In an overwhelming show of support for consolidation, the Holmes-Washington Credit Union membership in Bonifay, Florida last night approved a merger with Community South Credit Union in Chipley. The information was received in a news release from The Goulding Agency.

Held at the Holmes County Ag Center in Bonifay, the membership vote drew a modest but vocal crowd of credit union members, and the spirit of the meeting was one of cooperative growth.

General Motors Corp, staying afloat with $13.4 billion in federal rescue loans, announced early today that it is cutting its worldwide salaried workforce by 10,000, or 14%, this year and temporarily reducing the pay for a majority of its U.S. white-collar workforce....

This is NOT improvement. Throwing paper at crashing markets is NOT a good idea. $700 billion in MISTAKES.

NO MORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As soon as President Obama put limits on CEO salaries, there were major 'players' in this that decided they DID NOT need a bailout.

Now this outrage. Bailing out banks is NOT the American way. We have a stimulus package that will revitalize the economy. Bailouts to major corporate structures is a REPUBLICAN game plan, not an American strategy.

I never wanted Geither there and I don't trust him. I can completely understand why his 'dissertation' was cancelled until the President made rounds for the stimulus plan.

NO MORE BAILOUTS.

End of discussion.

The question of Afghanistan. Is it a war we can win? I believe it is. The people of that nation united with us many years ago.

More than 1,000 foreign soldiers are stationed at the US airbase in Manas, Kyrgyzstan

Kazakhstan helps out US on Afghanistan (click here)
ASTANA (AFP) — Kazakhstan on Monday became the latest nation to offer its territory for the transit of supplies to coalition troops in Afghanistan, following Kyrgyzstan's shock decision to shut a key US airbase.
"Kazakhstan has given its consent to the transit of cargo by land for the logistical material for the US contingent in Afghanistan," Kazakh foreign ministry spokesman Yerzhan Ashikbayev told reporters.
"We will work out the technical and commercial parameters with the US side separately," Ashikbayev said.
"We are only talking about non-military materials," he emphasized.
The announcement from Kazakhstan comes days after Kyrgyzstan's government ordered the closure of a US airbase that serves as a vital supply route for US and NATO troops in Afghanistan.
The administration of US President Barack Obama has made Afghanistan a top priority and has pressed hard to secure overland transit agreements from Russia and Central Asian nations amid security problems on the Pakistan route....

Still President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai seeks to include peaceful citizens of all ethnicities to join in rejoicing at the return of their nation. (click title to entry - thank you)

THAT, is his place. President Karzai should be vigilant for any of the citizens of a war torn nation, still uncertain about its future.

There is no doubt that a struggle for the defeat of al Qaeda will be a burden to everyone, including the Afghan citizens and those in the USA that have sacrificed so much for a "W"rongful war in Iraq that should have never occurred.

But, defeat al Qaeda we must, there is too much at stake. Hasn't anyone, besides me, asked themselves what the world would be like today if the Bush/Cheney administration didn't displace the priorities of defeating al Qaeda? If Osama bin Laden were in prison or dead? Haven't you asked yourselves that? Has everyone been so involved in defeating Bush/Cheney and reclaiming the USA that all lost sight of a world safe from terrorists?

The USA has been used and abused by Power Brokers and Greed Merchants. We need to regain our priorities for National Security and I dare say is it too much to ask to return to the war that should have been fought in the first place? In all sincerity, I doubt the struggle for Afghanistan will be that overwhelming once NATO is better balanced with the increased placement of troops by the USA. NATO has been struggling with the current troop deployment, it is time to reclaim our rightful place to our own security.

Russia has returned as our integral partner. We again align with a country that helped defeat Hitler. Can bin Laden be more of a foe? I don't think so.

...Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (click here) announced Friday that Moscow and Washington had reached an agreement on reinstating transit routes through Russia of U.S. nonmilitary freight intended for Afghanistan. The transit agreement between Russia and NATO was actually signed last April, and Moscow never closed this corridor. It was NATO that temporarily froze relations with Moscow after the Russia-Georgia conflict in August. In any event, the reinstatement of U.S. and NATO nonmilitary shipments through Russia is one of the most positive developments in U.S.-Russian relations that we have seen in years....

The Nay Sayers can lurk about, but, the USA has been absent from this fight and if one recalls the 'waltz' into Kabul many years ago was far more easy than we ever anticipated.

I believe the USA military overstates its case. The real challenge is Pakistan and stabilizing the borders with Afghanistan, Kashmir and India. I hold far more optimism than our military leaders do.

If one recalls Afghanistan in 2001, it fell like a house of cards. Can the capture and justice FROM bin Laden be that far away? It is Pakistan and its anarchic intelligence / military complex that offers so much chaos to the issue. It is Pakistan that needs to come to terms with its own citizens and the hostility that lies within its borders POST Musharraf.

Poll: US, allies, Kabul government losing ground (click here)
By BARRY SCHWEID – 4 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — Support for the Kabul government and the United States and European troops trying to bolster it against insurgents is plummeting among the Afghan people, a new poll reports.
The decline is striking particularly in the last year, the poll shows, even as the Obama administration and NATO allies weigh moves to strengthen forces in the struggle with Taliban and other radical groups.
President Barack Obama has assigned high priority to the conflict and the administration is weighing whether to send another 30,000 U.S. troops there, almost doubling the 32,000 present....

