iran. He also was led out.

Poll: Vermont Wants Bush, Cheney Impeached
Nearly Two-Thirds Of State's Likely Voters Want President, VP Removed Before Term Ends
BURLINGTON, Vt., Nov. 1, 2007
(CBS) Earlier this year, town meetings across Vermont asked citizens if impeachment proceedings should be initiated against the president and vice president. Thirty-seven towns voted yes, and the Senate approved a resolution calling for impeachment.
Now a statewide poll conducted by CBS affiliate WCAX in Burlington, Vt. posed the question to 400 likely voters. Sixty-one percent said they would be in favor of Congress beginning impeachment proceedings against President Bush. Thirty-three percent opposed it, and 6% were not sure.
The numbers for Vice President Cheney differed only slightly: Sixty-four percent favored impeachment, while 31% opposed it.
Seventy-five percent of respondents said they categorized the president's performance as "fair" or "poor."
"I'm really overjoyed by this," said Jimmy Leas, a South Burlington lawyer who has been a vocal advocate of impeachment. He told WCAX correspondent Kate Duffy that the poll shows "here in Vermont, nearly two-thirds of the public understand we have a serious problem, and the way to address this is to remove the officials who are usurping power."

Health Sector Puts Its Money on Democrats
By Raymond Hernandez and Robert Pear /
New York Times
WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 — In a reversal from past election cycles, Democratic candidates for president are outpacing Republicans in donations from the health care industry, even as the leading Democrats in the field offer proposals that have caused deep anxiety in some of its sectors.
Hospitals, drug makers, doctors and insurers gave candidates in both parties more than $11 million in the first nine months of this year, according to an analysis of campaign finance records done for The New York Times by the Center for Responsive Politics, an independent group that tracks campaign finance.
In all, the Democratic presidential candidates have raised about $6.5 million from the industry, compared with nearly $4.8 million for the Republican candidates. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York has amassed the most of any candidate, even as she calls for changes to the health care system that could pose serious financial challenges to private insurers, drug companies and other sectors.

I remember very clearly the daily fearmongering led by FOX as they cheered for war with Iraq. The 24/7 images, sound effects, yelling and threatening were an ever-present drumbeat for war. We had to invade, and we had to invade now.. anyone who didn't see that was a traitor. They viciously attacked those of us who worked to get out the truth.
You'd think that with the complete failure in Iraq, those days would be behind us. Sadly, you'd be wrong.
FOX wants war with Iran.
It's almost too ridiculous to believe, but it's shockingly real. We've already compiled over 4 hours of FOX footage... the same images, sound effects, yelling and threatening that led the U.S. to invade Iraq is happening right now to sell a war with Iran. They are saying the exact same things!!
Here is the video evidence, side-by-side with what they said about Iraq.
This time is different though. We're prepared, and we have the means to alert people to what FOX is doing. Everyone has seen the terrible tragedy and the awful price paid by so many Iraqis and Americans. We know this is coming, and we can stop it.
It was about this time in the lead-up to the Iraq war when the other TV networks started following FOX's lead. As CNN's Christiane Amanpour says in the video, they were intimidated by FOX into cheerleading for the Iraq war.
WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN.
This is a critical moment, and we must send a message to the major television networks urging them to ask tough questions, be skeptical, and tell us what is really happening. They must not follow FOX down the road to another war.

We've put together an open letter to the networks.
Will you sign it?
Please pssst the video and forward it to everyone you know. We must raise our voices now. This is so important, we cannot let history repeat itself.
P.S. Here are some recent articles on the Iran issue:
"Cheney pushes Bush to act on Iran" (
Guardian)
"Prelude to an attack on Iran" (Bob Baer,
Time)
Bush admin labels Iran's 125k Revolutionary Guard troops "terrorists" (
New York Times)

DON'T BE A PART OF THE PROBLEM, BE A PART OF THE FINAL SOLUTION TO RID THE AIRWAVES OF BUSH'S FOX. The Bush Administration is so dependant on keeping '? Benevolent ?' thoughts toward their administration to avoid impeachment, instill fear and pass exorbitant budgets for the military, Bush himself is appearing on Fox Sunday to upstage very other network in HOPES that he can turn the budget issue and his ratings around while saving 'his seat' proctored by Giuliani in the White House. Don't think for one minute Bush isn't running for a third term. He is. Only he is disembodied into Rudy Giuliani. And that 'gets me, too.' What makes Giulinai 'The Godfather' to September 11th. Hillary Rodham Clinton has done more in the Senate to help the people of New York City post attack than any other legislator around and where was Rudy? Where? An activist for those people? Lobbying for changes in Homeland Security so Hillary and Shumer weren't doing it alone and unilaterally? Was Rudy Giuliani actively demanding partisan stands on Homeland Security be set aside for real protections for USA cities? No. He was 'retired/reclining' with Judy plotting their next great adventure into a power position in DC. Only this time it was the White House and not a Senate seat.

