August 29, 2005. We have a lot of Black Bears in North Carolina. They sometimes get hit by autos on the interstate as they cross from wilderness to civilization. It isn't frequent they come into towns, but, it does happen. This is a very slim female with three of her cubs raiding a bird feeder in a backyard. It is a quandry why the female is so skinny except it requires a lot of calories to provide milk to four cubs as healthy as these are. The photographer states :: A manipulated image, due to taking it through a few layers of window glass. This slim mother bear brought her four cubs to forage at our bird feeders. It was the first time any of us had seen a mother bear and her cubs. The fourth one was smaller and slower and didn't make to the feeder in time for the photo.
