Michael Moore Today

This is getting serious. The government needs to respect the intention of it's young scholars. They are serious and not disposable by some stupid government intervention to control the issue !!! They better not get hurt !! THE WORLD IS WATCHING !!! Those young demonstrators belong to all of us and we stand between them and government trashed dreams to end nuclear proliferation. Remember Bikini Island. Write your Congressmen and Senators. Stop this insane military domination of our universities. Make their efforts COUNT. I am proud of every ONE of them. You know they are in it for the long haul, so should we be. Food and water to the demonstrators, NO AGGRESSION by authorities !!! They have a right to make a stand.

Activists Take Over University of Hawaii President's Office in Protest of Proposed Military Research Lab

Day Six!

Protesters present new demands to University of Hawaii president

By Ron Staton / Associated Press

HONOLULU - Protesters occupying the University of Hawaii president's office against a proposed Navy research center on campus delivered new demands to interim President David McClain Monday morning, asking for a quick response and 10 days to take action.

If McClain agrees to the demands, protesters said they would end their five-day sit-in.
"I find much in it with which I can agree," McClain said in a statement acknowledging that he had received the protesters' list of demands. "I have referred it to university counsel for the expeditious review and will have a response no later than Tuesday."

Justices to Decide if Colleges Can Bar Military Recruiters

By David Stout / New York Times
WASHINGTON, May 2 - The Supreme Court agreed

today to consider a case involving national defense, concepts of patriotism and free speech and, not incidentally, billions of dollars in federal money.

The justices announced that they would review a lower-court ruling, in favor of 25 law schools, that universities may bar military recruiters from their campuses without risking the loss of federal aid. Arguments will be heard in the justices' next term, which begins in October.

Quakes rock southern New Zealand
May 3, 2005 - 10:44AM

Two strong earthquakes have rocked much of New Zealand's South Island, smashing crockery and glasses in several homes, residents said.
A magnitude six quake hit South Island's west coast at 3.35am (1.35am AEST), followed five minutes later by a 5.7-magnitude temblor, geologists reported.
The quakes were centred about 10 kilometres south of the small town of Haast, and about 10-15 kilometres beneath the earth's surface.

Indonesian lawyers for the Bali nine have accused Australian Federal Police investigators of illegal interference in their clients' case.
Lawyer Rifan Mohammad, who represents five of the nine including the two accused ringleaders, said at least two AFP officers had attempted to interrogate some of the suspects directly - something forbidden under a cooperation agreement between the two countries.

Bomb explodes in Mogadishu at PM's rally
May 3, 2005 - 7:44PM

A bomb exploded in Mogadishu's soccer stadium on Tuesday just as the new prime minister began to address a rally intended to build support for his exiled government, leaving at least one person dead.
The prime minister, Ali Mohamed Gedi, was not injured and was immediately rushed away from the scene, where it appeared at least 11 people were seriously injured.
Government officials said Gedi was taken to "a safe location" north of Mogadishu.
Hundreds of people had gathered in the stadium to hear Gedi discuss plans to bring the government to Mogadishu.

Annan warns of nuclear threat
May 3, 2005 - 2:49PM

The voice was soft, calm and familiar. But the scenario UN Secretary General Kofi Annan sketched out was chilling.
A nuclear bomb goes off in a great city. Chaos ensues.
A frightened world asks: "Was this an act of terrorism? Was it an act of aggression by a state? Was it an accident?"
Tens or hundreds of thousands would die, the UN chief said, and questions, implications and dread would consume world leaders.

Iran moves first to blunt White House attack
Iran is planning to mount a staunch defence of its nuclear energy program during an international conference and will insist it has rights to the same technology afforded to all members of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The high-level counter offensive at the United Nations, to be led by the Iranian Foreign Minister, Kamal Kharrazi, comes in anticipation of a tough speech the Bush Administration was preparing to give calling for international measures against Tehran unless it gives up sensitive aspects of its nuclear program.

Barely there

Patty Huntington and Kimberley Porteous report from today's shows at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week in Sydney.
3pm: BARE by REBECCA DAVIES
It's going to be another summer of beachside glamour for Rebecca Davies girls.
There was an elegant 70s' mood to some of the floaty off-the-shoulder tops and embroidered kaftans, in summery colours of aqua, white, pistachio, pink, latte, and watermelon, as well as some psychedelic prints.
Some luscious halter-neck gowns and supple satin sheaths, edged in sparkle, were a delectable finale.

ROME - Italy has hit back at an American report clearing US troops who shot and killed the chief of Italian military intelligence in Baghdad after he had secured the release of a hostage in the Iraqi capital.

A separate Italian report on the affair, released last night, appeared to cast doubt on the reliability of the US investigation into the death of Nicola Calipari, re-opening the argument between Washington and Rome over the circumstances of his killing.

Imagine an Olympic event that involved dissecting parts of a cockroach, or counting the cells in a blood smear on a slide.
It’s doubtful such tests of skill would attract many spectators. But dissection of insects and plants, and peering down microscopes are just the sort of events four budding biologists will attempt when New Zealand sends its first team to the International Biology Olympiad.