Giuliani does not have a good civil rights record. If one looks at this campaign structure, there are dearly little minorities in his camp. As I have said before, Giulani personifies what is "W"rong with America rather than the solutions for America. The Black Community in general is always seen as a threat. When they protest regarding Civil Rights they are seen as trouble makers while lacking 'insight' to the 'realities' of life. When they are assaulted by police burtality it is stated, 'Well look at the neighborhoods they propagate. What do they think is going to happen?' Forever, there is always victimization of the minority communities in the USA. Odd. Democrats don't seem to have those problems.

Example:

How will the acquittal play in the Giuliani-Clinton Senate race?
"Let's move this out of politics," the mayor says. Fat chance, when his opponent's husband gets to decide whether federal civil rights laws apply.

...And the controversial decision to move the trial out of the majority black-and-Latino borough of the Bronx to upstate Albany County -- a decision that angered so many -- was an exercise in "courage" by the judicial system, Giuliani said, because "the carnival-like atmosphere" in the city meant it was "impossible for these defendants to receive a fair trial."
"This jury reaffirms our confidence in the American system of justice," he said, later adding, "Thank God for America and thank God for our court system."
The mayor concluded with an attack on people who "protest against the police and blame them for every ill in society." This verdict should prompt them to reexamine their mindset, he insisted. "Let's move this out of politics."
There's little chance of that. Diallo's family and supporters have asked that the case be revisited by the U.S. Justice Department -- the agency controlled by the husband of Giuliani's Senate opponent,
Hillary Rodham Clinton. Such a move would be inappropriate, the former federal prosecutor explained. "I know those rules like the back of my hand," he said.
But down the hallway from the mayor's press conference, just a few minutes later, several of the city's elected Democrats disagreed. Gathered in front of a statue of George Washington in the City Hall rotunda, they declared their support for a federal civil rights investigation, and their disappointment at the verdict.
C. Virginia Fields, the African-American Manhattan borough president, criticized the mayor. "It's always: 'The community must do, the community must do,'" she said. "I say to the mayor, as I've said before, 'Come into these communities. Listen. What are the people saying?'"...

When the 911 Rescue Workers fell ill, where was Rudy? When they still today struggle with health related issues, where was Rudy? Now that they have appeared in "SiCKO" in order to be heard and receive care for their failing health, where is Rudy? Need I say more? Rudy Giulani has done NOTHING for this country in the way of advocating for people. He has allowed the Republicans to play the game of all games while positioning himself for the White House. That is being a president? No. That is being a blindly ambitious war monger willing to pander to Bush cronies at any cost. He never was a man for the people and he will never be a man for the people. Ever.

Dear ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN,
"My station was intimidated by the administration and its foot soldiers at FOX News."
That is CNN's Christiane Amanpour explaining why the major television networks failed to accurately inform the public in the lead-up to the Iraq war, choosing instead to follow FOX's lead.
Now, FOX is beating the drums for war with Iran. Robert Greenwald's short film, "FOX Attacks: Iran", outlines the evidence from the station's own broadcasts, comparing their reporting before the Iraq war with what they are saying now about Iran.
You have a sacred responsibility to the American people to provide accurate and reliable information so we can best make the decisions which affect our lives. We urge you to accurately and thoroughly report all sides of this important story.
Please do not blindly follow FOX down the road to another war.
Sincerely,

Charger Day Freeway Blog
The last week has been rough in some ways. My office was closed for the week because of the wildfires ravaging San Diego County. The fires have really affected everyone, and though I was fortunate enough that no members of my immediate family were evacuated or lost their homes, I do know several people who were evacuees. I work for a large company, and I'm sure that when I get back to work on Monday, there will be some bad news regarding co-workers, I know that many people I work with live in Encinitas, or Campo, or Poway.

