BROWN: Michael Moore is with us. Nice to see you, sir.
MICHAEL MOORE, FILMMAKER/AUTHOR: Good to see you.
BROWN: Another fine mess you've gotten us into, or they've gotten you into. Don't tell me what you think or what you suspect, but tell me what you know about why Disney is withholding the film.
MOORE: What I know is, is that Michael Eisner went and had a meeting with my agent, Ari Emanuel at Endeavor, and told him at this meeting that there is no way he will allow Miramax to distribute Michael Moore's film, because, in doing so, it will anger Jeb Bush and put Disney at risk in Florida. They were up for millions of dollars of task abatements, tax incentives, whatever.
BROWN: They deny -- they don't deny the meeting, obviously, with the agent. They deny that they said that. No doubt in your mind that was said?
MOORE: No, no doubt at all.
BROWN: OK.
MOORE: Oh, absolutely not. In fact, I got a phone call immediately after the meeting. I was told this. And we decided, along with Miramax, to do our best to try and convince Disney to do the right thing. And we have spent months trying to do that. We have been very quiet about this.
BROWN: This has gone on pretty much a year, hasn't it?
MOORE: Yes, that's right.
BROWN: Why not a year ago just go find another way to get the movie out there?
MOORE: Because a year ago, we were already making the film. We already had a deal. We had a contract with Miramax to distribute the film. And this happened all after we did this deal. And Miramax felt very confident that Disney, once they saw the film, would distribute it.
BROWN: Let me argue the Disney side for a second.
MOORE: Yes, sure.
BROWN: They're a private company. They have private interests. Do they not have every right in the world, for whatever reasons they so choose, to distribute what they want to distribute and not distribute what they don't?
MOORE: Well, they're a public company.
BROWN: A public -- they are absolutely a public company.
MOORE: Not a private company. And they do. They do have that right. But, Aaron, we live in a country now where the control of our media is in fewer and fewer hands. We're down to just a few studios now. If the few remaining studios decide that dissenting voices shouldn't be heard, that we don't have to provide all the information to the people, just some of the information, are we better off as a society, as a free, open, democratic society? I don't think so.
BROWN: Listen, I will never argue that. Of course not. I'm one of those who says get it all out there, all of it out there, your films, their films, anybody's films.
MOORE: Right.
BROWN: Figure out a way to get it out there. And when all is said and done, will this get out there, this movie?
MOORE: Well, I hope so.
BROWN: Do you doubt it will get out there?
MOORE: I don't doubt it because I know -- I made this film. I believe in this. This film is so great, it has already has been accepted by the Cannes Film Festival. It's tested through the roof when we've shown it to audiences across the country. This film will be seen because I'll make sure it is seen.
BROWN: I don't understand the business that well. But you to need a major distributor do this? Is this something -- you obviously can't go theater to theater with a DVD and stick it in there.
MOORE: Well, I would do that. I'll stick it in the back of the van and drive it around the country if I have to. I don't think I'm going to have to do that. Ever since the news broke this morning, there has been quite a bit of interest.
BROWN: Funny how that happens.
MOORE: In the film. So I think we're going to be OK. We're in good hands with Miramax. And they've stuck behind us with this. And it is just -- it is disappointing that Disney doesn't want people to see this. There are no bad things in it. There is no sex and violence. It is just some truth about what is happening to this country and, you know, it is my way of looking at it.
BROWN: It is -- on days when we agree and on days when we don't, it's always nice to see you.
MOORE: Thank you. Which day is this, by the way?
BROWN: This is somewhere in between.

1867, Cy Young born, American baseball player, whose memory inspired an award for the best major-league pitcher. He was born Denton True Young in Gilmore, Ohio. In 1890, after playing for the Canton, Ohio, team of the Tri-State League, he became a pitcher with the Cleveland club, then in the National League. Leaving the Cleveland team in 1898, he played for the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League (1899-1900) and the Boston Red Sox of the American League (1901-1908). On May 5, 1904, Young became the first American League player to pitch a perfect game, that is, to allow no batters to reach first base. He retired from baseball in 1911, after playing two seasons for the Cleveland Indians of the American League and part of a season for the Boston Braves of the National League. During his 22 years in the major leagues Young pitched three no-hit games. He pitched in 906 games and won 511, the latter figure a major league record. In 1937 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In his honor, the Cy Young Award for the best major league pitcher of the year was established in 1956; since 1967 the award has been given to the best pitcher in each league.

