When I was working as a shop steward there were significant benefits:
To begin there were 14 paid holidays. If I had to work on those holidays I received time and a half overtime pay.

If a person was of another faith besides Christian they were allowed to take their equivalent holiday off with pay, but, would relinquish their right to any Christian holiday pay. They would also be requested to staff as it was an essential service.
