GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Authorities were waiting for daylight early Friday so they could begin assessing the damage from a reported tornado that killed one person and injured three others in central North Carolina.
What law enforcement officers said was a tornado touched down on the outskirts of Greensboro late Thursday as severe storms swept across the Southeast, damaging homes and businesses in at least three other states.
An apparent tornado also wrecked a shopping area in Mississippi and strong winds flipped a mobile home in Alabama. In south-central Tennessee, at least four homes and a few barns were damaged.
The person killed was in a small truck that overturned in a parking lot in a parking lot west of Greensboro, said Alan Perdue, emergency services director for Guilford County. He did not have other details.
The storm also knocked down a wall at a distributing business, sending one person to the hospital, Perdue said. Two others were hurt while in vehicles, but Perdue said he did not know what happened. None of the injuries were considered life threatening.
The Winston-Salem Journal quoted the North Carolina Highway Patrol as saying the storm blew three tractor-trailers off Interstate 40....

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A line of severe storms that swept aross the Southeast damaged homes and businesses in at least four states, including Alabama.
Authorities say one person was killed and three injured by a tornado in North Carolina.
An apparent tornado wrecked a shopping area in Mississippi and strong winds flipped a mobile home in Alabama yesterday. In south-central Tennessee, at least four homes and a few barns were damaged.
In Alabama, at least 15 school systems released students early, while others held students late as squalls passed. Winds blew a piece of metal roofing off Hamilton High School, about 90 miles northwest of Birmingham.
There were no confirmed reports of tornadoes in Alabama. But the emergency management director in Lauderdale County, George Grabryan, says winds gusting up to 60 miles an hour flipped a mobile home. A house and a building in the rural county also were damaged.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Fierce clashes raged in Beirut on Thursday after Hizbollah said the Lebanese government had declared war by targeting its communications network.
Fighters from Hizbollah and the allied Amal group exchanged assault rifle fire and rocket-propelled grenades with pro-government gunmen in several areas of the capital in the worst domestic fighting since the 1975-90 civil war.
Security sources said at least one person was killed and eight were wounded in the fighting that also set several shops and cars on fire.
Hizbollah launched a new street campaign on Wednesday, piling pressure on the government after it declared the network illegal and removed the head of airport security, a figure close to the group, from his post.
Supporters of Hizbollah and its allies have blocked roads leading to the airport-Lebanon's only air link to the outside world-and other main streets, paralysing much of the capital.

The reason the Junta in Myanmar is resisting any entrance by other countries is due to the instability to even its 'wealth' markets. Myanmar supplies to the world markets are based in the management of natural resources including it's rice fields and forests where exports serve millions around the world. The devastation to the landscape of Myanmar leaves its controlling government at a loss to know where its best to place its security forces to protect the nation's resources that are left. The world needs to facilitate the Myanmar's governments intelligence gathering to secure the country while allowing relief supplies to enter along with aide workers. I do believe Russia has a better rapport with the Myanmar than the West.

Obviously any intelligence supplied to The Middle East by The West, regarding groups involved with power struggles has been unable to stem any violence or overthrow. The world stability is in question and Russia is going to have to come front and center to improve the stability of regions globally. I don't know any other government can or will act to CAUSE stability rather than greater unrest. Russia must address the UN Security Council if not the General Assembly as an ally to Saudi Arabia in reaching conclusions about the region.

The Kingdom had earlier warned Lebanese groups that any escalation of violence in their country would only benefit external extremist forces, the Saudi Press Agency said quoting an official source.
“The Kingdom urges the groups behind the escalation to reconsider their position, and to realize that turmoil in Lebanon will not bring victory to any party except extremist external forces.”
These forces “are still hindering every sincere and honest effort to end the political crisis in Lebanon,” the Kingdom said, and urged Lebanese factions to listen to the voice of reason and give top priority to their country’s interests.
Meanwhile, the Gulf Cooperation Council yesterday expressed deep concern over the latest developments in Lebanon and urged warring Lebanese groups for restraint.
Abdul Rahman Al-Attiyah, secretary-general of the GCC, called upon the Lebanese groups to exert sincere efforts to forge unity in order to solve the present crisis. “You have to tackle the situation with wisdom, which is essential to solve problems.”

WASHINGTON - Bernard Kerik, President Bush's choice to run the Homeland Security Department, made $6.2 million by exercising stock options he received from a company that sold stun guns to the department — and seeks more business with it.
Taser International was one of many companies that received consulting advice from Kerik after he left his job as New York City police commissioner in 2001, when he was earning $150,500 a year. Kerik remains on Taser's board of directors, although the company and the White House said he planned to sever the relationship.
Partnering with former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and also operating independently, Kerik has had business arrangements with manufacturers of prescription drugs, computer software and bulletproof materials, as well as companies selling nuclear power, telephone service, insurance and security advice for Americans working abroad....