Editorial First Amendment Cases Rulings blow a chill wind
Can the government jail journalists for seeking to inform the public about government? Should a governor get to bar state employees from talking to reporters he doesn't like?
Last week, federal judges said yes to both propositions.
Both rulings risk damage to the tradition of an independent press offering hard-nosed coverage of those in power. It's not just people who make a living as journalists who should be alarmed. It's anyone who doesn't want to let mayors, governors, senators, bureaucrats or presidents do whatever they want without fear of exposure and criticism.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's plan seems to be coming together. As predicted, with just over five weeks to go to the March 31 parliamentary elections, he is starting to make concessions to international demands for a fair contest.
Just enough, he hopes, to win him international approval without really threatening the outcome.
In January the Southern African Development Community (SADC) decided to send a legal team to Zimbabwe to assess, in good time, whether its electoral laws were consistent with the electoral guidelines SADC leaders adopted last year.

TEHRAN: An Iranian journalist has been jailed for 14 years on charges ranging from espionage to insulting the country's leaders in an unusually heavy sentence in Iran, where tens of journalists have been tried in recent years.
Rights activists said on Tuesday that Arash Sigarchi, 28, was convicted by the Revolutionary Court in the Caspian province of Gilan in northern Iran.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 March 2005: - - Monday night's earthquake struck about 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Nias, off Indonesia's Sumatra coast. It came about three months after a 9.0-magnitude quake struck a point further northwest along the Sumatra coast, spawning a tsunami that killed more than 126,000 Indonesians and leaving almost as many missing.
The latest quake didn't generate killer waves, but Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla said it may have killed up to 2,000 people on Nias. However, a Cabinet minister later said initial reports from the island indicated that between 100 and 200 had perished.
At least 340 people died on Nias in the earlier disaster and 10,000 were left homeless there among its population of about 500,000.
Dave Jenkins, a New Zealand doctor and surfer who heads a relief organization, said he didn't believe many foreign surfers were likely on Nias at the time of the latest earthquake, but he didn't elaborate.
His group, SurfAid International, has been working in hard-to-reach Nias and surrounding islands since 2000, educating people about malaria and treating malnourished children.
The group used its knowledge of the area and government contacts to reach the islands quickly after the December tragedy. Jenkins said Tuesday a boat was being stocked to go to the Banyak Islands to treat victims from the latest quake in areas only accessible by water.
"We've got the boat and we had a huge kit we haven't used from the (World Health Organization) that's big enough to treat 10,000 people for three months _ that's the total population of the Banyaks," Jenkins said. "We're sending two doctors and two nurses, and I'll get up there myself."

THE crucial closed-circuit TV footage showing the moment when former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri died has at last been made public, casting increasing doubt on the official version of the assassination.
The pictures, screened on the al-Arabiya satellite network and recorded 40 days ago, show a white truck, presumed to be the vehicle used by Hariri's killers, driving from the scene just as his motorcade approaches.

NEW DELHI (AP): Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday offered US$2 million (euro1.54 million) in aid to Indonesia, where a magnitude-8.7 quake has killed hundreds.
Monday's quake off the western coast of Sumatra island -- almost three months after a massive quake triggered the Dec. 26 tsunami -- sparked panic across the Indian Ocean region. Indian officials had evacuated thousands of people along the southern coast, but killer waves never materialized.
"The prime minister has issued instructions for immediate release of 2 million dollars to Indonesia for earthquake relief," said Sanjaya Baru, Singh's spokesman. He didn't give other details.
Indonesian officials said at least 330 bodies have been found on the remote island of Nias, which bore the brunt of the quake. They said the death toll was expected to climb. (*)

The kidnapping and murder of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford has raised new concerns over how to track the more than 30,000 registered sex offenders and predators living in Florida.

