2000 Petermann Glacier. The glacier today is in poor condition compared to earlier years. There is a 'time loop' by NASA from 2000 - 2008 (click here). When watching the video I thought the increasing absense of snow over the years was as profound as the depleting glacier and its poor condition and the eruption of cracks throughout the glacier. The reason the absense of snow is a concern is because it takes percipitation in the form of ice and snow to generate glacial recharge.

Maulawi Hassan is basically an unknown in any reference I looked through. Difficult to say he is another Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

The war within in Afghanistan is now nearly seven and a half years on and the Taliban have repopulated the region, including the tribal areas of Pakistan. Needless to say, due to the lack of attention Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld gave this war it has blossomed into a massive 'conflict of interest' between the Taliban and NATO. I realize putting this war into terms somewhat foreign to 'the language and context' assigned to it by the media seems as though I am treating the matter somewhat frivilous and strange, but, I assure it is not. I'll explain in a moment.

The other reality is that it doesn't matter, to some extent, whom Maulawi Hassan really is because Osama and Omar are still 'in the mix.' So, to say Maulawi acted as a commander is somewhat irrelivant (except to the NATO forces in the region), and I want to put this 'mess' the new administration inherited into an understandable perspective. It is a perspective I hope others will come to appreciate as a 'reality context' of Afghanistan.

To begin, President Obama may take 'responsibility' for the USA and its forces as he should, but, he wasn't even a Senator when the war in Afghanistan was begun for the retaliation of the events of September 11, 2001. To say he is 'liking' his Commander and Chief role right now is probably a huge mistake because he never consented to any war in Iraq either. So, let's just say, he is 'carrying out a dynamic' that was begun by 'wealth merchants' in the White House that was never designed to achieve an end. To call it a mess is an understantment. And to realize President Obama never consented to the Iraq invasion, everyday he has to deal with this 'mess' is another day of tedious seeking for a resolve that was never 'built into' either wars in Afghanistan or Iraq. There was never an 'exit strategy' for either these wars. Okay?

What I am about to 'assess' is completely irrelivant to any 'exit strategy' President Obama is seeking, but, will outline a 'better reality' to citizens of civilized societies confronting the 'anima' of al Qaeda.

Below is a dam. It is the Grishk Dam in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. It is the province Maulawi Hassan was killed along with 'his gang' of sympathizers. One has to realize there are 'assets' to both the countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The ultimate goal and plan by Osama and Omar is to control these assets and make a country, similar in the 'anima' of Iran that will destroy civilization, be it Eastern or Western philosophy and sophistication. The Grishk Dam is such an asset and explainable why the Taliban would seek to assert themselves in this Province.

Make no mistake, the Taliban are sympathetic and enthusiastically so to any agenda of 'bin' and Omar. Why? Because of the religious fervor of Sharia Law (And I don't give a hoot if I spelled the dam word right. It is a 'basal instinct' male 'mind set' value system that lacks sophistication and civilility. It has no place in today's world.) We have witnessed the 'cruelty' of the Taliban in Afghanistan before and after the invasion into Afghanistan and know full well this is an oppressive regime of religious devotees that kill people that don't obey silly rules.

But, to return to the dam, it was constructed for hydroelectric power by the USA prior to the invasion into Afghanistan by the Russians. As a matter of fact, the Russians should have asked us to ally with them when they invaded the region because we were actively involved in 'modernization' of Afghanistan and this dam was one of the projects. The 'populous/political' MIND SET of Americans at the time Russia took its initiative into Afghanistan was left over from The Cold War. The Russians 'of the day' (the 1960s) would no sooner seek help from the USA or exchange intelligence because it would be publically and internationally ridiculed as a form of 'surrender' to Western values. Etc., etc., etc.

NATO said Monday its troops targeted the compound of insurgent leader Maulawi Hassan in Helmand province. He and nine associates were killed.
The attack took place Saturday.
NATO says Hassan was a senior insurgent figure in northern Helmand.
Two NATO soldiers and a contractor were killed Sunday in the same region.
Southern Afghanistan is the center of the Taliban insurgency, where thousands of new U.S. troops will deploy later this year to try reverse militant gains.

So, those are American dollars that built that hydroelectric dam and at the time the USA was 'in it' for the long haul in peaceful measure to assist the Afghan government to elevate the people to a better quality of life. The project was called, oddly enough, "little America."

Fast forward to 2001 and the invasion into Afghanistan when it was realized Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar were responsible for the guidance and inspiration of the events of September 11, 2001. And yes I am saying the Taliban are very much an enemy to civilization no matter what form it takes and the reason is their devotion to Sharia Law. The Taliban even today are harboring al Qaeda leadership and therefore are enemies to any form of benevolent civilized nation. Absolutely. Whether the 'outreach' to the Taliban will result in resolution of these issues is a good guess, but, considering the fact that only a short time ago Omar wanted to ride his 'ass (donkey)' into Kandahar, the place he longingly calls home, my guess is that the Taliban will be highly manipulative and seeking to 'control' rather than 'remit.'

Now if I was an astute politician I would want to use that event to come up smelling like Roses. And to some extent citizens of NATO countries including the US would like to find a good excuse for ending this mess based on those 'relief' scenarios alone and that is what the Taliban is 'banking' on.

But, to return to Maulawi Hassan. Who is he really? Who is this obsure figure to the NATO mission? Let's take a look at the ruthless Maulawi and why he is a 'go for' of 'bin's.