Oversight? What kind of joke is this?

GAO Oversight Office at NSA Lies Dormant (click here)
...Intelligence spending has doubled in the last ten years....intelligence oversight capacity has not grown at the same rate....

At least we are getting oversight. Under Bush/Cheney were was no oversight and not only that there were NO BID contracts.

The monies already have a stipulated purpose and I don't see why there would such quick absorption that a 10% gap of accountability would occur. If there is then the monies have to be traced and an accounting made.

The travesty of such an observation is that what did anyone do to stop the exorbitant spending of the Republicans and their lack of accountability? What did anyone do to stop NO BID contracts? What did anyone do to stop a $350 billion 'BAILOUT' program from disappearing without a trace?

The worst of it is that there is absolutely no accountability for the eight years of war spending that went into the Dark Hole of Iraq.

There will be better accountability for the monies spent in this stimulus program than any spending by Congress in the last eight years. That alone is more refreshing then any percentage that will be difficult to track over time.

...The Obama administration's economic stimulus plan could end up wasting billions of dollars by attempting to spend money faster than an overburdened government acquisition system can manage and oversee it, according to documents and interviews with contracting specialists.
The $827 billion stimulus legislation under debate in Congress includes provisions aimed at ensuring oversight of the massive infusion of contracts, state grants and other measures. At the urging of the administration, those provisions call for transparency, bid competition, and new auditing resources and oversight boards....

If it's not floods, it's fire in Australia.

I believe there needs to be vast evacuation of the entire area that could be affected by the wildfires (bush fires). Listening to a live commentary this morning I am convinced the region is under the influence of enormous heat that is 'consistent' due to the 'heat transfer system' that lingers over Victoria.

The heat over Victoria is so sustained that any 'rain' clouds never actually rain while lightning strikes the area and produces fire in this drought stricken region. All people that could remotely be disaffected need to be evacuated. The 'heat transfer system' clouds are NOT rain clouds. They exist to transfer heat from the equator to Antarctica where the heat is then absorbed by the ice that is subsequently sublimed.

The point is that any rain clouds that 'might' occur will never produce enough rain to reach the ground and except for what humans can do to extinguish these fires they will not let up. Evacuation of any life from the region is paramount to their well being.

I am not surprised at these dynamics. The surface of the planet is too hot to allow anything but evaporation should rain be predicted.

Queen's shock at bush fire deaths (click here)
The Queen has expressed her "shock and sadness" at the death toll in the Australian bush fires.
At least 108 people have died in the fires in southern Australia, the worst in the country's history.
She also expressed her admiration for the work of the emergency services to contain the situation.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has telephoned his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd to offer sympathy and assistance dealing with the bush fires.
In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace the Queen said: "I was shocked and saddened to learn of the terrible toll being exacted by the fires this weekend.
"I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of all those who have died and my deep sympathy to the many who have lost their homes in this disaster on so dreadful an occasion as this for Australia....

This is the current climate image of Australia and one will notice the chronic 'heat transfer' system that crosses Australia at Victoria. Noted at the northern end of that heat transfer is a severe storm, Tropical Storm Freddy.

BRISBANE - Sodden residents of northeastern Australia were trying to clean up from weeks of rain, even as forecasters said two offshore storms could turn into cyclones by tomorrow.
River levels were beginning to fall in some parts of Queensland while emergency workers continued to evacuate people left stranded.
A 42-year-old man was rescued after clinging to a tree near a swollen creek for more than three hours. He was treated for minor injuries.
Ingham, the hardest-hit town, has been underwater since a weekend storm, but water levels were beginning to drop....

Queensland is northeast and has been hit hard with chronic rains and flooding. Victoria, where the fires currently are blazing is at the direct opposite of the continent, in the southern region. South of Victoria are the Bass Strait and the Island of Tasmania, then on into Antarctica.

Australian floods wash crocodiles into streets (click here)

SYDNEY (AFP) — Floods ravaging northern Australia have washed crocodiles onto the streets, where one was hit by a car, authorities said in a warning to residents Wednesday.
More than 60 percent of the vast northeastern state of Queensland has been declared a disaster area, and flooding after two recent cyclones has affected almost 3,000 homes, they said.
The army has been called in to help with rescue and recovery efforts, while three reports of large crocodiles washed up from flooded rivers have come in from homes in the Gulf of Carpentaria region.
"I'm not sure if it's the same crocodile moving around -- on the three sides of Normanton there's been a large croc seen right up close to the water's edge," said mayor Joyce Zahner.
"Hopefully he'll stay in the water and the kids will stay on the land," Zahner told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation....

FOURTEEN people are confirmed dead but as many as 40 are feared to have died as bushfires swept across Victoria yesterday and continued to burn through the night.
Police, who last night could only begin going into the blackened ruins of towns and communities, said six people were killed in a single vehicle in Kinglake.
But they acknowledged they had little idea of how many could be buried inside their ruined homes, or burned as they tried to escape, and that the death toll could go much higher.
Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said official predictions that 40 people had lost their lives was only an estimate.....

There is international acclaim for the Biden speech in Germany. Russia shows signs of relief to inclusion.

There is no doubt that Iran poses a serious threat to Europe and the Middle East. Now, with its ability to launch missiles into space there is no doubt ICBMs are on the Iranian agenda. To that end there needs to be defense systems that will END the incentive for nuclear proliferation.

