May 31, 2005. This is a close up of the 'business' of the storm below. If one looks closely at the clouds it literally looks as though the sky opened up and dumped water in bucketfuls on the ground. In my opinion that is exactly what happens with these storms. What is occuring with the rain is a rapid exchange of ions from a highly ionic strom regardless the evidence of lightning. That is why there is that 'hole' appearance. It is a sudden and rapid ion exchange between these low elevation clouds and the ground. It is regularly said in the reporting by us, the average citizens of the country, these storms are short and intense. Not to dismiss their drastic effect on living, not at all, as they are massive and dangerous; but the point is these storms seek resolve and violently due to high ion content.  Posted by Hello
May 31, 2005. There were two events. One that occurred over the MidWest from the Arctic Ocean Vortex which was met where the 'blue' shade is with some equatorial air and one that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico which was a heat plumb. The photo below reflects the Arctic Vortex System. Posted by Hello

This is not a long exposure, though the clouds on the left make it appear that way, nor is there any chance of rain (darn!). Taken on the northwest side of Tucson

I could be wrong about that June 21st date. This was June 1, 2005 in the ? foothills ? of Cody Wyoming. Since when do tornadoes touch down on hillsides rather than plains? Waht the heck? Reported by photographer as being very rare. I guess so. Posted by Hello

History . . .

Monroe, Marilyn (1926-1962), American motion-picture actor, who became the most famous international sex symbol of the 20th century. Born Norma Jean Mortenson in Los Angeles, the daughter of an emotionally unstable mother, she spent a troubled childhood in foster homes and orphanages and at the age of 16 entered into an ill-fated marriage. In 1944, while working in a defense plant, she was noticed by a United States Army photographer who induced her to pose for posters for the troops. Instantly popular as a model, Monroe soon found other assignments and registered with a modeling agency, which sent her to charm school and put her on a number of magazine covers. She was signed by the 20th Century-Fox film studio in 1946 but had only two small film roles before she was dropped by the studio. In 1948 she was briefly under contract to Columbia Pictures, and although she was soon out of work again, this stint yielded appearances in a low-budget musical, Ladies of the Chorus (1949), and in the film Love Happy (1949), in which she had a bit part with the

Ganji urges freedom of Iran's political prisoners
LONDON, May 31 - Iran's jailed journalist Akbar Ganji, who was out on leave for medical reasons, called for the release of political prisoners, journalists and students.
Ganji addressed a press conference at his residence on Monday, ISNA reported.
“I believe jailing political activists, journalists, students and webloggers is illegal and all these prisoners must be freed without any preconditions. Political prisoners have not committed any offense and they only think differently than the governing norms. Nowhere in the world thinking differently is considered a crime, unless violence is pursued. And none of our political prisoners have pursued violence.“

Debt cancellation: Victories and challenges
By Mark Engler

Foreign Policy in Focus
An old maxim of social reform movements (adapted from Schopenhauer's prickly take on the history of great ideas) states: "First they ignore you. Then they attack you. Then you win." For years, campaigners for debt relief in the developing world and their international supporters were dismissed or derided. For 2005, however, a new question has emerged: will they finally be able to claim victory?

world's largest development agency. His nomination has sparked a wave of outrage among independent development groups, who blame him for promoting unilateralism and militarism in US foreign policy, and for a lack of transparency in bidding for reconstruction contracts in Iraq.

Operation Desperation: Rumsfeld’s Baghdad Fiasco
by Mike Whitney

May 31, 2005
“I think they're in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency.”
-- Vice President Dick Cheney, assessing the strength of the insurgency on CNN’s Larry King Show, May 30, 2005
No one could have dreamed that two years after Bush declared “Mission Accomplished”, 40,000 Iraqi security personnel and 10,000 American soldiers would be needed to pacify Baghdad, but that, in fact, is the underlying meaning of Rumsfeld’s Operation Lightening. Simply put, the magnitude of the failure exceeds our wildest expectations.

Cheney daughters keep politics in the family

The big sister is the first deputy assistant secretary of state ever to have her own Secret Service detail, having passed up lucrative offers to become a television commentator for the privilege of promoting democracy in the Middle East.
The little sister may well be the first previously unknown presidential campaign aide to earn a million-dollar advance for her memoirs. But Elizabeth and Mary Cheney are no ordinary siblings - and their parents, US Vice-President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne, are no ordinary mother and father.
