This section of the parkway closes in any winter weather because of snow and ice at the higher elevations. Drive a few miles away from this spot and the snow is almost a foot deep with large ice chunks hanging from the tunnel entrances. This entrance is off The Great Smokey Mountains Expressway near Waynesville, NC.