According to RIA Novosti, Russia is pleased the future plans of such defense systems will not be offensive to Russian borders through inclusion in talks leading to Non-Proliferation and peace.

The world Post-Bush/Cheney is a very different place.

NATO chief: more European troops in Afghanistan (click title to entry - thank you)
By DAVID RISING and GEORGE JAHN – 6 hours ago
MUNICH (AP) — NATO's secretary-general on Saturday blasted Europe's reluctance to respond to American calls for more troops in Afghanistan, saying countries like Germany and France need to "share the heavy lifting."
Germany's chancellor endorsed the principle of greater military support for the U.S. in NATO operations but did not commit to additional deployment in Afghanistan. France's president did not mention the issue at all during at a meeting of world leaders at the Munich Security Conference
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, a staunch supporter of U.S. calls for more European troops in Afghanistan, referred to a joint call this week from German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicholas Sarkozy to strengthen Europe's role in NATO. He said it was a good idea but would not come without cost.
"I'm frankly concerned when I hear the United States is planning a major commitment for Afghanistan but other allies are already ruling out doing more," he told a gathering of world leaders and top ministers at the Munich Security Conference. "That is not good for the political balance ... and it also makes the calls for Europe's' voice to be heard in Washington perhaps a bit more hollow than they should be."...

Russia must be part of European security structures - Merkel (click here)

07/ 02/ 2009
MUNICH, February 7 (RIA Novosti) - Russia must be included in European security structures, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday at the 45th Munich Conference on Security Policy
Merkel said it was in the general interest to involve Russia in Europe's future security structures, adding that attention should be paid to the initiative of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on discussing a new security set up for the continent.
Relations with Russia play a key role in European security as Russia is a part of Europe, Merkel said.
She added that the new NATO security approach should be all-encompassing.

Russia has already recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independant states. Considering all the evidence of the violations of Georgia in regard to human rights abuses there really is no debate. The protections Russia is providing in these areas are for reasons of their own defense. It is reasonable and prudent. NATO is still talking around the reality of those human rights abuses and needs to address this new security reality for those reasons straight on without delay.

MUNICH, February 7 (RIA Novosti) - Strengthening Russia's ties with the West is vital and the NATO-Russia Council can play an important role, the military alliance's secretary general said on Saturday.
Speaking at the 45th Munich Conference on Security Policy, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer identified two partnerships that need fundamentally strengthening - the second being between Europe and the United States.
He said that the NATO-Russia Council had great potential but warned there was a long way to go, expressing doubts about Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's proposals for a new European security structure in the wake of Russia's recognition of and cooperation with the separatist Georgian republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia....

The 'revisit' is the best venue for hopes to stop the proliferation of Iran. If Russia can bring enough clout to the Iranian idea of national defense, they could disarm from any nuclear potential. Russia is a key player in eliminating any missile defense for Europe and the Middle East if it is effective with Iran. Russia also has a responsibility in realizing its own citizens now face unpredictable dangers from Iran and might consider asking the USA for protections from any Iranian potential as well.

Basically, THE LANGUAGE of peace hasn't entered the international dialogue yet. To date, all the nations that dealt with Bush/Cheney were focusing on 'containment' of the Iraq invasion and its anticipated outcome in the best interest of the people of Iraq. Bush/Cheney never engaged 'peace' as a directive, nor the possibility of being benevolent partners with Russia.

Barak Obama has a huge opportunity before him in that by introducing 'the language' of peace through productive negotiations that include the national security of all nations, even in the face of Iranian hatred, he can stop nuclear proliferation and the economic 'sapping' of military weaponary demands by so many countries where spending priorities should turn to peaceful economic infrastructure such as education and health care.

I remind the nations bordering the Gulf of Mexico are just as much partners in this peace as are countries at distance such as Iran and North Korea.

U.S. to develop missile shield in Europe, consult Russia - Biden (click here)
17:33
07/ 02/ 2009
MUNICH, February 7 (RIA Novosti) - The United States will continue to work on a planned missile defense system in Central Europe, but it will consult Russia, Vice President Joe Biden said on Saturday.
"We will continue to develop missile defenses to counter a growing Iranian capability, provided the technology is proven to work and cost effective," Biden said at the 45th Munich Security Conference, adding: "We will do so in consultation with our NATO allies and Russia."
Russia has consistently opposed the missile shield as a threat to its national security and officials have repeatedly expressed the hope that President Barack Obama would not follow through with his predecessor's missile defense plans.
Washington has agreed with Warsaw and Prague plans to deploy 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic by 2013. The United States says the defenses are needed to deter possible strikes from "rogue states" such as Iran.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said at the conference on Friday that the shield is aimed at Russia's nuclear deterrent, but added that Moscow would not follow through with its threat to deploy Iskander missile systems in the Kaliningrad Region if the United States gave up its missile shield plans.
Biden's message to Russia was mixed, suggesting more effort at engagement but giving little sign of movement on the core issues, such as the missile shield and NATO expansion.
"It is time to press the reset button and to revisit the many areas where we can and should work together," he said, identifying Afghanistan as an area for greater cooperation between NATO and Russia....

Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court spoke last year at award ceremonies for the Gruber Justice Prize at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. At present, she is the court's only woman justice. (Jose Luis Magana/Associated press/file)

This is a tough call. Pancreatic cancer is a devastating disease. She joins people such as Michael Landon and Patrick Swayze in a fight for life. The uptick for Justice Ginsburg is that it was caught early.