One month before a registered sexual offender allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, Florida law enforcement agencies had lost track of at least 1,800 other sexual offenders statewide, according to a review of Florida's Sexual Offender/Predator Registry.
John Evander Couey, the man who would confess to killing Jessica, was not even listed as one of them because no one knew he wasn't living at his reported address and was staying near the Lunsfords.

JAKARTA (AFP) - A powerful earthquake of measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia's tsunami-devasted Sumatra island, causing major panic and power blackouts, officials and reports said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from the quake which was felt in Malaysia, officials said, pinpointing the epicentre off the coast of the southern coast of the island.
However, the Japanese Kyodo news service said the quake had triggered a tsunami warning,
Suharjono, the head of earthquake division of Indonesia's Meteological and Geophysics agency, told SCTV television station that the tremor struck between the offshore isles of Nias and Simeuleu, 33 kilometres under the sea.
The quake was close to the epicentre of a magnitude-9.0 seismic thrust which struck on December 26, throwing up a tsunami that killed more than 273,000 people around the Indian Ocean.
It was felt in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, where guests and residents evacuated high-rise hotels and apartments, an AFP correspondent said.
Tremors were also felt in Padang, the capital of neighbouring Sumatra province, where it downed powerlines, according to local Metro TV. No telephone contact was immediately possible with Padang or another major city, Medan.

Rodney Burrell, 17, was charged Monday with murder in connection with the March 20 shooting death of 33-year-old Keith Owen Kelly.

Burrell is described as being about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 160 pounds.

In response to Nicolas Kristof's article on Hillary Clinton and abortion, I would point out that her position has been consistent all along. Abortion should be safe, legal and rare. To that end, the Clinton administration supported reality-based sex education and expanded access to contraception and family planning. This is consistent with every other industrialized country and has led to fewer unwanted pregnancies, which means fewer abortions.

(CLAYTON) -- Mourners will gather for funeral services Tuesday morning in Clayton for a teenager strangled to death in Johnston County last week.
Services for Melissa Mayer, 16, will get underway at 11 a.m. at the Baptist Center Church.
Her stepfather, Ashley Reagan, Jr., 34, is now facing charges for her murder. He's in the Johnston County Jail.

MUMBAI, MARCH 28: The Indian lenders to the Dabhol project will have one more meeting with GE-Bechtel for the settlement of the latter’s non-debt claims of $420 million. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday in London.
Institutional sources told FE, “the Indian lenders, led by IDBI’s executive director Jatinder Balakrishnan, will make another attempt to arrive at an agreement with GE-Bechtel for the settlement of non-debt claims. So far there has not been any pact as the March 18 meeting held at Washington failed to make any headways. Even the meeting held earlier in January in New York had failed.

Equitas $415m to settle asbestos case

Equitas, the reinsurer, which assumed asbestos and environmental liabilities that once threatened to overwhelm Lloyd's of London, will today announce it has sealed its third biggest claims settlement.
Equitas has agreed to pay $415m (£222m) to settle claims arising through Babcock & Wilson, the engineering group currently in chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The settlement deals with the largest remaining set of asbestos liabilities on Equitas's books but is subject to final confirmation of B&W's reorganisation plan that will see the company emerging from bankruptcy.

Last week, federal judges said yes to both propositions.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 March 2005: - - Monday night's earthquake struck about 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Nias, off Indonesia's Sumatra coast. It came about three months after a 9.0-magnitude quake struck a point further northwest along the Sumatra coast, spawning a tsunami that killed more than 126,000 Indonesians and leaving almost as many missing.
The latest quake didn't generate killer waves, but Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla said it may have killed up to 2,000 people on Nias. However, a Cabinet minister later said initial reports from the island indicated that between 100 and 200 had perished.
At least 340 people died on Nias in the earlier disaster and 10,000 were left homeless there among its population of about 500,000.
Dave Jenkins, a New Zealand doctor and surfer who heads a relief organization, said he didn't believe many foreign surfers were likely on Nias at the time of the latest earthquake, but he didn't elaborate.
His group, SurfAid International, has been working in hard-to-reach Nias and surrounding islands since 2000, educating people about malaria and treating malnourished children.
The group used its knowledge of the area and government contacts to reach the islands quickly after the December tragedy. Jenkins said Tuesday a boat was being stocked to go to the Banyak Islands to treat victims from the latest quake in areas only accessible by water.
"We've got the boat and we had a huge kit we haven't used from the (World Health Organization) that's big enough to treat 10,000 people for three months _ that's the total population of the Banyaks," Jenkins said. "We're sending two doctors and two nurses, and I'll get up there myself."

