Storm Cleanup Continues In Jasper County (video)

UNISYS Enhanced Infrared Satellite as the 'Heat Transfer Vortex,' which caused the storm, moves out of the Midwest.
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Jasper County residents have a lot of work to do after a tornado ripped through Sunday night.
The storm didn't just touch down near Sully. It covered about 20 miles of Jasper County.
Initial reports show it stayed on the ground for 25 minutes.
The tornado touched down about 4 four miles south of Sully near Co-Line manufacturing. The company makes car parts and basketball hoops.
One hundred mile mph winds took out the company's walls and sent sheet metal flying.
The fire chief talked about where the flying sheet metal ended up.
"(A) lot of it wrapped around (the) owner's house. There's insulation half a mile north of here that I assume is from here out in the field," said Fire Chief Mike Vandermolen.
No one was in the building when the tornado hit.
Power was knocked out to 800 people in the area for more than three hours.
The tornado also damaged several homes, and at least three barns and a machine shed were destroyed.

...Complicating the picture, the striking Arctic change was as much a result of ice moving as melting, many say. A new study, led by Son Nghiem at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and appearing this week in Geophysical Research Letters, used satellites and buoys to show that winds since 2000 had pushed huge amounts of thick old ice out of the Arctic basin past Greenland. The thin floes that formed on the resulting open water melted quicker or could be shuffled together by winds and similarly expelled, the authors said.
The pace of change has far exceeded what had been estimated by almost all the simulations used to envision how the Arctic will respond to rising concentrations of greenhouse gases linked to global warming. But that disconnect can cut two ways. Are the models overly conservative? Or are they missing natural influences that can cause wide swings in ice and temperature, thereby dwarfing the slow background warming?...

...But he knows the retreating sea ice creates opportunities for Foss Maritime Co. in Arctic regions, and like other regional companies, Foss is seeking to develop them. McElroy is particularly interested in new petroleum resources that may become accessible if there's more open water off the North Slope of Alaska in the summer.
"The oil development stuff, if it's offshore and onshore, requires tug and barge work and support activities, and that's definitely of interest to Foss," he said. "We're watching that closely."
Others are watching the trend, too. A more accessible Arctic could have broad impact on the Puget Sound economy, spurring demand for supply work and possibly opening new polar shipping routes for cargo....

Arctic ice island breaks in half - I promise you this; with billions of people on Earth; if this isn't taken seriously we'll all be sorry.
SEA ICE and the Arctic Ocean are literally the 'ice cubes' to keeping Earth's oceans cool. Watching the Arctic Ocean disappear isn't the same as watching Polar Bears become endangered. The Arctic Ocean is a vital geological huge piece of ice. It is the 'rock' (Ice is considered a geological rock.) the Polar Bears live on. These are serious circumstances the populous of Earth are facing. It's not a matter of placing the Arctic Ocean on an endangered species list. This is very dangerous climate change.
This ice block was completely intact in May and now it has split in half. Ice is ice. It melts at 0 degrees C. There is a very real reason why Earth's icefields are disappearing. It's because the heat transfer systems are fueled with vortices which are ionic in nature. Ever since the vortices showed up on October 4, 2002; the acceleration to the ice melt of Earth has accelerated exponentially. I have been writing about this for years. YEARS. Where has everyone been, chasing the 'best economic strategy' that Human Induced Global Warming can bring? Trading danger for dollars isn't what I call sane. It just isn't.

In a season of record summer melting in the region, the two chunks have moved rapidly through the water - one of them covering 98km (61 miles) in a week.
Their progress has been tracked amid fears they could edge west towards oil and gas installations off Alaska.
The original Manhattan-sized berg (16km by five km; 10 miles by three miles) broke off the Ayles Ice Shelf in 2005.

I joined a team that landed on the ice island in May to carry out the first scientific investigation into what many see as a key indicator of global warming.
It is an unsettling thought that the very ice we landed on - and filmed on - for several hours has since ripped apart.
One of the scientists on that mission was Luke Copland of the University of Ottawa, and he told BBC News that the fact that the island had headed south was significant.
"The island became more vulnerable to breaking up with the warmer temperatures in more southerly latitudes, together with having less protection from the smaller amounts of surrounding sea-ice.
"It's relatively unusual for the ice island to drift so far south so quickly - many ice islands in the past have stayed within the Arctic Ocean, or within the northern parts of the Queen Elizabeth Islands."
Dr Copland said that the island had travelled so far south because of the small extent of Arctic ice this summer, influenced in turn by warmer conditions.
"The low sea-ice conditions this year have played a role. The sea-ice normally blocks ice inflow into the Queen Elizabeth Islands, but with less ice this year it has made it easier for the Ice Island to make its way in."
And his conclusion is clear: unlike ice islands which in the past might have lasted in the Arctic Ocean for 50 years or more, this one is destined to be shorter-lived.
"Ultimately, the ice island should break up faster because of the warmer temperatures - I'd be surprised if it lasted more than a decade or so."

Arctic sea-ice shrank to the smallest area on record this year, as measured by satellite.
The US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said the minimum extent of 4.13 million sq km (1.59 million sq miles) was reached on 16 September.
The figure shattered all previous satellite surveys, including the previous record low of 5.32 million sq km measured in 2005.