According to senior police sources, barrister Mark Saunders, 32, died at the scene after being tasered by specialist officers.

It was believed originally that the former army solider died either from his own bullet or one fired by CO19 firearms officers, involved in their first fatal firefight since the death of Jean Charles de Menezes.
We contacted the Independent Police Complaints Commission who is investigating the circumstances of Mr Saunders death, and they refused to comment one way or the other until a full post mortem was carried out.
'Intended to detain'
Our source also revealed that officers had intended to only 'detain' the individual. There were reports of an exchange of fire on the streets and later inside the man’s home when police stormed the barricaded property. Four explosions were later heard believed to be smoke or stun grenades bringing the five hour siege to an end.
Controversial 'non lethal' weapons
The use of police tasers have been criticised after several deaths in America seemingly linked to the devices use. Just last week media access was given to a police pilot scheme to widen their use in England and Wales. The taser is intended to be a non lethal way of dealing with dangerous situations.
Previously only a trained officer could use the weapons, but under new laws an officer can carry the shock devices after only two days training. Amnesty International called it the start of a "slippery slope".

VANCOUVER — Police across North American have earned the moniker ``psychiatrists in blue,'' for their constant intervention with the mentally ill.It's for that reason that the Canadian Medical Health Association implored the head of B.C.'s Taser inquiry to convince police to talk more and use their Taser less.
``We certainly recognize that police in British Columbia, actually across North America, are increasingly first responders to mental-health crises,'' said the association's Camia Weaver.
``There's no doubt they have become the front-line mental health workers in recent years.''
She told inquiry Commissioner Thomas Braidwood it's not a position the police want to have, but it's a reality.
The statistics show that over 30 per cent of people in B.C. who are receiving mental health services got there by having some kind confrontation with police first....

There were 103 Taser stun gun-related deaths in the United States and Canada between June 2001 and March 2005, according to an Amnesty International report.
In the first three months of this year, there were 13 Taser-related deaths - compared with six in the same period last year, the report said.
The stun guns have been touted as less lethal than other ways of subduing combative people in high-risk situations, but Tasers have come under increasing scrutiny as a number of deaths have been blamed, at least partially, on the devices.
"No confrontation is risk-free. The Taser is the safest way to end violent confrontations for law enforcement," Taser International President Tom Smith said.
The report challenged Taser's claims that the stun guns had saved more than 6,000 lives.
"Taser International wildly exaggerates the number of incidents in which the use of a Taser resulted in a life saved," the report said.
Smith said the company's statistics were conservative and based on fact.
"This is just a further example of how out of touch this organisation (Amnesty International) is with the law enforcement community," Smith said.
Stun guns produced by Scottsdale-based Taser are used by more than 6,000 law enforcement agencies worldwide.

The littel coastal country called Myanmar was also hit with sea level rise when the cyclone landed. This is a completelly flooded area and the body count, no different than the tsunami, will never be completely realized because bodies have been washed out to sea.

This is a biologically sensitive area where species are being demised due to a turbulent troposhere as I write this. There needs to be a full dispatch of scientists to assess the damage and discover the economic impact from the biotic loss of the region.

There are tree species in Myanmar that are used on the global cosmetics market. There is huge economic losses due to this cyclone.

Conservationists need to start immediately to restore the biotic content of the devastated area, otherwise, there will be vast impoverishment of the people surviving this tragedy.

The $178 billion-plus measure will also carry legislation costing $16 billion over two years to extend unemployment insurance coverage for jobless people whose benefits have run out. Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan would begin to receive a big boost in college aid.
Barring any unexpected developments, the war funding bill would be the last one passed during President Bush's tenure in office. It would bring the amount approved by Congress since Sept. 11, 2001, to fight terrorism and conduct the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to $875 billion....

Iran says it will not hold a fourth round of talks with the U.S. on security in Iraq, as long as U.S. forces continue what it called "open bombings" in Iraq.

U.S. and Iraqi forces have fought fierce battles against Shi'ite militiamen loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr in Sadr City for the past month.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Tom Casey said the U.S. is still ready for security talks with Iran, but said they are meaningless as long as Tehran does not change its behavior. The U.S. has repeatedly accused Iran of supporting militias in Iraq, which Tehran denies....