The kidnapping and murder of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford has raised new concerns over how to track the more than 30,000 registered sex offenders and predators living in Florida.

One month before a registered sexual offender allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, Florida law enforcement agencies had lost track of at least 1,800 other sexual offenders statewide, according to a review of Florida's Sexual Offender/Predator Registry.
John Evander Couey, the man who would confess to killing Jessica, was not even listed as one of them because no one knew he wasn't living at his reported address and was staying near the Lunsfords.

Louis Jourdain, a student at Red Lake High School, was arrested as part of an investigation into a potentially wider plot, a law enforcement source on Monday told The Associated Press, on condition of anonymity. The source said Jourdain had been arrested Sunday.

JAKARTA (AFP) - A powerful earthquake of measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia's tsunami-devasted Sumatra island, causing major panic and power blackouts, officials and reports said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from the quake which was felt in Malaysia, officials said, pinpointing the epicentre off the coast of the southern coast of the island.
However, the Japanese Kyodo news service said the quake had triggered a tsunami warning,
Suharjono, the head of earthquake division of Indonesia's Meteological and Geophysics agency, told SCTV television station that the tremor struck between the offshore isles of Nias and Simeuleu, 33 kilometres under the sea.
The quake was close to the epicentre of a magnitude-9.0 seismic thrust which struck on December 26, throwing up a tsunami that killed more than 273,000 people around the Indian Ocean.
It was felt in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, where guests and residents evacuated high-rise hotels and apartments, an AFP correspondent said.
Tremors were also felt in Padang, the capital of neighbouring Sumatra province, where it downed powerlines, according to local Metro TV. No telephone contact was immediately possible with Padang or another major city, Medan.

Rodney Burrell, 17, was charged Monday with murder in connection with the March 20 shooting death of 33-year-old Keith Owen Kelly.
Kelly's body was found lying in the 800 block of East Martin Street shortly before midnight on March 20, and he was later pronounced dead at WakeMed.
Burrell is described as being about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 160 pounds.

OSAKA — The Osaka District Court ordered Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd on Monday to pay 63 million yen in compensation to four current and former female employees who suffered sexual discrimination in wages and promotions.
The ruling was handed down nine and a half years after a total of nine female employees sued Sumitomo Metal Industries, Sumitomo Chemical Co and Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd in August 1995. This was the first ruling among the three cases that went in favor of the employees. (Kyodo News)

A trio of Lincoln County landowners contends in the lawsuit that the county has violated the federal Fair Housing Act by unfairly limiting the development of affordable homes and housing, particularly in north Lincoln County.
By limiting affordable housing options -- specifically because the county requires large lots for new home construction -- Lincoln County officials are discriminating against people because of their race, color, national origin or disabilities in violation of federal law, the lawsuit contends.

Bigotry continues; only targets change
They just aren’t like us. They can’t be trusted. They have no moral values. They are an insult to God. They could be tolerated if they kept out of sight, but they shouldn’t have children. If we were meant to mix, God wouldn’t have made us different. They are unpleasant to look at. They didn’t work and sweat to build this country.
Who are “they”? Whites, blacks, Jews, homosexuals, mixed-race couples, Catholics, Italians, Irish, Asians or perhaps you. Over the years these indictments of “them” have been used against one group after another. As time passes “they” changes with each new pronouncement by those who have the most recent, clearest understanding of God’s message. The moral outrage aimed at each newly designated “they” is surpassed only by the next message from those chosen few who interpret God’s intentions so loudly.
Bile-filled hypocrites preach intimidation and threats of doom if “they” are not eliminated, denied the rights of citizenship or in some way isolated from polite society. If these views are given continued credence, shame on us.