'I Don't Think This Place Is Worth Another Soldier's Life'
After 14 months in a Baghdad district torn by mounting sectarian violence, members of one U.S. unit are tired, bitter and skeptical.
By Joshua Partlow /
Washington Post
BAGHDAD, Oct. 26 Their line of tan Humvees and Bradley Fighting Vehicles creeps through another Baghdad afternoon. At this pace, an excruciating slowness, they strain to see everything, hoping the next manhole cover, the next rusted barrel, does not hide another bomb. A few bullets pass overhead, but they don't worry much about those.
"I hate this road," someone says over the radio.
They stop, look around. The streets of Sadiyah are deserted again. To the right, power lines slump down into the dirt. To the left, what was a soccer field is now a pasture of trash, combusting and smoking in the sun. Packs of skinny wild dogs trot past walls painted with slogans of sectarian hate.
A bomb crater blocks one lane, so they cross to the other side, where houses are blackened by fire, shops crumbled into bricks. The remains of a car bomb serve as hideous public art. Sgt. Victor Alarcon's Humvee rolls into a vast pool of knee-high brown sewage water -- the soldiers call it Lake Havasu, after the Arizona spring-break party spot -- that seeps in the doors of the vehicle and wets his boots.

Friends Come To The Aid Of 9/11 First Responder
NBC10
BARNEGAT TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A fundraiser was held Friday night to help a man who used to make a living helping others.
The Jersey Shore resident was one of the first responders to the attacks at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. But as NBC 10’s Doug Shimell explained, these days, he's in need of a helping hand himself.
"This is not about me. This is about all the 9/11 first responders and rescue workers. Those of us that are sick and dying. We just want our dignity,” Charlie Giles said.
Giles, a former N.Y. EMT, can't work due to lung problems caused by the dust and debris at ground zero. The 9/11 Victims’ Fund hasn't paid his medical bills and his Barnegat Township, N.J., home is in foreclosure. For those reasons, colleagues and local officials went to work to help Giles out. It has become a rescue mission for the rescuer.

30 Senators Say White House Must Seek Congressional Approval for Offensive Military Action against Iran

Aggressive Rhetoric Undermines Diplomacy
November 1, 2007-- Along with 29 co-signers, Senator Jim Webb of Virginia sent a letter to the White House today warning the President not to take offensive military action against Iran without the express consent of Congress. Designed to clarify any ambiguity as a result of a recent Senate amendment urging designation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, the Senators also expressed concern that the administration's increasingly provocative rhetoric has undermined diplomatic efforts with Iran.

House Passes Long Overdue Mining Reform Bill
November 1, 2007, Washington, DC
Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved comprehensive legislation to reform the antiquated Mining Act of 1872 that has governed hardrock mining on public lands for 135 years.
The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 (H.R. 2262) passed by a vote of 244 to 166.
This legislation, first introduced by the Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Nick Rahall, will put an end to the giveaway of public lands to mining companies. It requires a royalty on valuable minerals extracted from federal lands, identifies categories of federal lands that will no longer be open to hardrock mining, establishes an overall environmental standard to mitigate the degradation of the environment, limits operations permit and makes them subject to a renewal process, and mandates lands be restored to a condition that supports its uses prior to mining. Ten Reasons to Impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney
I ask Congress to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney for the following reasons:

1. Violating the United Nations Charter by launching an illegal "War of Aggression" against Iraq without cause, using fraud to sell the war to Congress and the public, misusing government funds to begin bombing without Congressional authorization, and subjecting our military personnel to unnecessary harm, debilitating injuries, and deaths.

2. Violating U.S. and international law by authorizing the torture of thousands of captives, resulting in dozens of deaths, and keeping prisoners hidden from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

3. Violating the Constitution by arbitrarily detaining Americans, legal residents, and non-Americans, without due process, without charge, and without access to counsel.

4. Violating the Geneva Conventions by targeting civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances, and using illegal weapons, including white phosphorous, depleted uranium, and a new type of napalm.

5. Violating U.S. law and the Constitution through widespread wiretapping of the phone calls and emails of Americans without a warrant.

6. Violating the Constitution by using "signing statements" to defy hundreds of laws passed by Congress.

7. Violating U.S. and state law by obstructing honest elections in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006.

8. Violating U.S. law by using paid propaganda and disinformation, selectively and misleadingly leaking classified information, and exposing the identity of a covert CIA operative working on sensitive WMD proliferation for political retribution.

9. Subverting the Constitution and abusing Presidential power by asserting a "Unitary Executive Theory" giving unlimited powers to the President, by obstructing efforts by Congress and the Courts to review and restrict Presidential actions, and by promoting and signing legislation negating the Bill of Rights and the Writ of Habeas Corpus.

10. Gross negligence in failing to assist New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina, in ignoring urgent warnings of an Al Qaeda attack prior to Sept. 11, 2001, and in increasing air pollution causing global warming.
