I am the People, the Mob

I am the people--the mob--the crowd--the mass.Do you know that all the great work of the world is done through me?I am the workingman, the inventor, the maker of the world's food andclothes.I am the audience that witnesses history. The Napoleons come from meand the Lincolns. They die. And then I send forth more Napoleonsand Lincolns.I am the seed ground. I am a prairie that will stand for much plowing.Terrible storms pass over me. I forget. The best of me is sucked outand wasted. I forget. Everything but Death comes to me and makesme work and give up what I have. And I forget.Sometimes I growl, shake myself and spatter a few red drops for historyto remember. Then--I forget. When I, the People, learn to remember, when I, the People, use thelessons of yesterday and no longer forget who robbed me last year, who played me for a fool--then there will be no speaker in all theworld say the name: "The People," with any fleck of a sneer in hisvoice or any far-off smile of derision. The mob--the crowd--the mass--will arrive then.

THE PEOPLE OF THE AREA WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FISH FOR A LONG TIME. The oceans are polluted with corpus that will never be retrieved. It will be awhile before the seas are clear again. It will be still longer before anyone can trust the quality of the fish for food.

The people of these islands desperate for a return to life might return to their old habits but considering the extent there is disease being found in Sumatra and the high potential for contaminated sealife it probably is ill advised until the fish as a food source can be tested. Would Americans jump right back in to contaminated waters? No.

Wednesday, January 05, 2005 2:18 p.m. ET
COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (Reuters) - President Bush, who called on Americans this week to make a donation to help victims of the Asian tsunami, has contributed $10,000 himself, the White House said on Wednesday.
Bush, whose wealth is estimated at some $13 million, on Monday asked "every American to contribute as they are able to do so."

THIS IS BIZARRE TO THINK ABOUT. It is unrealistic with Climate Change that any Insurance Estimation is Accurate. We are in uncharted territory. There have never been weather systems as dictated by Human Induced Global Warming. If the Earthquakes aren't due to deadly weather patterns, which I am not willing to say yet and will elaborate on later, then the impact of this tsunami was make worse by the fact the coral reefs are degraded due to warmer oceans and abuses of humans. The islands could have received a diminished impact if Earth was healthy.

The Tsunami Risks Project

This website, the result of the Tsunami Risks project, seeks to introduce the insurance industry to the complexity of tsunami and the wide range of phenomena that can cause them, and to explore the implications for estimation of tsunami hazards, frequency-magnitude distributions and evaluations of the direct and indirect insurance risks that they present.

The Republicans' comfortable majority in the Senate means that Alberto R. Gonzales will almost certainly be confirmed as the next attorney general. With hearings on his nomination set to start today, many Democrats think the best they can do is wound Gonzales enough with questions about his notorious torture memos to disqualify him for any future Supreme Court seat. In the end, however, they will feel pressure to support him or face retaliation from Republicans.

Military Doctor Closes Online War Diary

Wed Jan 5,12:30 PM
PHILADELPHIA - A military doctor whose Web site chronicled the bloody aftermath of the suicide bombing of a mess tent in Iraq (
news - web sites) has shut down the site after being told his postings violated Army regulations.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=20&u=/ap/20050105/ap_on_re_us/doctor_s_war_diary

Keeping in mind, Louisiana is one of the poorest states in the country, the reasons this soldier loved being a soldier SOUNDS A BIT JIHADISH TO ME. We don't belong in Iraq. We never did. Sorry Craig is dead. He shouldn't be. There faith should be a solace not a commitment.

Fallen soldier remembered as faithful trooper
Sgt. Craig Nelson's patriotism will linger in memory of friends, family

...But he was also the son of a forthright Christian and patriotic family, whose father had served in the U.S. Air Force, and who knew from the time he was old enough to walk that he wanted to be a soldier.

IRAQ WAS NEVER A THREAT TO THE USE. This type of patriotism is highly admirable. However, it is easily used by men of power so have other agendas!

..."He loved his country and wanted nothing from it -- he just wanted to serve it." Henry said. "Craig believed in this war -- he believed that by doing his part it would make a difference. He believed that by him being over here the people of the United States would be a lot safer, and he believed it with all his heart."

