“Annabel Lee”
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of annabel lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my annabel lee;
With a love that the wingéd seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud by night,
Chilling my annabel lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me—;
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud, chilling
And killing my annabel lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful annabel lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful annabel lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Rice Endorsed by Senate Panel to Be Next Secretary of State
By DAVID STOUT
Published: January 19, 2005
WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 - Condoleezza Rice was overwhelmingly endorsed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today to be the next secretary of state, but only after some spirited exchanges signaled that Iraq will be a divisive issue in President Bush's second term.
The 16-to-2 vote by the panel cleared the way for Ms. Rice to be confirmed by the full Senate, in all probability in time for the inaugural celebrations on Friday that will mark the start of Mr. Bush's second four years in the White House.
… On Ms. Rice's nomination, all 10 Republicans on the Foreign Relations Committee voted in favor, as had been expected. Six of the panel's eight Democrats also voted in favor, with only Senators Barbara Boxer of California and John Kerry of Massachusetts in opposition.

Michael Moore Today
Michael Worries About The Students Being Safe. You know, there was a protest not long ago where the military rolled a tank into a peaceful demonstration in LA. We don't need nor want another Kent State. I have no doubt that this president is so hated that every law enforcement officer has orders to shoot to kill. Add to that the reality of SUPPOSED terrorists crossing the Mexican borders (although to me they look like one family. The two men have the same last name. The two women are probably their spouses. They are probably making their way to family/friends/support system somewhere.) and there is a bit of a toxic mix out there. Not just students but everyone needs to be aware today when 'interfacing' with legal authority today. Things are just a mess in this country. Bush is a hazard to every living person's health. But, Michael is a very vigilant man. This is his way of not only supplying support but insuring safety. He's something. When the rest of the country couldn't careless about these kids, Michael Moore is at his best. Thanks, Mike.

President launches US$3.5 billion recovery drive in Hambantota :
Let's join hands and rebuild the Nation from the ashes of tsunami
From Ranil Wijayapala and Mohamed Niyaz in Hambantota
President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a historic ceremony yesterday launching the US$3.5 billion recovery drive from Siribopura in Hambantota said the tsunami tragedy should be a new beginning to rebuild our nation by joining hands irrespective of caste, creed or political affiliation in a massive united effort in overcoming this unprecedented catastrophe, the worst in our history.

Dangerous ambivalence
When a comprehensive and objective history of the tsunami terror comes to be written, a special chapter may have to be devoted to the heroism, courage and humanity of the Lankan law enforcement authorities.
We need to place on record that the charitableness and valour of the Lankan Army, Navy and Police, in particularly the North-East, has done the Lankan State proud and proved the impartiality and fair - mindedness of the latter.
… But where was the LTTE when all this and more was happening? The Tigers have now emerged from their watery dugouts, may be, to cry "foul" at the Lankan State's initiatives aimed at reviving the North-East but were conspicuous by their absence when the people of the North-East were crying out to be assisted and saved. The North-East citizenry has seen this duplicity and is already contrasting the LTTE's negative role with the glowingly positive role played by the Lankan law enforcers.
Having thus lost credibility, the best the LTTE could do now is to join-up with the Government in bringing normalcy to the North-East. However, the LTTE seems to be having other agendas on its mind.
… Under the guidance of President Kumaratunga, the Government, on the other hand, is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to re-build the devastated areas of the North-East. As indicated by us yesterday, even a fleet of vehicles has been sent by the Government to the North to be of assistance in the LTTE's reconstruction effort.
However, the LTTE seems to be jealously guarding what it considers is its territory. Food convoys are being waylaid and State assistance in other forms are returned to sender. Nor is the LTTE ceasing the recruitment of child soldiers. Organisations such as UNICEF and Human Rights Watch have reported a stepped-up child soldier recruitment drive by the LTTE to, perhaps, replenish its combat cadres which were considerably wittled down by the tsunami.
Needless to say, this is no way to make peace with the Lankan State. The LTTE seems to be talking peace but readying for war. It is following a Janus-faced policy while loudly proclaiming a reconciliatory course with the Government. Such dangerous ambivalence wouldn't help the cause of peace. We call on the LTTE to grow-up and be responsible.

Singapore is pulling most of its military personnel out of Indonesia's tsunami-hit Aceh province as aid efforts switch from emergency relief to longer-term reconstruction work, the city-state's defence ministry said.
Forces from the wealthy island republic have concentrated on the shattered town of Meulaboh on Aceh's west coast, which was among the areas hardest hit by the December 26 earthquake and devastating tsunami.
"The initial rescue and relief operation is over, and now we are moving into the new stage of reconstruction," Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said Thursday as he toured Meulaboh. "It's time to turn it over to private groups."

Indonesia expects toll to rise 50%
January 20, 2005
The Indonesian tsunami death toll is likely to soar to 150,000 and Aceh province will need three to five years to rebuild, the government in Jakarta says.
"As of now, we know that there are over 100,000 dead and 40,000 missing," President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told a conference of donors in Jakarta. "There are about 500,000 homeless people in the emergency camps and thousands of tsunami orphans."
Indonesia's Social Affairs Ministry had put the number of missing as of Tuesday at 12,070 but Haniff Asmara, the secretary of the disaster control force in Aceh, said 89,832 bodies had been retrieved and another 60,000 bodies were expected to be recovered over the next four weeks.
"Perhaps we will never know the exact scale of the human casualties," Dr Yudhoyono said.
… The organisation's spokesman, Chris Lom, said a convoy of 40 trucks returning from Banda Aceh, the aid distribution hub for Aceh, to the North Sumatran capital of Medan had been forced to stop overnight, midway through its journey, because of floods.
The convoy, which was supposed to make the journey in 24 hours, was stuck somewhere near the border between Aceh and North Sumatra.
"Flooding is a bigger problem than security," he said.

You and I are cultural and political creatures living in an age of science and technology. From sexuality to liposuction to surveillance to cloning, we're being overrun by technologies full of implications about who we are and how we should live. The purpose of Human Nature is to expose and discuss those implications. In the weeks to come, what you'll find here is a steady diet of news updates and quick takes, coupled with longer columns exploring some topics more thoroughly.
Let's start with a few updates.
PREEMIES
Item: Most premature babies who survive to age six have disabilities.
Source: New England Journal of Medicine
Outlet: Associated Press, Jan. 6
Gist: Eighty percent of 6-year-old children who were born between the 22nd and 25th weeks of pregnancy (the current lower limit) have disabilities, and 46 percent have severe or moderate disabilities (cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, hearing loss, vision problems, etc.).
Implication drawn by the researchers: "Parents need to go into this situation with their eyes wide open and with an open dialogue with their doctors as to what they should do."
Translation: Pull the plug.
Other implications: According to the AP, "The rate of premature births in the United States has crept up in recent years, in part because of a rise in multiple births and older mothers." So think twice about IVF, ladies.
