The rise of the Sunni militias won't last long if Iran begins to realize this is an attack on Shi'ites.

Besides Iran there are forces in Saudi Arabia that won't tolerate militants killing and destroying lives and cities in Al Anbar. I just don't see the militant forces being successful. The refugees need to leave. Sunnis or no Sunni rebels if they are killing people in An Albar there will be problems for them. Saudi Arabia and Iran won't put up with that level of instability along their borders.

BAGHDAD — Sunni militants (click here) extended their control over parts of northern and western Iraq on Wednesday as Iraqi government forces crumbled in disarray. The militants overran the city of Tikrit, seized facilities in the strategic oil refining town of Baiji, and threatened an important Shiite shrine in Samarra as they moved south toward Baghdad.
The remarkably rapid advance of the Sunni militants, who on Tuesday seized the northern city of Mosul as Iraqi forces fled or surrendered, reflects the spillover of the Sunni insurgency in Syria and the inability of Iraq’s Shiite-led government to pacify the country after American forces departed in 2011 following eight years of war and occupation....

The territory they influence is in red. They have been rather cowards to date. They are staying away from borders with nations far more powerful then they could ever hope to be.

There is something like 2500 members. When large groups take on check points there will be surrender simply because they are outnumbered.

This group used to be al Qaeda in Iraq. They have pulled off most of the horrific events in Iraq dating back to 2003. They have never been able to establish any consistent governing. Their specialty is violence. 

The map is slightly outdated. Their activities have been primarily along the rivers, but, lately they have moved into the Kurdish area in northern Iraq. It could be Turkey they are taking aim at. They already have a presence along the Turkish border with Syria. Turkey has been defeating elements in the mountains there. But, if they expand west in to Kurdish territory they could have a presence along a longer strip of that same border. Turkey has successfully dealt with them in bombing campaigns. It gets tricky, the militias do have anti-aircraft guns.

There were originally six Taliban detainees to be a part of the prisoner exchange and one died.

What did he die from?

There was no calculation to make about the recapture of the five Taliban prisoners exchanged for an American life. There is absolutely no calculation to make. The Qataris were to hold the five in Qatar for a year before allowing them to leave. They were released from Gitmo in June 2014 and we are ending combat operations on December 31, 2014. There is no calculation to their recapture because there will be no recapture.

Aren't the California civil courts the wrong jurisdiction for a union contract?

Did the NLRB send it to the civil courts? Most union contract issues are heard by the NLRB. I find it surprising the California courts actually accepted jurisdictional authority over a contract issue.

Teacher evaluations (click here) have been a hot topic in education lately. While adults debate their value, students are largely left out of the discussion. But kids can provide a lot more than test scores to help their teachers improve. Even kindergarten students can communicate their teachers’ strengths and weaknesses, and by middle and high school, most kids have an idea of the qualities that make a good teacher.In a recent New York Times article, blogger Jessica Lahey went straight to the source, asking students across the country about the one thing they wished their teachers knew. The most popular answer? “Be fair.” Students noticed when teachers picked favorites or treated boys and girls differently....

I agree there should be limits on tenure when a teacher is unable to function effectively with students, but, tenure is a valauble asset to most teachers. Tenure insures they can teach their classes without oppressive influence from any administration. But, any abusive aspect to tenure should be removed to insure quality education.

Tenure doesn't have to be destroyed to deal with it's flaws.

CAIRO — An Egyptian court sentenced prominent activist Alla Abdel-Fattah and 24 others to 15 years in prison Wednesday, in a continuing government crackdown on dissent.

Abdel-Fattah and his colleagues were convicted of protesting a restrictive protest law passed last November - legislation human rights group have called repressive.  They were also charged with attacking a police officer and disturbing the peace....

Dictatorships don't work in the Middle East.

...As well as police stations, (click here) army bases and the airport, the insurgents have captured two prisons and freed 1,200 prisoners, many of them Isis fighters. Roads out of Mosul are choked with refugees heading for what they hope is safety in Kurdish-held territory....

This really is a failure for the Kurds. But, the Kurds have also contributed to the instability in the region. To some extent they should have expected it. Mosul was part of Iraqi Kurdistan. 

...Iraq's Kurds need stability in Mosul, which is just one hour's drive from the KRG capital of Irbil.

