Monitoring weather before departing can prevent tragedy

April 7, 2007

Shady Cove, Oregon

Photographer states :: My husband and I took another of our drives up into the mountains Saturday. We were trying to locate the Cow Creek Trailhead at Railroad Gap, which is up west of Prospect and Union Creek, OR. We found evidence of a major storm that blew down many trees, including this big Douglas Fir. This one was a very old tree, and it fell on the former site of a cabin for travelers. I called a friend, who's meteorologist, and he said that in looking back over the weather for the past few months, this is probably from a storm that we had blow through here on 12/14/2006. It came with 50 mph winds down here in the Rogue Valley, so we can only imagine how hard it was blowing up on the Rogue-Umpqua divide.

Basic weather radios cost as little as $15, with the more advanced radios with alarm features costing around $50. They can be purchased at most electronics stores.
