9/8/2014 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The threat of monsoon (click here) thunderstorms becomes a major concern for the 412th Operations Support Squadron Weather Flight in the summer months. During this period, the wind flow in Southern California can shift to a southeast to southerly directional flow. This flow brings tropical moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico or the Pacific Ocean, near Baja, into Southern California. This tropical moisture combined with our intense desert heat and mountainous terrain, aid in producing scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorm activity across the Antelope Valley.

When monsoon thunderstorm activity is forecasted to occur, the 25th Operational Weather Squadron will issue weather watches and warnings for Edwards. The squadron is based out of Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., and is responsible for the Western United States....