It isn't as though Pancreatic Cancer has won every fight that it embarked on, there have been hugely wonderful success stories in the past, when people underwent a surgery called a Whipple Procedure. The surgery is nearly as dangerous as the cancer, but, when a person recovers from it they have the promise of life afterwards.

Justice Ginsbury has probably beaten the odds and I sincerely hope so. She'll be back in good order soon to the court and her much needed concise decision making.

Left-leaning Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg had surgery today for
pancreatic cancer — which is nasty stuff.
Ginberg’s was caught early in a cancer screening — she’s already a survivor of colon cancer — which is rare for a cancer that often goes undetected into its advanced stages. The AP is reporting Ginsberg’s 1-cm diameter tumor was removed surgically, the most hopeful course of treatment.
Even so, the 5 year survival rate is only about
15 percent.

C.I.A. Expanding Terror Battle Under Guise of Charter Flights (click here)
...When the Central Intelligence Agency wants to grab a suspected member of Al Qaeda overseas and deliver him to interrogators in another country, an Aero Contractors plane often does the job. If agency experts need to fly overseas in a hurry after the capture of a prized prisoner, a plane will depart Johnston County and stop at Dulles Airport outside Washington to pick up the C.I.A. team on the way.

Aero Contractors' planes dropped C.I.A. paramilitary officers into Afghanistan in 2001; carried an American team to Karachi, Pakistan, right after the United States Consulate there was bombed in 2002; and flew from Libya to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, the day before an American-held prisoner said he was questioned by Libyan intelligence agents last year, according to flight data and other records.

While posing as a private charter outfit - "aircraft rental with pilot" is the listing in Dun and Bradstreet - Aero Contractors is in fact a major domestic hub of the Central Intelligence Agency's secret air service. The company was founded in 1979 by a legendary C.I.A. officer and chief pilot for Air America, the agency's Vietnam-era air company, and it appears to be controlled by the agency, according to former employees....

While Bush/Cheney were in the Executive Branch manipulating 'the propaganda' regarding torture and extraordinary rendition, the USA's European Allies were in a very precarious position.

To begin, The Brits have been our allies for decades in a way that no other ally has. We share much with Britian, including culture, but also a heritage. So, when the USA breaths 'fire' after being attacked by terrorists, the Brits are at our side through thick and thin. I remember the 'tone' of the words of Tony Blair when Bush was inaugurated in that he welcomed a fellow Christian to office.

There is a 'proprietary' relationship between world powers. Between allies. We are sovereign nations, but, we are also 'invested' in many venues to each other and in that 'state of affairs' lies clout and also responsibility. For as allies, if one goes down there is a darn good chance the rest will follow.

Bush liked to call it 'political capital' when in fact that is a frivilous term for POWER. Bush and Cheney were power brokers and they didn't care whom they implicated in their 'dirty dealings' they simply carried out their agenda and didn't care if that endangered the people of Great Britain.

So, in that 'crude' explanation lies the understanding that when it comes to 'tattling' on the USA in a meaningful way by Jack Straw, there were a lot of conflicting priorities.

During the years Bush/Cheney were 'playing God' with human lives in the name of national security; and carrying out illegal and immoral measures such as Extraordinary Rendition; the 'allies' were always 'dodging public relation bullets' if you will. I am confident at some point in contemplation both Blair and Straw would reflect on the ruthlessness and complete stupidity of the Bush Executive Branch and question as to whether 'if pushed to hard or to far' it would actually come to destroy the very allies that facilitated NATO.

That speculation aside as only Straw and Blair could answer same. And maybe they should, in a book someday. In a book of memoirs, perhaps. A set of books that actually tells the tale of the extent allies are bound and the detriment of same.

The works of Jack Straw below reflects the 'reality' of the USA's involvement of Extraordinary Renditionand the FACT it was sanctioned through the CIA. I do believe some of these aircraft flew out of North Carolina on a regular basis.

...The vice chairman (click title to entry - thank you) of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Christopher S. Bond , R-Mo., pressed Panetta on remarks he made on the first day of his confirmation hearing Thursday, with Bond saying “it’s news to me” that the Bush administration did so. Q107 Mr Keetch: They are not flying under US military flags; these are Gulfstream aircraft used by the CIA. They have a 26-strong fleet of Gulfstream aircraft that are used for this purpose. These aircraft are not coming into British spaces; they are coming into airports. Some are into bases like Northolt, and some into bases like Prestwick. Whilst it is always good to have the head of your parliamentary staff respond to our Clerk, Mr Priestley, could you give us an assurance that you will investigate these specific flights; and, if it is the case that these flights are being used for the process of extraordinary rendition, which is contrary to international law and indeed contrary to the stated policy of Her Majesty's Government, would you attempt to see if they should stop?...

For A Second Year, Bees Are Dying Off And America's Farmers Are Getting Stung
MODESTO, Calif., March 7, 2008

(CBS) In California the almond orchards are in blossom and millions of honeybees are at work, pollinating, doing a job only they can do.
Almonds are the first big bloom of the season and the first big test of honeybee health, CBS News correspondent John Blackstone reports.
"It's not a vibrant hive, it's not full of bees," said Brett Adee. "A hive this time of year should be just busting bees. And it's just a scrawny little bee hive."
Adee, whose family runs the largest beekeeping operation in the country, says bees are dying at least as fast as they did last year.
"It's off the chart this year. It's not a sustainable thing, what's happening now," he said.
What's happening in the almond orchards doesn't bode well for crops everywhere that require pollination....