It doesn’t look as though Americans in Iraq are going anywhere anytime soon. Officially Iraq’s sovereignty was handed back to its rightful owners years ago, which means the occupiers remain in the country at the invitation of the Iraqi government. OK, try not to laugh!
Fact is the occupying power is digging in for the long haul and there is little the Iraqi leadership can do about it even if it wanted to. When challenged about their supersized, superfortified embassy sprouting on prime land — which one must assume was sequestered rather than gifted by Iraq — and their mushrooming permanent military bases, the Americans cite the postwar German/Japan models.
In other words, they are saying the victor has a perfect right to hang around the necks of the vanquished in perpetuity.
In this case, I don’t blame Arab governments for refusing to send their diplomatic personnel into the jaws of danger merely to hobnob with Iraqi officials for the purposes of affording them legitimacy when, as we know, the real decision-making takes place in Washington.
It could be that the Pentagon’s new plan to transform the so-called Green Zone into a walled-off oases of 21st century Western luxury is, in part, an attempt to lure reluctant ambassadors into lending credibility to the game with their mere presence and encourage their own diplomats to put their lives on the line.
According to the Associated Press, the US has a $5 billion, “five-year development ‘dream list’ to create a zone of influence around the new $700 million embassy to serve as a kind of high-end buffer for the compound”. In fact, it is now likely to cost more than $1.3 billion as we know from an emergency supplemental funding request delivered by President Bush to Congress in 2006....

Dead Horse Walking - Having fillies race against colts at this level of competition is a death sentence from the beginning. The fillies have as much 'heart' to win if not more, but, their bone and muscles structures are different and they suffer unrecoverable injuries as a result because they are 'competition' horses from their birth. They don't know when they are going to hurt themselves and they are the innocent in a game of 'horse play' where millions if not billions of dollars ride on the outcome of their performance.

In viewing the Oklahoma film of the vorticity actually 'on the ground' it was noted that it jumped in more instances than not as the 'drag' by the ground was causing skids of the upper winds that sheered off the funnel only to redirect its energies into still another funnel cloud. The tornado also lasted a long time in the video. Poses huge danger in its capacity and ability to direct its own path.

DAMASCUS, AK (CBS/AP) -- Tornadoes and severe storms ripped through four states Friday, leaving homes and businesses damaged and killing seven people in Arkansas, including a teenager while she slept in her bed and a father and his son.

Police said the 15-year-old girl was killed when a tree fell through a bedroom where she was sleeping at her home in Siloam Springs in north Arkansas. The father and son were in their mobile home in central Arkansas when they were killed, the Conway County Sheriff's Office said.

Three deaths also were confirmed in Van Buren County and another person was killed in Pulaski County. At least 13 people were injured throughout the state, emergency officials said.

In Oklahoma, storms produced tornadoes, strong winds and large hail, causing structural damage and power outages but no serious injuries, authorities said.

About 10,000 electric customers in the state lost power at one point, but most were back on by Friday afternoon.

At least three tornadoes raked across central and northern Oklahoma, including one in Osage County near Tulsa that was an estimated 100 yards wide.

The enormous weather-maker produced 24 tornadoes in 24 hours, reports CBS News correspondent Hari Sreenivasan....

SEATTLE — West Coast ports were shut down on Thursday as thousands of longshoremen failed to report for work, part of what their union leaders said was a one-day, one-shift protest against the war in Iraq.
Cranes and forklifts stood still from Seattle to San Diego, and ships were stalled at sea as workers held rallies up and down the coast to blame the war for distracting public attention and money from domestic needs like health care and education.
“We’re loyal to America, and we won’t stand by while our country, our troops and our economy are being destroyed by a war that’s bankrupting us to the tune of $3 trillion,” the president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, Bob McEllrath, said in a written statement. “It’s time to stand up, and we’re doing our part today.”
About 25,000 union members are employed at 29 West Coast ports, but the protest took place only during the day shift. A spokesman for the main West Coast employers’ group, the Pacific Maritime Association, said it appeared that about 6,000 workers did not show up for work, which meant that about 10,000 containers would not be loaded or unloaded from about 30 cargo ships....

At his news conference today, Mr. Bush found it important to focus on 'the psychology' of the country as well as others. Evidently, the 'psychology' of the moment is important and why it is important to SEND A MESSAGE.

Bush is a sociopath. Just that simple. Psychology. Okay then.

"...And so part of this is to make -- set the psychology right that says to the world, we're not going to become more beholden on your oil, we're going to open up and be aggressive and have an aggressive energy policy. Secondly, we're going to send the signal we're going to be building new refineries.

But there is no magic wand to wave right now. It took us a while to get to this fix. That's why I told you that if Congress had responded -- matter of fact, Congress did pass ANWR in the late 1900s -- 1990s -- and the 1900s -- (laughter) -- 1990s. But it didn't go forward. And it's my considered judgment, given the technological advances, to say this is -- we'll destroy the environment is just -- I don't think it's an accurate statement.

