When the reactor melted down in April 1986 during a test gone awry, a radioactive cloud covered much of the continent. Ukraine was then part of the Soviet Union....
There is no reason for Russia to use Chernobyl as a leverage point with the Russian people to invade Ukraine. The IAEA has been overseeing the site since it occurred. I doubt the Russian military asked for clearance from the IAEA. International employees could be in the area.
The world is in trouble with this invasion. This is not a minor invasion, it is an enormous invasion with intentions to take control of major cities. Ukrainians weren't packing to leave in many instances. They were purchasing guns and munition to protect themselves and their homes from zealot Russian troops.
Putin is using ethnicity to divide the people. That means average people can be taken prisoner, tried and executed for no other reason but their ethnic heritage. They will be characterized as sympathizers to those Russia currently hate for whatever reason Czar Putin has decided to hate.
I remind, Putin has been closing off Russian society from the outside world including cyber. It is no wonder to realize why other countries are under cyber attack. It is to have them deal with chaos within their borders rather than reaching out to Russians. I remind, the FBI had absolutely no trouble walking right into Russia's intelligence cyber network and finding all the evidence it wanted during the 2016 election investigation with Former Director of the FBI, Robert Mueller. So, for Russian agencies to be on the attack is their form of support for Putin's propaganda.
Russian isolation is a strong image to realize that a portion of American society is still isolated by the Trump network intrusions into American life. Trump was mentored. There is no doubt about it. The Trump administration chronically compromised USA security as often as it could and to the greatest extent it could. Why? Trump's personal wealth and power is why.