Many Kurds live in or around eastern Mosul and ISIS control of the city could pose a grave security threat to the Iraqi Kurdish region, which prides itself on providing a safe environment for investors....

This is exactly what the 2006 National Security Estimate addressed. The war in Iraq spawned more and more jihadist groups than it ever defeated.

...ISIS is a jihadist group that is very active and holds a lot of influence in both Iraq and Syria. The group has been linked to other terrorist organizations, such as Al Quida. Indeed, the group is in fact an offshoot of Al Qaeda and its forces are now among the most active in both Syria and Iraq. Many of the fighters in the group are actually foreign born jihadist driven by ideology, not any sense of local patriotism or desire for freedom....

It really up to the PPK in what occurs now. Will they give Turkey relief from attacks and act to secure the state of Nineveh. The Kurds were in the process of declaring an independence from Iraq. This entire state has been considered an autonomous region. Now, it is up to the jihadists and the PPK as to what occurs.

...Kurdish controlled areas of Iraq (click here) have been a relative bastion of peace and stability. The Kurds have been able to largely keep Jihadists out of their territory and their well-developed police and military forces have provided tight security in the Kurdish regions. Kurdish troops have successfully conquered Mosul previously, though it is not clear is the Kurdish military will intervene now.

Either way, it’s unlikely that the extremist Jihadists and more secular Kurdish will make good neighbors. Kurds in Syria have already come into conflict with Jihadists. Kurdish people tend to be more closely aligned with other Kurds, rather than any particular nation-state. As such, the widening rift between Kurds in Syria and ISIS could play a major role in Iraq....

It is all about natural resources and whom controls them. The Iraqi forces simply left when they came under attack.

...Some 250 guards at the refinery in Baiji withdrew to another town after the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants sent a delegation of tribal chiefs to persuade them to pull out.

The militants, in around 60 vehicles, moved into the city overnight and released prisoners in the town....

The prisoners are as good as fresh recruits, if they are fighting condition.

...The militants also seized the Turkish consulate in the city and reportedly kidnapped the head of the diplomatic mission and 24 staff members, according to police.

Families have made their way into the Kurdistan region, which has its own military force the Peshmerga.

Bodies of soldiers and policemen have been left in the street, according to reports....

The militants will hit Kirkuk soon and at that point the Kurds will decide their outcome.

McCain will call for arm shipments into Iraq to side with whatever entity best serves the political interests of The West. Then the PKK along side newly armed Kurdish forces will attack the jihadists while the people flee to refugee camps. Who are we to say the militias don't have a right to kill each other?

This could be a real opportunity for the Virginia Governor to lead Virginia's 7th out of an extremist tilt to assist the state to move the ball further down field in Washington, DC.

...A candidate running for the Democratic nomination in Virginia’s Eighth Congressional (click here) District, which includes the suburbs outside Washington, Mr. Beyer said in a radio ad that the president was “absolutely right” about health care, and that is just the start.
“In Congress, I’ll fight all efforts to repeal Obamacare, because making sure millions of Americans get affordable health care is the right thing to do,” he continued.
And his television ads check through a host of progressive positions — reproductive rights, equal pay, “common sense” gun laws and a carbon tax....

The Supreme Court didn't like the idea states had to participate in the Affordable Care Act's medicaid expansion. That expansion can be legislated differently to bring Medicaid to more people in the country, but, it would take a majority in the US House to do it.

The court stated medicaid could not be denied if a state didn't participate. States outside the Affordable Care Act still receive Medicaid monies. They simply don't receive the expanded version for two years prescribed by the ACA.

The most obvious legislation is to bring 'free' Medicaid to each state for two years with the option to 'try and buy.' If the additional expansion of Medicaid proves an enhancement to the state's economy and increases the health of the people, the state can continue to receive the expanded Medicaid in the future with somewhat higher federal participation. Certainly, if nothing else, the monies left over from the refusal to expand Medicaid by some states can be used to pay for an additional percentage of participating states in their third and fourth years post ACA. It will require a Democratic majority in the US House to do that.

The reason to relegislate the expansion is the obvious need of those left to flounder in the real world without it. In Florida, there was a case of a hard working mother of three children that left a spouse behind as well when the lack of health care caused her death. There is every reason to readdress the Medicaid expansion.

Charlene Dill would be alive today if her family received the Medicaid available in the ACA expansion. Her three children would still have a mother and her spouse would have a co-bread winner to the household.