Don’t teach children tolerance of gays
Recently, there has been a debate about teaching tolerance of homosexuality to children. There are PBS shows under fire for promoting tolerance to the gay lifestyle, some geared to young children. I appreciate the stand that Education Secretary Margaret Spellings took regarding exposing young children to the gay lifestyle. She is right to question the wisdom of this kind of children’s programming.
My suggestion to tolerant and open-minded liberals who are pushing for homosexual lifestyles to be portrayed in children’s programming is this: Just be tolerant long enough to look at this issue from someone else’s viewpoint.
There are many parents who have a belief and value system based on biblical principles who feel strongly that homosexuality is not acceptable. Everyone has some sort of value system, and I wonder what system of values the people who want to push homosexual education on children have. I’m sure they would not want their children forced into learning to tolerate behavior that is against their morals and values. Is there anything that would fall into this category?

Britain's top climatologist backs global warming claims

One of Britain's leading climate change experts has thrown his weight behind the claim that global warming is being caused by human activity in a report published today by the Institute of Physics.
The report by Professor Alan Thorpe, who takes up his post as chief of the Natural Environmental Research Council next month, aims to tackle sceptics who doubt the models scientists use to predict future climate change.
Professor Thorpe outlines the scientific basis for climate change and explains how the climate models actually predict future change. According to Thorpe, "uncertainty" is one of the key issues in predicting climate change but is an aspect of the research which is very poorly understood by the public and policy-makers.
In the report, Professor Thorpe says: "Science in crucial in determining government and international policy on climate change but only some of the views on this issue are actually supported by the scientific models".

Growth of the new lava dome inside the crater of Mount St. Helens continues, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash. During such eruptions, episodic changes in the level of activity can occur over days to months. The eruption could also intensify suddenly or with little warning and produce explosions that cause hazardous conditions within several miles of the crater and farther downwind. Small lahars could suddenly descend the Toutle River if triggered by heavy rain or by interaction of hot rocks with snow and ice. These lahars pose a negligible hazard below the Sediment Retention Structure (SRS) but could pose a hazard along the river channel upstream.
Potential ash hazards: Wind forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), coupled with eruption models, show that any ash clouds that rise above the crater rim today would drift eastward.
Potential ash hazards to aviation: Under current eruptive conditions, small, short-lived explosions may produce ash clouds that exceed 30,000 feet in altitude. Ash from such events can travel 100 miles or more downwind.
Recent observations: Storm clouds continue to obscure the volcano. The spate of larger earthquakes in the magnitude 2.5 to 3.2 range during the past few days appears to be waning. Those looking at PNSN webicorders will see an impressive signal beginning just before 8:30 a.m. PST from this morning’s magnitude 8.5 earthquake in Indonesia on most stations in the PNSN region, but not on stations near Mount St. Helens. That is because the sensitivity of seismic instruments near St. Helens has been turned down so that they will stay on scale and record well the entire size range of events that are occurring at the volcano during the ongoing eruption.

More recently, she’s been in the news for saying that if she hadn’t walked out of the speech in which Harvard President Lawrence Summers suggested that “innate ability” accounts for a lack of women in science, she would have “thrown up.”

Sumitomo Metal ordered to pay for sexual discrimination

OSAKA — The Osaka District Court ordered Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd on Monday to pay 63 million yen in compensation to four current and former female employees who suffered sexual discrimination in wages and promotions.
The ruling was handed down nine and a half years after a total of nine female employees sued Sumitomo Metal Industries, Sumitomo Chemical Co and Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd in August 1995. This was the first ruling among the three cases that went in favor of the employees. (Kyodo News)

Builders claim housing discrimination

GREEN RIVER -- Only the rich will be able to afford new housing in Wyoming's Star Valley under Lincoln County's zoning regulations, a lawsuit filed last week alleges.
A trio of Lincoln County landowners contends in the lawsuit that the county has violated the federal Fair Housing Act by unfairly limiting the development of affordable homes and housing, particularly in north Lincoln County.
By limiting affordable housing options -- specifically because the county requires large lots for new home construction -- Lincoln County officials are discriminating against people because of their race, color, national origin or disabilities in violation of federal law, the lawsuit contends.

