Anti-Defamation League Criticizes Vatican Newspaper Report On Tsunami

Gary Fitleberg, December 30, 2004

The Anti-Defamation League criticized a Vatican newspaper for falsely claiming Israel had denied relief to Sri Lanka after this week’s tsunami.
The ADL noted that contrary to the report in L’Osservatore Romano, Sri Lankan officials had rejected Israel’s offer to provide a large team to help with search-and-rescue efforts because it contained Israeli military personnel, though it had agreed to a smaller team.
"This is a case of wishing to believe the worst about Israel, whether or not it is true," the ADL’s national director, Abraham Foxman, said in a statement. Sri Lankan officials reportedly had worried that the Israeli military component to the relief could anger Muslim residents.

Imus told listeners on his show, which emanates from WFAN in New York and is simulcast on MSNBC, that he wrote a two-word note on the letter he received from the ADL, but refused to elaborate.

Insurers call for action to fight climate change in the wake of Asian tsunami

The tsunami triggered by the seaquake in Southeast Asia may cause massive losses for insurers.
Munich Re, the world’s largest reinsurer, estimates losses to hover around 10 billion euros ($13.6 billion), more of a tentative estimate as the exact numbers are not yet available. Munich Re believes its own losses will total about 100 million euros, due to the fact that high-value insured property is restricted to tourist and harbor areas.

The polar melt in Antarctica
Glaciers are melting in the Alps at an unprecedented rate. The polar ice caps are rapidly disappearing. Worst-case scenarios from scientists predict a dramatic increase in temperatures across much of the globe. For parts of the Northern Hemisphere, however, some scientists warn that ocean-current changes could produce radical cooling. Our world, so go such arguments, is about to change radically for the worse.

Slowing global warming
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD
Stronger vehicle emission standards would do something to limit the amount of greenhouse gases pumped into the atmosphere. Cleaner, more efficient vehicle engines would also improve the quality of air around the Puget Sound region.
