Katrina

August 27, 2005.
Gulf Cove, Florida.

This is the type of picture storm chasers and meterologists seek.

Most of the time no one 'bothers' to try to take pictures of the periphery of a storm of this dynamic because to get this close means the picture taker should have moved on to safer ground.

But, here it is.

It is a leading edge of Katrina. It's extremely atypical to me.

This is as close to a 'near' Cat 5 as the USA has ever gotten a picture of while realizing this is actually an 'eddy' to the Arctic Ocean vortex.

Katrina was still at sea at this time and still fueled.

I've seen trailing edges of hurricanes that were very impressive but also very classic. I have never seen anything like this. Whatever was in the path of this storm never had a chance. You can easily see the very powerful and tight circulation. Posted by Picasa