There seems to be a FEW issues surrounding aid to Gaza, the least is an Iranian ship. I don't blame Israel for being prudent !

Humanitarian efforts that 'villanize' Israel will not be successful. The aid that is best to reach Hamas is that directed by Fatah. It would be best if all aid groups, NGOs, were to find 'SAFE' entry to Gaza through efforts organized through the governments involved. Possibly Egypt needs to provide a venue of UN Peacekeepers to inspect the aid anticipated by the people of Gaza.

Hamas steals blankets, food from U.N. warehouse
JERUSALEM — Armed Hamas police broke into a Gaza warehouse packed with U.N. humanitarian supplies and seized thousands of blankets and food packages, officials said Wednesday.
It was a rare public clash between the international agency that feeds much of the territory and the militant group that rules it. And the incident highlighted difficulties facing donors seeking to bypass Hamas while helping Gazans survive and rebuild after Israel’s punishing military operation.
Hamas policemen stormed an aid warehouse in Gaza City Tuesday evening and confiscated 3,500 blankets and over 400 food parcels ready for distribution to 500 families, said United Nations Relief and Works Agency spokesman Christopher Gunness.

RAFAH, Egypt (AP) — More than two dozen trucks loaded with food, aid and goods intended for the Gaza Strip were stranded on the Egyptian side of the border Thursday, leaving truckers with little to do but sip tea and exude frustration.
The backlog raises questions about a U.N. appeal announced Thursday which calls for $613 million to help Palestinians recover from Israel's three-week offensive in Gaza and whether new aid will have much effect until there is a deal to open the devastated territory's borders.
"The ordinary people here in Gaza are not getting enough help and are not getting it quickly enough," said John Ging, the top U.N. official in Gaza.
He blamed the aid shortage on the lack of access to Gaza and demanded that the border crossings be opened.
"There are thousands of tons of assistance generously donated, sitting in Egypt, Jordan and also in the ports in Israel," said Ging. "That aid should be right here, right now, helping the people who need it."...

Israeli military says a few dozen kilograms of supplies were on board the ship

Israel is denying allegations that it fired at a Lebanese ship carrying activists and supplies into Gaza after seizing it on Thursday.
Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said Thursday the ship was seized by the navy and escorted into the port city of Ashdod.
Journalists from Arab television stations Al-Jadeed and Al-Jazeera aboard the ship reported that the navy fired shots at the vessel. They alleged that after boarding the ship, the Israelis assaulted its occupants.
Other journalists on the ship said they could not provide any pictures of the incident because the Israelis smashed their equipment.
"They are pointing guns against us — they are kicking us and beating us. They are threatening our lives," Al-Jazeera journalist Salam Khoder reported on the broadcaster's website.
An Israeli army spokesman said warning shots were fired in the air when the ship tried to sail toward the Gaza Strip, said Reuters.
"No gunshots were fired on board during the boarding and capture of the cargo boat," the military said in a statement.
All of the ship's 20 passengers will be taken by land to Lebanon after they are questioned by Israeli officials, said Reuters....

Cairo has officially refused to give an Iranian relief ship permission to unload Gaza-bound humanitarian aid at an Egyptian seaport. After weeks of stalling the Iranian aid ship Shahed some 25 km (15 miles) off the coast of Gaza, the Egyptian government expressed opposition to the emergency delivery through the Al-Areesh port, an informed source said Wednesday. The move dealt a blow to efforts by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) aimed at channeling desperately-needed aid to Gazans, added the source who requested anonymity....

Cairo intercepts Iranian arms ship (click here)
Israel is closely tracking an Iranian freighter believed to be carrying weaponry for Hamas that is currently docked in the Red Sea outside the Suez Canal, after Egypt refused to permit it to cross the waterway to the Mediterranean.
According to a report received at the Defense Ministry from the Pentagon, the US Navy recently boarded an Iranian vessel that was carrying artillery shells and other weaponry.
"This is a big test for the Egyptians," a senior defense official said. "So far the Egyptians have prevented the ship from crossing the Suez and we hope it will stay that way."
Defense officials said that Iran is trying to supply Hamas with new Grad-model Katyusha rockets and to replace high-grade explosives that were exhausted or destroyed by the IDF during Operation Cast Lead....

Cyprus Silent Over Ship's Suspected Hamas Weapons Cargo (click here)

AMMAN -- Mystery continues to surround a Cyprus-flagged ship detained at the island's southern Limassol port under Israeli and U.S. suspicion it may be carrying Iranian weapons for the Palestinian Hamas movement in Gaza, underlying the difficulties in stemming arms smuggling to Palestinian groups fighting Israel.
Cyprus acknowledged it had detained a Russian-owned ship last Friday, but has refused to reveal any information to the press regarding reports that it was carrying weapons, insisting that the vessel and its cargo are still under investigation....

The ship was released yesterday when it became apparent that there was no legal basis for holding it....

