A double recessive allele. If Zebras didn't have a recessive white allele they would not have white stripes. In this case, the zebra inherited a double recessive and was born an albino, blue eyes and all.

Why the zebra?

Diversity. It is the way species survive and when it is limited a species has a higher chance of extinction, except of course, for the effects of humans.
