Can you guess what this is? No? The decline in numbers of Chinook Salmon off the West Coast of the USA from OVERFISHING.

Chinook Salmon

The graph is from 1962 to 1996. Well guess what? The fishery has finally collapsed due to the exploitive Republican agenda. I guess we don't need government spending to maintain and improve our fisheries, now do we?

(click at title to entry)....Seasons for northern Oregon and Washington options are drastically more limited than usual. The Council will select a final option at their next meeting in Seattle, Washington on April 6-12.
"The status of Sacramento fall Chinook has suddenly collapsed to an unprecedented low level," said Donald Hansen, Chairman of the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC). "The effect on California and Oregon salmon fisheries is a disaster by any definition."
Perhaps in anticipation of the Pacific Fishery Management Council's recommendations, the sport salmon season south of Cape Falcon (between Tillamook and Seaside) scheduled for March 15 through April 30 has been closed....

...Las Vegas-based Arctic Oil & Gas has raised eyebrows around the world with its roll-of-the-dice bid to lock up exclusive rights to extract oil and gas from rapidly melting areas of the central Arctic Ocean, currently beyond the territorial control of Canada, Russia and other polar nations....

Arctic Ice, Glaciers Feeling The Heat From Global Warming (click at title of entry)

Washington (dbTechno) - According to scientists, it appears that Arctic ice and glaciers are really feeling the heat from global warming. They have discovered that there is a great deal of accelerated melting of glaciers, as well as the Arctic ocean ice.
NASA scientists have discovered that the Arctic ice, which is usually thick throughout the Arctic summer, has grown much thinner this year than ever before.
The scientists stated that in some parts it is already melting, before the winter even officially ends. Ice that is over two-years-old, perennial ice, now makes up only 30% of the Arctic ice, down from 60% 20 years ago.
It was reported that this ice is not likely to return either, with another major melt expected this summer.
This comes as scientists at the World Glacier Monitoring Service revealed that 30 major glaciers in the world are melting at a rapid pace. The researchers, from the
University of Zurich in Switzerland, stated that the melting could lead to severe floods, and a decreased water supply.
The report on the glaciers is that the average rate of melting and thinning has more than doubled between 2004 and 2006. They looked at glaciers in Alaska, Antarctica, the Himalayas, and other areas of the world.
NASA scientists told reporters that the thicker perennial ice that is melting is scary, as it usually stays year after year without much decline.
Ice is st ill present, but it is all extremely thin and melting fast.

USGS Real-Time Water Data for Arkansas

USGS Crews Work To Measure Flood (click here)
The U.S. Geological Survey has 140 locations here in Arkansas. They've been working to gauge the water levels in Arkansas streams and rivers for the past 48 hours.
The data they get will help determine what areas need to be evacuated and what changes need to be made in the future.
A Batesville resident says, “I have been here 15 years and it's never been this bad."
Long before sightseers came out to look at the devastation, USGS crews were out measuring the rivers.
Water Hydrologist Jaysson Funkhouser says, “When floods occur if they get high enough like what we've seen the past few days we'll dispatch crews to fix any broken equipment, make water measurements and verify the peaks that we're monitoring are actually accurate.”
Funkhouser says the USGS doesn't make flooding predictions, but they relay their data to the National Weather Service and Corps of Engineers which than make decisions on evacuations and road closings.
He adds, “For example the Spring River at hardy they actually used the data from one of our gauges right there at the town of hardy to issue a flood warning and the town actually evacuated numerous homes and residence based on that data from the USGS stream station."
Last time the Spring River flooded it was five feet lower than this week's recent flood. It also killed two people. Funkhouser hopes the new equipment is saving lives.
(The reason it was five feet lower is because it wasn't as saturated as it is today.)
The USGS website shows flooding and current water conditions across the state. The black triangles represent real time floods in addition to the flood stage and amount of rain fall.

Real-time data typically are recorded at 15-60 minute intervals, stored onsite, and then transmitted to USGS offices every 1 to 4 hours, depending on the data relay technique used. Recording and transmission times may be more frequent during critical events. Data from real-time sites are relayed to USGS offices via satellite, telephone, and/or radio and are available for viewing within minutes of arrival. (click at link to entry)

08/19/07 Minnesota Flooding Wabasha Winona Fillmore Counties

See, once the sun went south the freezing set in so the flooding didn't occur. Everyone thought it was the greatest winter wonderland they could find.

Americans in the society as it exists under a stupid Republican president simply exudes the same stupid 'live in the moment' attributes. There is no 'intellectual' challenges to the American people. There is so much 'spin' in their media they keep getting 'turned around' when science actually presents itself. The media to the American people is worthless as far as I am concerned. Its propaganda, not information.

Fatal flooding kills 13 in central US

And it wasn't like people didn't know it was coming. This article is from February 28th. But, hey, who needs to warn anyone, it might actually cost the government money to warn folks ahead of time, but, keep lowering those taxes, who cares about 'livin' through it.'

I swear Republicans are the most stupid people I've ever met. They rather deprive themselves of collective government 'that actually works' with people competent to do it, than live through disasters.

If the USA government had a comprehensive policy to stop the polluting of carbon dioxide, this wouldn't even be happening.

Part of the problem with the USA's Republicans is that they don't know what it is to have 'competent' government so much as those that 'dress up nice' on Sunday morning !

Experts warn that melting snow could contribute to major flooding this springDubuque's sixth-snowiest (and counting) winter could leave more than just lingering memories of snow shoveling. Melting snow could trigger widespread floods this spring. "The chances of flooding this year on the Mississippi are the highest they have been in several years," said Jeff Zogg, hydrologist with the Quad Cities office of the National Weather Service. Dubuque's chances of experiencing both moderate (55 percent) and major (25 percent) Mississippi River flooding are the highest since 2001, Zogg said, when Dubuque recorded its second-highest crest at the railroad bridge -- 25.4 feet on April 21, 2001. Flood stage is 17 feet at the bridge. Spring river flooding requires several ingredients, including the size and rate of the melting snow pack, river levels, soil moisture, frost depth and the amount of rainfall occurring as the snow melts. The 2001 flooding occurred thanks to all those factors combining, including a then-record-depth snow pack melting quickly because of two storm systems. So...[viewing 1013 of 4231 characters]

There is no place for water to go anymore but 'up.' The central corridor of the USA has been receiving all the moisture off the Gulf now for the last two years while the rest of the country is experiencing drought. This is the result. The land is so saturated that the Mississippi and it's tributaries may be expanding their banks. Water flows downhill so what started in Ohio is ending in the southern USA.

Heavy flooding has killed at least 13 people in central states of the United States and caused many residents to evacuate their homes.
Five deaths were linked to the flooding in Missouri, five people were killed in a highway wreck in heavy rain in Kentucky and a 65-year-old woman in Ohio.
Flooding was also reported in large areas of Arkansas and parts of southern Illinois, southern Indiana, southwestern Ohio, and Atlanta and schools were closed in parts of western Kentucky because of flooded roads.
The National Weather Service posted flood and flash flood warnings from Texas to Pennsylvania.

The Spring Equinox arrived with Fury to the USA on on March 20, 2008 at 0548 UTC

Although this photo shows a lot of 'green' that does not mean the river is contained, quite the contrary, it is well over it's banks and every bit of land noted in the photo below is under water. Saturation, the area has been receiving flooding for two years now and considering it started with the arrival of Katrina, there is no place for the water to go except over its banks.