..."He was a genuine, all-American kid who was mischievous at times, but I couldn't ever get mad at him," said Ken Gaspard, principal during Nelson's last two years at Airline, from which Nelson graduated in 2002. "He had that little smile. It was very difficult to punish him because he was a likable kid."

"Like it says in the Bible, there's no truer friend than the one willing to lay down his life for you, and Craig was willing to do it for any one of his friends."

These memories are a comfort for his mother, who plans to remain active in the family readiness group of her son's company.
"I'm not bitter, I'm not angry," his mother said. "Craig was doing what he wanted to do."
His death, back home close to those he loved, in the presence of his loved ones, may have been a blessing in its own way, she said.
"Craig didn't want to live in that condition," his mother said.
The family's firm conviction that Craig is now with his creator is inspirational to their minister, the Rev. Harrell Shelton, associate pastor of Airline Baptist Church in Bossier City. He feels it may be a sign that God has a greater plan for the family, to be of comfort to other unit families in months to come.

"These have been phenomenal people," Shelton said. "Here's a test of what Christian faith is -- to lose a child is one of the toughest things you can imagine."

"We have already cried a river of tears," Lois Nelson said. "We're going to miss Craig -- he was such as sweet boy. We hope everyone will pray for us, and pray for the boys still over there."

MY ESTIMATION OF IRAQ now. Is that the rebels are being effective. Their pattern clearly indicates they are closing in on the Green Zone. One day the Exiles will find themselves at the airport with the two mile runway looking for a safe haven somewhere else while American troops hold the perimeter.

Dozens killed in Iraqi violence

Ramadi has been the scene of frequent clashes
At least 25 people have been killed in Iraq in the latest series of attacks by insurgents.
A car bomb outside a police academy killed at least 15 people during a graduation ceremony in Hilla, south of Baghdad, on Wednesday.

Stains of Guantanamo are there for all to see

By George S. Hishmeh, Special to Gulf News
A can of worms was opened, probably coincidentally, soon after five Washington-based journalists reporting for the Arab media visited a military detention centre at the American naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, early last month.

… These two shameful developments have immeasurably hurt American image in the Muslim and Arab world, probably beyond immediate repair. The base in Cuba, for long a sleepy refuelling naval station, acquired a high-tech military detention centre soon after the Afghan War, which was precipitated by the horrendous September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington DC.

Uncertain economic prospects ahead

The world's economic outlook for 2005 is uncertain at best. Pessimists may worry about worst-case scenarios, but economic disasters, unlike natural disasters, can be prevented through better planning and management. Much depends on how major economic powers -- particularly the United States, Europe, Japan and China -- handle domestic and international problems in the year ahead.

He was reacting to reports, first carried by the New Straits Times, that there was panic in Semporna and some other coastal districts on the east coast that a tsunami was approaching and that parts of the Philippines had already been devastated.

We humbly thank you

It has been obvious from the beginning that the devastation caused by the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami was simply too enormous for Indonesia to deal with alone. The huge death toll, the massive destruction and the hundreds of thousands of people now forced to live in refugee camps are simply unprecedented.

http://www.thejakartapost.com/detaileditorial.asp?fileid=20050106.E01&irec=0

Incompetence the real killer

With Indonesia bearing the brunt of the death and destruction wrought by the Indian Ocean tsunami, it is instructive to ask whether this was entirely because of its proximity to the earthquake's epicenter. The answer, it seems, is a resounding "no".

Indeed, it is not too early now to start planning the reconstruction of the province of Nangroe Aceh Darussalam so that life can resume as normally as the circumstances there permit. A number of aspects, however, should be taken into serious consideration.

Anti-Defamation League Criticizes Vatican Newspaper Report On Tsunami

Gary Fitleberg, December 30, 2004

The Anti-Defamation League criticized a Vatican newspaper for falsely claiming Israel had denied relief to Sri Lanka after this week’s tsunami.
The ADL noted that contrary to the report in L’Osservatore Romano, Sri Lankan officials had rejected Israel’s offer to provide a large team to help with search-and-rescue efforts because it contained Israeli military personnel, though it had agreed to a smaller team.
"This is a case of wishing to believe the worst about Israel, whether or not it is true," the ADL’s national director, Abraham Foxman, said in a statement. Sri Lankan officials reportedly had worried that the Israeli military component to the relief could anger Muslim residents.
