Antarctica (click on to animate) Thank you.
June 5, 2006. 6:00 PM. Not very different from last week. The peninsula still has the highest temperatures but less of it is above freezing. It's just that it is far less optimistic that the ice shelves will return any time soon. As long as they are compromised the terraces won't regenerate and the standing ice itself can be undermined with direct contact with the warmer air surrounding the continent. This time of year the very coldest temperatures see little sunlight and are the extremist points south on Earth.

The coldest is spot on Antarctica today is Vostok, the Russian Base in Antarctica. I don't know when I have seen that station down and it has the roughest conditions of any. It is always subzero. The elevation indicates it is over 2 miles above sea level on the Blue Ice. Tough terrain.