Mullen: Iranian arms probably were bound for Gaza (click here)
By ANNE GEARAN – Jan 27, 2009
WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation's top military officer said Tuesday the United States did all it could to intercept a suspected arms shipment to Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, but its hands were tied.
Separately, Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other U.S. officials said it is too soon to tell whether the prospect of new U.S. engagement with Iran will bear fruit.
Mullen confirmed that a Cypriot-flagged ship intercepted in the Red Sea last week was carrying Iranian arms and that U.S. authorities suspect that the shipment was ultimately bound for the Gaza Strip, where Hamas and Israel are observing a shaky truce after three weeks of fighting....

Egypt Hammers Hizbullah, Hamas, Qatar (click here)
Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Wednesday accused Hizbullah and Hamas of trying to "hurl the region into collisions and conflicts to serve Iran's interests."
Abul Gheit also said in a television interview Iran tries to "use its cards to ease the western pressures over its nuclear program."
Egypt, he said, has thwarted Qatar's attempts to sponsor an official Arab Summit Conference at Doha earlier this month.
"Had that summit been convened it would have harmed joint Arab action," he added.
"Some people thought that a television network would be able to topple the state of Egypt … Egypt is a major power and cannot be affected by al-Jazeera or other networks," Abul Gheit stressed.
He criticized Hamas for the coup it carried out against the Palestine National Authority in June 2007.

The Problem globally is that everyone is waiting for 'the market adjustment' to become temporary. It won't be temporary.

From the years 2000-2007 the 'hubris' of the Bush USA Treasury 'hyper-inflated' the markets. There were all kinds of changes and so called 'perks' such as the extention of the NY Stock Exchange into Europe.

That 'hubris' is all it was and what is happening is a 'deflation' of a balloon that was 'more than just a housing bubble.' The 'adjustment' the USA and global markets are 'feeling' isn't simply a transition through a 'bad time' to return to 'good times.'

What occurred during seven years of Republican spending in the USA while they expanded the debt and annually raised the USA debt ceiling was an artifical economy based in unnecessary construction through priorities that supported a political agenda void of benevolence toward global economic stability.

The Bush Years will be measured in GOVERNMENT WASTE including the time it has taken to defeat al Qaeda.

That 'waste' was never viewed by global partners as such, but, as a ? perhaps ? new way of market strategy. It wasn't a market strategy at all, it was pure unadulterated politics. It was GROSS mismanagement by the Executive Branch of the USA Government at every turn regardless to topic. Power brokers. The Bush Years are laced with power brokers, not, good government.

If one wanted to 'analyze' the years going forward from the time Former President Clinton took office there would be a far different outcome and far more stability had Bush/Cheney not conned the Executive Branch away from Former Vice President Gore.

This 'market CRASH' (and when the Stock Exchange fell 50% in one year, that my friends, is a crash, not a recession.) occurred due to "W"rongful spending, "W"rongful priorities and I apologize for the fear that gripped this country for so long that 'enabled' such tragic outcomes to global stability.

Americans have decidedly taken their country back and what that means to the global markets and growing number of USA allies, is that the USA has a lot of work to do, including being vigilant to prevent another September 11th.

I would hope every nation that has stood by in strength and compassion during this decade will come to understand the vast responsibility the USA has toward all of them and doling out funds 'willy-nilly' when those funds are desperately needed to return stability to the USA while we change our 'polluting' ways is irresponsible. It is irresponsible to our own citizens and to global citizens.

It is not protectionism. It is inclusion. It is all in the 'eye of the beholder' and there is no room for greed anywhere. Different from a Republican administration and Congress, every USA penny needs to be conserved and distributed prudently. For every 'return' on investment by American citizens that literally used their own paychecks to elect our new President, there will be vast more return to the global stability and market places.

The arguement that 'international competition' will bring 'the best value' to the USA for its economic stimulus is INVALID. We, as Americans can determine what a 'fair paycheck' looks like and how that impacts the 'cost' of rebuilding our infrastructure. With proper 'bidding' from American companies for government contracts their won't be any need for international competition to insure 'fair prices' for 'raw materials.'

I do not anticipate 'free wheeling' market competition as there was with Bush. Bush's 'Rule of Law' was a joke and he simply removed all laws and regulations that insured fair and honest market practices. There won't be any more 'fraud' to cause global instability. The 'one' place terrorist networks seek to 'hurt' nations and societies is 'within' their market strategies. We as a world intent on peace and benevolence can't allow that to happen and we need to have 'regulatory' infrastructure that promotes prosperity even in the face of possible tragedy.

What occurred under Bush and Paulson was complete exploitation of markets while ignoring the dangers of economic collapse and how that opens up the possibility of terrorist infiltration. As an example the 'mess' that is Pakistan and its lack of a cohesive market strategy is all too clear.

While a 'strong USA' seems a little scary to a world still traumatized by the last eight years, there is nothing to say 'a USA gaining strength enough' to be a 'strong partner' isn't in the best interest of the global community.

NOW, is the time for nations to take inventory of the 'best strategy' to consent to in all venues, including the extreme and present dangers of a warming planet.

NOW, is the time to 'summit' and create 'that world' of perfect balance.

NOW, is when the USA's people have offered up their favorite son ready to make agreements and sign treaties. Let us not waste what the citizens of the USA have started.