I think people are confused
Bigotry continues; only targets change
They just aren’t like us. They can’t be trusted. They have no moral values. They are an insult to God. They could be tolerated if they kept out of sight, but they shouldn’t have children. If we were meant to mix, God wouldn’t have made us different. They are unpleasant to look at. They didn’t work and sweat to build this country.
Who are “they”? Whites, blacks, Jews, homosexuals, mixed-race couples, Catholics, Italians, Irish, Asians or perhaps you. Over the years these indictments of “them” have been used against one group after another. As time passes “they” changes with each new pronouncement by those who have the most recent, clearest understanding of God’s message. The moral outrage aimed at each newly designated “they” is surpassed only by the next message from those chosen few who interpret God’s intentions so loudly.
Bile-filled hypocrites preach intimidation and threats of doom if “they” are not eliminated, denied the rights of citizenship or in some way isolated from polite society. If these views are given continued credence, shame on us.

Don’t teach children tolerance of gays
Recently, there has been a debate about teaching tolerance of homosexuality to children. There are PBS shows under fire for promoting tolerance to the gay lifestyle, some geared to young children. I appreciate the stand that Education Secretary Margaret Spellings took regarding exposing young children to the gay lifestyle. She is right to question the wisdom of this kind of children’s programming.
My suggestion to tolerant and open-minded liberals who are pushing for homosexual lifestyles to be portrayed in children’s programming is this: Just be tolerant long enough to look at this issue from someone else’s viewpoint.
There are many parents who have a belief and value system based on biblical principles who feel strongly that homosexuality is not acceptable. Everyone has some sort of value system, and I wonder what system of values the people who want to push homosexual education on children have. I’m sure they would not want their children forced into learning to tolerate behavior that is against their morals and values. Is there anything that would fall into this category?

Britain's top climatologist backs global warming claims

One of Britain's leading climate change experts has thrown his weight behind the claim that global warming is being caused by human activity in a report published today by the Institute of Physics.
The report by Professor Alan Thorpe, who takes up his post as chief of the Natural Environmental Research Council next month, aims to tackle sceptics who doubt the models scientists use to predict future climate change.
Professor Thorpe outlines the scientific basis for climate change and explains how the climate models actually predict future change. According to Thorpe, "uncertainty" is one of the key issues in predicting climate change but is an aspect of the research which is very poorly understood by the public and policy-makers.
In the report, Professor Thorpe says: "Science in crucial in determining government and international policy on climate change but only some of the views on this issue are actually supported by the scientific models".

A small, short-lived explosive event at Mount St. Helens volcano began at approximately 5:25 p.m. PST, March 8, 2005.
Airplane pilot reports indicate that the resulting steam-and-ash plume reached an altitude of about 36,000 feet above sea level within a few minutes and drifted downwind to the northeast. The volcano's rim stands at 8,325 feet.

Growth of the new lava dome inside the crater of Mount St. Helens continues, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash. During such eruptions, episodic changes in the level of activity can occur over days to months. The eruption could also intensify suddenly or with little warning and produce explosions that cause hazardous conditions within several miles of the crater and farther downwind. Small lahars could suddenly descend the Toutle River if triggered by heavy rain or by interaction of hot rocks with snow and ice. These lahars pose a negligible hazard below the Sediment Retention Structure (SRS) but could pose a hazard along the river channel upstream.
Potential ash hazards: Wind forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), coupled with eruption models, show that any ash clouds that rise above the crater rim today would drift eastward.
Potential ash hazards to aviation: Under current eruptive conditions, small, short-lived explosions may produce ash clouds that exceed 30,000 feet in altitude. Ash from such events can travel 100 miles or more downwind.
Recent observations: Storm clouds continue to obscure the volcano. The spate of larger earthquakes in the magnitude 2.5 to 3.2 range during the past few days appears to be waning. Those looking at PNSN webicorders will see an impressive signal beginning just before 8:30 a.m. PST from this morning’s magnitude 8.5 earthquake in Indonesia on most stations in the PNSN region, but not on stations near Mount St. Helens. That is because the sensitivity of seismic instruments near St. Helens has been turned down so that they will stay on scale and record well the entire size range of events that are occurring at the volcano during the ongoing eruption.