Why were the immigrant children such an issue lately?

Dave Brat, (click here) who is challenging House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) in Tuesday's primary, believes Cantor betrayed his district on amnesty and shares the blame for surge in illegal immigrant children flooding into the country. 

"One you announced that kids are welcome, they're going to head in," Brat said on Breitbart News Sunday of Cantor's support for giving the children of illegal immigrants amnesty and citizenship because he believes it is one of the "founding principles" of the country. ...

Eric Cantor was the Tea Party that was suppose to be in charge of keeping Speaker Boehner in line. Remember? Cantor was always a threatening presence to the Speaker.

There is nothing more terrifying to the Tea Party than "Border Babies." I do mean terrify. It goes like this. A Border Baby is going to grow up American and become President and take over the country. That Border Baby will turn the USA into a Muslim Holy Land, hence, laws banning Sharia Law.

Rising numbers (click here) of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America are streaming into Texas to give birth, straining hospitals and costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, health officials say.

Doctors and health officials say they are overwhelmed by both the new arrivals and those immigrant mothers who already are in the state. Even Houston's feeling the pinch. An estimated 70 percent to 80 percent of the 10,587 births at Ben Taub General Hospital and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital last year were to undocumented immigrants, administrators say.

Also feeling the strain is Starr County, an already poor South Texas county that has the region's only taxpayer-supported hospital district....

Immigrants "want a U.S.-born baby" and know that emergency room staffers don't collect any money up front, said Dr. Mario Rodriguez, an obstetrician in Starr County.

"The word is out: Come to Starr County and get delivered for free. Why pay $1,000 in Mexico when you can get it for free?" Rodriguez said....

It is a long standing hatred drummed up after September 11th. Remember the big fuss and the demonstrations about the Mosque in Lower Manhattan near ground zero. It was sacrilegious according to the right wing extremists. That hate lingers and lingers. Here it is again.

The laws in states that obviously don't have success in preventing violence simply disobeys this precedent and allows guns in schools, parks, restaurants and any other public venue with the 'idea' having guns everywhere prevents deaths anywhere. 

It is not possible to have guns everywhere. Guns are expensive and expose the majority of Americans to make choices between gun purchase and paying the food bill. It is not reasonable to think Americans can own guns in the same way they pay the water bill. 

There is no statistic proving if there are guns present there are no deaths. Quite the contrary, the suicide rate among men result because of the presence of guns primarily.

Suicide is the third highest killer among the young in the USA. (click here) Where do we find homicide - suicides in the USA? Where do we find them most often involving violence against other young people? That's right schools. And what do we know? Suicide is the third highest reason for death among the young. And what is the favorite method of suicide? In 50.5 percent of the deaths in the USA of men that commit suicide it is guns. 

When are gun laws in the USA going to finally reflect what we know rather than what is politically correct according to the wealth merchant, the NRA?

How is the clean up of the contaminated rivers in North Carolina and Virginia resolved?

Don't place anyone one "on the dole." No inclusive environmental groups to oppress by legislating their ability to sue when the states closes down the clean up.

The clean up needs to be conducted through the authority of the US EPA Superfund capacity and the US Army Corp of Engineer dredging methodology.

Duke Energy is to be responsible for ALL THE CLEAN UP including any reimbursement to the EPA's Superfund and the US Army Corps oversight.

When a third party is overseeing the clean up it completely dissolves any and all conflict of interest. We know there is an inappropriate relationship between the NC Governor and Duke Energy. Any involvement by the State of North Carolina government that not only looked the other way, but, is being investigated for actively demoralizing DNR to the point of manipulating fines and outcomes; is gross malpractice of any judicial right to relief by the people of NC and Virginia.

There is no 'agreement' with the state governments that can be called anything but corruption. This is The Clean Water Act and it has federal jurisdiction. There will be no agreement between anyone in these circumstances that will hold water. Excuse the pun. This is a federal issue and there is no resolving it without the proper jurisdictional authority and oversight. Anything short of that reality is pure corruption, skirting the issue and seeking to dissolve Duke Energy of wrong doing.

WHERE IS THE NEW LEGISLATION FROM NORTH CAROLINE ENFORCING THE CLEAN WATER ACT to prevent this from ever happening again? It doesn't exist. Why? Because the state will dissolve the agreement as soon as it is signed and will not return to court to enforce any standards and the clean up will end. Now, why would an administration as corrupt as the McCrory administration ever sign legislation or write an executive order that demands enforcement of federal parameters as set by The Water Act?