China shows recovery signs, US job loss slows
(Agencies)Updated: 2009-02-05 08:11

BEIJING/LONDON -- Improved manufacturing data from China on Wednesday suggested its downturn may be bottoming out and US employment figures were not quite as bad as forecast, but crisis-hit Russia's sovereign debt rating was cut.
US data showed another steep drop in private sector employment but the rate of job losses slowed in January for the first time since September last year. ADP Employer Services said private employers cut 522,000 jobs in January -- slightly fewer than forecast -- after a revised 659,000 jobs were lost in December.
This marked the first slowdown for four months but analysts were cautious before wider US payrolls data on Friday. "I wouldn't put too much meaning into this report. Overall, aside from the the job losses, consumption all over the world is down. That's troubling," said Win Thin, senior currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York...

Russia to control Eurasec anti-crisis fund - Medvedev

$10 billion. If President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin can convince their allies, including Iran, to stop nuclear proliferation, the USA should entertain the 'idea' of economic enhancements between what will then be a strong alliance for PEACE.

I would imagine that such a Peace Directive would also help bring about the nuclear disarmament of Pakistan and India as well.

Russia, Allies Offer to Assist U.S. in Afghanistan (Update2) (click here)
By Lucian Kim and Ken Fireman
Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Russia and four former Soviet republics offered to help the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan even as one, Kyrgyzstan, moved forward on a decision to cut off American access to an air base used for war supplies.
Russian President
Dmitry Medvedev said the five countries, including the Central Asian nations of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, are ready for “full-fledged and comprehensive cooperation” with NATO forces in the region. He spoke on state broadcaster Vesti-24 today.
At the same time, Kyrgyz Security Council Secretary Adukhan Madumarov said on the same channel that the U.S. air base at the Manas airport near Bishkek must cease operations within 180 days. The base would be crucial to President
Barack Obama’s plans for a buildup of troops to defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The Kyrgyz Parliament will likely vote Feb. 6 on legislation formally renouncing the agreement allowing U.S. operations at the base, the Interfax news agency reported from Bishkek....

Russian arms exports to China may drop significantly (click here)

04/ 02/ 2009
MOSCOW, February 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russian arms sales to China could shrink from 40% to 10%, the head of a state-controlled arms exporter said on Wednesday.
In the past several decades Russia has been selling Su-27 and Su-30 fighters, Varshavyanka-class diesel submarines, and air-defense systems to China, among other types of weapons and equipment.
Rosoboronexport's general director Anatoly Isaikin did not say exactly when the Chinese share was expected to drop, stressing, however, that Russia was unfazed by the prospect.
"After all, sales volumes [across the world] are still high," he said in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
He said Russia's cooperation with Beijing "is reaching a fundamentally new level - the development of dual-purpose products with high-tech components."
Isaikin said Russia had signed the first military contract this year for the delivery of more than 100 engines for the Chinese J-10 fighter.
He added that China would continue to buy military transport aircraft, fuel tankers, and aircraft engines from Russia, and was also interested in air-defense system and naval systems.

Russian aid to Kyrgyzstan not linked to U.S. airbase closure (click here)

MOSCOW, February 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russian financial assistance to Kyrgyzstan is not linked to the Central Asian country's decision to close a U.S. military base, a deputy Russian foreign minister said Wednesday.
(Video)
"We do not think these two events are connected," Grigory Karasin told journalists, adding that the decision to close the Manas base had been made independently by the Kyrgyz government.
"Russia and Kyrgyzstan are very close countries cooperating in many spheres. We were able to provide aid which could possibly help Kyrgyzstan get through a critical economic and social phase," he said, adding that the loan was the result of "many months of work by our ministries."
Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said in Moscow on Tuesday he would demand the closure of the airbase, used to support antiterrorism operations in neighboring Afghanistan, citing Washington's refusal to discuss higher rental payments and its reluctance to address the 2006 killing by a U.S. serviceman of a local....

MOSCOW, February 4 (RIA Novosti) - The collective rapid-reaction force to be created by a post-Soviet regional security bloc will be just as good as comparable NATO forces, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday.
The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) agreed on Wednesday at a summit in Moscow to set up the new force, to be based in Russia.
Medvedev said the force, to be comprised of a "sufficient" number of units, would be "well trained and well equipped."
"Russia is ready to contribute a division and a brigade," he said. "This gives you an idea of the scale."
The Russian president also said the CSTO was open for cooperation with the United States in the fight against terrorism in Central Asia....

Gitmo hearing still on docket, despite Obama order

...Susan Crawford, a Bush appointee who oversees the tribunal system, has not withdrawn charges against Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the alleged mastermind of the USS Cole bombing, and Monday's hearing remains on the schedule, the Pentagon confirmed Wednesday....

The former administration of the USA won't be brought to trial by the Obama Administration. An action like that would have to include Congress as well. But, the 'real' trials for such an action would come through the international courts and I am confident there are those, including Americans, that are seeking the venue for justice in what is the longest reign of an oppressive government in the USA.

The Obama White House is going to have to insist on Gates 'getting tough' with Gitmo. Some bad habits are hard to break. I really don't see why an Executive Order was ignored. It looks like treason to me. It isn't as though President Obama opened the gates of Gitmo and turned them loose on the country again.

Want ex-leader accountable on Iraq war

...Though the new president probably didn't notice them, the protesters holding the "ARREST BUSH" placards illustrated a thorny problem he will have to confront, perhaps sooner rather than later.
While most viewed Obama's inauguration as a fresh start for the country, many on the political left - among some of Obama's most ardent supporters - want to hold George W. Bush accountable for what they believe were illegal activities in office, including misleading Congress on the Iraq war, spying on Americans, and permitting coercive interrogations that critics consider to have been torture....