And so I think it's very important, Sheryl, for Congress. The other thing Congress can do, if you want to send a good signal during these uncertain times, is make the tax cuts permanent, is to let people -- send the signal that people are going to be able to keep their money. And I think that will help the psychology of the country...."

....The twister in this city outside Norfolk cut a fickle, zigzagging path 25 miles long through neighborhoods, obliterating some homes and spraying splintered wood across lawns while leaving those standing just a few feet away untouched....
...The National Weather Service confirmed that tornadoes struck Suffolk, Brunswick County, about sixty miles west, and Colonial Heights, about 60 miles northwest. Meteorologist Bryan Jackson described Suffolk's as a "major tornado."
The Brunswick County tornado was estimated at 86 mph to 110 mph, and cut a 300-yard path of destruction, Jackson said. It struck first, at about 1 p.m., said Mike Rusnak, a weather service meteorologist in Wakefield.
The second struck Colonial Heights around 3:40 p.m., he said.
The tornado believed to have caused damage over a 25-mile path from Suffolk to Norfolk touched down repeatedly between 4:30 and 5 p.m., Rusnak said.
At least 200 were injured in Suffolk and 18 others were injured in Colonial Heights, south of Richmond, said Bob Spieldenner of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management....

The first shot sounded sharply. It was clear something was wrong.
I heard the second crack, and a third, fourth, fifth, and at that point all the journalists were on the ground, ducking from the whizzing bullets. The Taliban were attacking a ceremony led by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
"Get down! Get down!" people yelled to each other.
Karzai and hundreds of Afghan and foreign dignitaries had been preparing to take to their seats across from Kabul's largest mosque. They were marking the 16th anniversary of the fall of the Soviet-backed communist regime in Afghanistan.
The gunfire broke out as a marching band was playing the national anthem....


...Two American soldiers who had been saluting in the bleachers near the president pointed to some nearby houses, from where the gunfire appeared to have come. They still put their hands back up to their caps in salute as the anthem ended.
Dozens of parliamentarians looked around in puzzlement before realizing the danger and scrambling for cover. Two lawmakers wearing turbans in the front row were hit by bullets. One was hit in the stomach and fell to the ground, the other slumped back in his seat, just 30 meters (yards) from where Karzai was sitting.
Karzai was hustled away, unhurt, by bodyguards to an exit at the back of the stand, and driven away in a convoy of four black SUVs.
Several minutes of automatic gunfire followed and a few louder explosions from rockets.
There was chaos as hundreds of people made their escape. The Cabinet ministers and foreign ambassadors sped away in their SUVs....



....I ran toward a three-meter (10-foot) -high wall with several other journalists clutching video cameras and tripods. To our surprise, uniformed soldiers and armed police followed hot on our heels. Uniformed musicians of the marching band also ran away.
"The security is so bad. How could they get so close to this event and fire right at us?" one army officer complained, panting with exhaustion, his face white with fear.
Soldiers barked at me to turn off my phone, fearing that anyone using a mobile phone could be helping to coordinate the attack.
Security appeared tighter than last year for the annual pageant.
Karzai had inspected assembled troops from a U.S.-supplied Humvee jeep, looking from a hatch in the roof, metal shields on either side of him. Last year he appeared in open-top jeep.
Soldiers in military vehicles had blocked off the main avenues leading to the ceremony site two days ago, and pedestrians were barred from surrounding hilltops overlooking the ceremony.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Scientists urged residents of northern Nevada's largest city to prepare for a bigger event as the area continued rumbling Saturday after the largest earthquake in a two-month-long series of temblors.
More than 100 aftershocks were recorded on the western edge of the city after a magnitude 4.7 quake hit Friday night, the strongest quake around Reno since one measuring 5.2 in 1953, said researchers at the seismological laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.
The latest quake swept store shelves clean, cracked walls in homes and dislodged rocks on hillsides, but there were no reports of injuries or widespread major damage....

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Geologists who gathered a week after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook the Midwest said they expect mild aftershocks to rattle the region for several weeks.
The latest aftershock, a 3.7 magnitude temblor, was felt in Evansville on Friday as geologists from nine states met in the southwestern Indiana city to discuss the recent quakes....

Moderate quake shakes up northwest Alaska (click here)

ANCHORAGE — A moderate earthquake is being reported in the Bering Strait region.
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center says the quake struck at 5:41 a.m. today. It had a preliminary magnitude of 5.0.
The earthquake was centered 34 miles southwest of Point Hope.
Dorcus Rock, a Point Hope resident, tells Alaska Public Radio Network that she was making coffee when she felt the quake. Rock says she initially thought she heard a tractor trailer passing by.
There are no immediate reports of damage.