North Carolina's executive administration is already in violation of the federal laws and the federal laws are still law of the land. In invoking substandard outcomes in the past, present and future, it is a foregone conclusion the McCrory administration are a bunch of zealot anarchists. The Clean Water Act is the law of the land, no different than Rowe v Wade, The Clean Air Act and The Endangered Species Act. These governors are anarchists and allow such behavior by their state legislators. They not only allow it by their signature to legislation that is illegal they encourage as seen with The Voting Rights Act.

And of course, regulating contractors is a big mistake. There should be no regulations at all right? Environmental and wildlife officials (click here) in North Carolina and Virginia signed an agreement with Duke Energy Monday for the cleanup of toxic coal ash from the Dan River, which flows through the two states.

The agreement requires Duke to pay any "reasonable" cost associated with the Feb. 2 spill at its power plant near Eden, which coated 70 miles of the river in gray sludge. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also a party to the deal....

...The nation’s largest electricity company has begun the task of vacuuming up large pockets of toxic ash that settled to the bottom of the river as far downstream as Danville, Virgina. Duke must also pay for the ongoing monitoring by government agencies of the spill’s impact on aquatic life.

The agreement places no cap on what the company might be required to spend. Duke said in April that it had spent $15 million on containing the spill and the immediate aftermath. But it reiterated in a regulatory filing to investors on Monday that it is unable to predict future costs for the cleanup, new laws passed in the wake of the spill or any environmental fines that might be levied against the company.

N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources spokeswoman Susan Massengale said Monday that the agreement provides "a process that attempts to avoid lawsuits by the parties," but does not bar the states from filing suit if the company does not uphold its commitments....       

What is the chance the states will file? The majority legislature in Virginia has just fallen to Republican influence in a scandal that will probably cost a woman a judgeship as well. Duke knows how to tie everyone up in knots, doesn't it? The so called agreement needs to be litigated.

I am sure the Former Secretary knows what it is to pinch pennies, but, they do not know poverty. That is different. Both she and the former President have sought to end poverty in the USA. That is a fact.

This is not an aspiration book. This book was contemplated a long time ago. She was once asked after about two years as Secretary of State what she will do when she leaves office and she stated, "I am going to write." This was something she has longed to do and hasn't had time to do. This book was a long time in coming. 

...Hillary Rodham Clinton (click here) said Tuesday that she and former President Bill Clinton "fully appreciate how hard life is for so many Americans," seeking to refine remarks she made about the pair being "dead broke" when they left the White House.

At the same time, the former secretary of state dropped another hint that she might be leaning toward a second run for the presidency. Clinton said that she and her husband have "gone through some of the same challenges that many people have" and that they "understand what that struggle is."

In an interview on the day her book "Hard Choices" was being released, Clinton told ABC's "Good Morning America" that she and her husband left the White House roughly $12 million in debt at the end of his second term in early 2001. But she also acknowledged that "we've continued to be blessed in the last 14 years."...

But, true to form, the right wing is using the book for talking points. They have no ideas so they have to find their rhetoric where they can find it.

I should correct that, it isn't as though Republicans have no ideas, they simply have bad ideas based in crony politics. Privatizing SSI, vouchers for medicare, fracking. They have plenty ideas, they are just completely horrid ideas.

But one of the worse ideas was about the idea the Clintons have lived in public housing since 1978. That is hideous. It simply isn't true. It is maligning bullshit.

...The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) (click here) said the casualties occurred on Monday when the unit came into contact with enemy forces. It did not give the nationality of the dead soldiers.

Local police chief Ghulam Sakhi Roghlewanai said of the incident in Zabul province's Arghandab district: "The five killed were American soldiers who just returned from an operation when they were hit.

"ISAF troops were returning to their bases after an operation when they were ambushed by the insurgents. The air strike mistakenly hit their own forces and killed the soldiers."

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said insurgents had been attacking the foreign forces when the helicopters intervened and accidentally killed their own troops....

The soldiers were even involved in fighting when this occurred. They survived the ambush to be killed by their back up helicopter. ????????????????

They need to come home.

All the more reason to know whom comprises the militia, where they are and what they do with their time.

Those participating in the Triple Crown need to review the rules. Sorry, but, Chrome was the better horse. He ran the longest distance and had the heart to do it.