Every year Saudi Arabia comes out with a list of 'The Most Wanted Terrorists.' The list in past years had usually about 30 people. The Saudis are also very successful in capturing all those listed on "The Most Wanted Terrorist" List as well.

This year there are 11 former Gitmo detainees that have reappeared as problems for Saudi Arabia.

By PAUL SCHEMM – 11 hours ago
CAIRO (AP) — The Saudi government acknowledged Wednesday that 11 men on the country's most wanted list are former Guantanamo prisoners who went through rehabilitation, raising doubts about a program intended to counter extremist religious ideology.
President Barack Obama signed an executive order closing down the prison in Cuba on Jan. 22 — his second day in office — leaving nations scrambling over what to do with a potential flood of released detainees.
Some 133 of Guantanamo's over 700 inmates were Saudi, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Gen. Mansour al-Turki, and 117 have returned to Saudi Arabia and been through rehabilitation programs.
"Besides the 11 people (on the list) who came from Guantanamo, there are still 106 people who have gone through this rehabilitation program and are doing okay," he told The Associated Press.
With a majority of the 9/11 hijackers from Saudi Arabia and hundreds of youths streaming into Iraq to join the insurgents, there has been a concerted government effort to counter with deprogramming sessions involving clerics, psychologists and sociologists....

Deviants disappearing from Kingdom: Experts (click here)

Arab News
MAKKAH: Terror experts in the Kingdom are claiming that terror-suspects have fled Saudi Arabia as they no longer find it congenial for the growth of extremist ideologies.
“The deviant ideology is disappearing from the country and its advocates have no choice but to leave the country as indicated by the details recently published by the Ministry of Interior,” Maj. Gen. Yahya Al-Zayedi, a Saudi security expert, told Al-Madinah newspaper.
“Security operations in the Kingdom have proved to be a total success in checking the spread of extremist activities and driving them out of their hiding places.
The operations have also foiled their conspiracies against the country, society and religion, and unveiled the falseness of their claims. This is the circumstance under which militants figuring in the list ran away from the Kingdom,” Al-Zayedi said....

Some of the state's legislative branches are attempting to exert 'State's Rights' over federal military instillations. They don't have any right to impede the military. What this amounts to is a way of 'making a statement.' I suppose they could try to challenge the US DOD in the Supreme Court, but, that is like the tail wagging the dog, the States just don't have jurisdiction over the operation of the military.

Gingrey (R-Marietta) got the backing of the rest of Georgia’s Republican House members for his “No GITMO in Georgia Act” that he says will ensure current detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention center are not relocated to the Peach State when the Cuban facility closes....

President Barack Obama has signed an executive order calling for the closure of the Guantanamo prison within a year.
Today's brief debate sends the measure to final action.

HONG KONG: Hong Kong's key stock index rose more than 2 percent Wednesday on better-than-expected news about China's manufacturing industry.
The blue-chip Hang Seng Index added 287, or 2.3 percent, to 13,063.89.
Investors were heartened by a report pointing to possible recovery in Chinese manufacturing. While manufacturing shrank again in January, the contraction was less severe than in recent months and seen by some as a sign China's stimulus measures might be taking hold.
"The results suggest that government measures to revive lending and infrastructure spending as well as to boost consumption are beginning to work," Dariusz Kowalczyk, chief investment strategist of SJS Markets, wrote in a report Wednesday.
Shares in commodity producers and shippers led the way on hope of greater demand for resources in China....

If Europe and Asia want a stimulus package they can do it themselves. Does anyone actually believe there is a reason to 'share?'

NO !

This stimulus is NOT a global stimulus, it is a stimulus designed to return jobs to the American people and the USA TAX BASE.

I do believe Mr. Geithner, who seems to think he can railroad over top of American workers by capping Executive pay, wants to hand over OUR country's stimulus to every other country in the world.

Hell NO !

The last $700 billion BAILOUT 'got lost in the shuffle' somewhere between the shores of the USA and that of Europe and Asia. The Stimulus is NOT going to do the same thing. I am a bit outraged by the 'siding' with more OUT SOURCING by Mr. Geithner, a 'Goldman Sachs' Homeboy ! He needs to resign and PAY HIS TAXES !

This is a President to be proud of. This bill will lighten the load of the states and the Governors can start to prioritize a little differently.

President Barack Obama signed the bill Wednesday. It calls for spending an additional $32.8 billion on the State Children's Health Insurance Program, known as SCHIP. It currently enrolls an estimated 7 million children.

North Dakota Congressman Earl Pomeroy and Senator Byron Dorgan say the bill will ensure that about 3,500 North Dakota children enrolled in the Healthy Steps program will continue to have coverage. And another 1,300 children are now expected to be covered.

Why should we pay for thier golden parachutes? What did they ever do for us?

I am proud of the President. He did well. This is going to 'move' the executives that are holding on to their positions from those jobs. It will make room for new and younger executives that are anxious to turn the corner on corporate failure. They'll come into the job, hone the companies they lead and begin 'again' to earn higher salaries and bonuses.

Nice. It is about time the young people in this country has a chance to lead their own economy. Very nice. I can't wait.