...Before a crowd (click here) of tens of thousands hoping to see history, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner finished in a dead-heat for fourth with Wicked Strong. California Chrome's loss extended the longest drought without a Triple Crown champion to 36 years. Then, in an interview with Yahoo! Sports Saturday, Coburn called the horses that skipped the first two races of the Triple Crown and just raced in the Belmont Stakes "cheaters" who took the "coward's way out."

This isn't about good sportsmanship. This isn't a high school win. This is about big bucks, but, more importantly it is about the breed.

Sportsmanship is an excuse to avoid the topic. While Chrome is the most valuable thoroughbred as a three year old and needs to retire to stud, he was unable to secure his rightful title. 

The other horses entering the Belmont while standing outside the Triple Crown are there to pay monies to the track and registry to participate. They have a purpose. It is about money. The bragging rights is that if the winner of the Belmont had only won the other two the Triple Crown would have been won this year. The winner of the Belmont was not the best horse on the track.

If the winner of the Belmont is not the best horse on the track and yet was able to defeat the Triple Crown Winner due to strategy, we are back to pumping lasix and pain killers into horses again. We will return to lousy breed lines that will once again destroy the breed. 

The registry needs to look at what it is doing and improve the quality of the race to be sure the breed is getting stronger and not weaker.

Cattle rustlers killed the people in Las Vegas. Did I hear that right?

They are cattle rustlers. The cows belong to the government. The US government rounded them up under a court order and then the hostilities forced the US to stop the rightful possession of the cows in fear of both employee and citizen lives. But, they are cattle rustlers. They stole the cows that rightfully belonged to the US.

Does the Sheriff and Governor involved in all this drama and political handywork at all feel responsible for the death of these people, including law enforcement officers?

Does FOX News hold any responsibility for escalating the circumstances at the Bundy ranch out of control?

"This is just the beginning," Shahidullah Shahid, spokesman for the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) told the Express Tribune, a Pakistani daily.

The attack began late overnight Monday after 10 men armed with machine guns, grenades and rocket launchers stormed the busy airport at a terminal for cargo and VIP passengers, known as the old airport, military officials said. Some of the attackers were wearing suicide vests, with at least one blowing himself up as law enforcement approached.... 

Bergdahl is not to hold rank in the USA military ever again. He had ambitions, as an anarchist to rise in rank and carry out his personal directives. He is untrustworthy and should have never made it to Sargeant. He is a christian neocon. His personal ambitions were more important than his unit. He was a good soldier, but, not trustworthy and the USA military should have discharged him with his first AWOL.

The problem in regard to Bergdahl lies with the USA military and it's ability to maintain discipline.

Rumsfeld was too much in a hurry to get to Iraq and by passed the march through Pakistan to get to bin Laden in Afghanistan. Rumsfeld allowed the corruption of the ISI and the presence of Haqqani (click here). This attack on the VIP section of the airport is simply an extension of Rumsfeld's failed war.

There are some jeering at Scott McClellan for not resigning earlier and not speaking up sooner (as he has now done in his new book) about what he knew about the misdeeds and deception being promulgated from Oval Office central in the White House....

Afghanistan needs a new president committed to peace within it's borders and prosperity for it's people.

The future is them. The monsters they are inheriting they need to defeat for survival are far more daunting than any other generation on Earth. And, yes, even more so than the so called "Greatest Generation" of WWII.

Hitler was no small accomplishment, but, besides the victory and survival of civilization it was a generation of indulgence as was that of the next. There is no passing of the torch of peace and/or environmental stewardship by any generation to precede them.

For those of you planting your garden by the phases of the moon and signs of the zodiac (click here) — and if you are reading this then there is a good chance your are at least trying — here’s this week’s information.

The moon is in the light phase for planting above-ground producers and will remain there until the full moon comes into force at 12:11 a.m. Friday.

Monday through Wednesday of this week will be a great stretch for getting all of your above-ground producing, warm-weather-loving veggies in the ground, even if you haven’t planted the first thing. The moon is in the light phase and the sign is in Scorpio (the secrets).

Each year I mention one of my most productive gardens wasn’t even started until June 20 so while there’s plenty of time, you need to get on with it now and this will be a great stretch for it. We saw this year we can have a cold snap very late — and on the other end of the spectrum we can have one very early in the fall....