Maulawi Hassan is a local. He has lived his life in Afghanistan, more than likely never leaving the province in which he was killed. He grew up with the Taliban and inspired by their rule under Sharia Law. He doesn't really have much of a choice, now does he. He is a peripheral individual that protects Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar from being captured and killed. He believed in what he did to NATO and in that definition opposes the 'established and benevolent' government of Afghanistan and Karzai. But, there is more to Hassan. He was operating with an understanding of another figure. Both, he and his operative boss would be considered 'kids' by civilized standards.

His operative boss is a person by the name of Taliban Mullah Rahmatullah. Mullah Rahmatullah is listed as #621 on the list of Gitmo Detainees (click here). He is detainee number 964. When classified by the USA military he was stated to have been born in 1981 and the age of 20 when apprehended and sent as a military combatant. Starting to get the picture here?

...“Maulawi Hassan (click here) answered to senior Taliban Mullah Rahmatullah who directs insurgent activity from outside Afghanistan. Mullah Rahmatullah replaced Abdhul Wali Akhund, who was killed by ISAF troops in the summer of 2008,” it said....

Now, that the information is known about Hassan and his 'operative boss' one can Google the Mullah's name and realize as Detainee 964 he was 'on display' by the former administration in a military tribunal. I am not interested in 'hashing out' the past and there is no way this young person shouldn't stand trial for his offenses and be sentenced. There is also a dynamic for 'maintaining' the Mullah as an ? enemy combatant ? that is a bunch of hog wash because there in lies the Rumsfeld reasoning for torture. So get over it.

Here is the way I see it.

The war in Afghanistan can go on forever. As more young people come 'of age' as far as al Qaeda is concerned the more will enter into the Taliban 'dictorate' and continue to expand its influence and desire for adverse outcomes to benevolent nations. The detainees in Gitmo need to be assessed for their responsibility for September 11th and held for trial. Any detainees suspected of murdering any NATO military need to be tried and sentenced. Those trials should be public and with outcomes that can be witnessed by The Taliban and al Qaeda. If the public display of the trials are not held, the young people under the Taliban will have no concrete method of knowing their fate.

About the region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is more than simply a war against 'evil.' It encompasses a lot more than two countries, it encompasses a 'strategy' to 'secure' benevolent nations, including those of Eastern philosophy away from terrorists, of which Iran's leadership practices. Iran denies the Holocaust and in doing so unleashes the groundwork for annihilation of Israel. That IS anti-semitism and a form of terrorist threat.

While diplomacy is the best outcome for all the nations involved, including Afghanistan, Iran, the terrorist element in Pakistan, Kashmir and India; the likelihood of such diplomacy having a profound effect on the region is doubtful. The variables are the roles of Russia and China and their influence with Iran, therefore, its influence with neighboring countries. While Pakistan's new government is benevolent to any civilized outcome there are dynamics playing out in Kashmir that add to the instability in Afghanistan and Pakistan. India has to become a devoted ally in these circumstances and willing to work with the USA to bolster the region from threats of terrorists WITHOUT compromising the stability that is possible under the new Pakistani government.

That said, what do we do about the war raging in Afghanistan with its own recrutiment effort in Pakistan? If the Taliban won't commit to 'cooperative' governance with the established government of Afghanistan while stopping all hostilities measurable by accepting directives of rebuilding and benevolence as defined by NATO then what are the alternatives? There aren't many. To allow the Taliban to continue to build their military and form more and more terrorist elements within its dictorate and otherwise is to ensure the continued threat against benevolent nations and their economies. That is unacceptable. A continued war with the Taliban and NATO is questionably sustainable. The only answer is to destroy Taliban strongholds and eliminate the threat based on an understood declaration of war against civlization by these people. The Taliban leadership are not passive entities 'caught up' in a dynamic they don't understand or don't consent to, they are a 'warrior' culture that prides their control by strict and unreasonable 'culture' laws that behead innocent people when defined by other nations.

It can't be tolerated. The region's population of Taliban will have to be reduced and the way that occurs will be at the pleasure of NATO and the USA.

War is war and unless diplomacy can garner acceptance of a peace directive by these nations, the USA has been placed in a hideous position by the previous administration and the United Nations has to come to terms with that as we act to defend our nation from the terrorist elements in this region of the world AND the egregious exploitation of the Neocons of the previous DC administration.

Could it be another Vietnam exit? With NATO involved and valuing them as allies, I profoundly doubt it.

In 2002, then Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill commissioned a study to back up his position on sustaining the tax rate and raising taxes in the future.

By the end of that year, both the report commissioned by O'Neill and the Treasury Secretary himself disappeared from any offical capacity. In the report the deficit was predicted to grow to $44 trillion. As Treasury Secretary, Paul O'Neill opposed tax cuts and demanded health care reform.

The government should commission a "Total Value Opportunity" study of the five best hospitals to see how close to perfection they can get, so that other institutions can measure their own performance against them...."

Study commissioned by O’Neill sees $44 trillion in red ink

The Bush administration has shelved a report commissioned by the Treasury that shows the U.S. currently faces a future of chronic federal budget deficits totaling at least $44 trillion in current U.S. dollars.

The study, the most comprehensive assessment of how the U.S. government is at risk of being overwhelmed by the “baby boom” generation’s future healthcare and retirement costs, was commissioned by then-Treasury secretary Paul O’Neill.

But the Bush administration chose to keep the findings out of the annual budget report for fiscal year 2004, published in February, as the White House campaigned for a tax-cut package that critics claim will expand future deficits.

The study asserts that sharp tax increases, massive spending cuts or a painful mix of both are unavoidable if the U.S. is to meet benefit promises to future generations. It estimates that closing the gap would require the equivalent of an immediate and permanent 66 percent across-the-board income tax increase.

The study was being circulated as an independent working paper among Washington think-tanks as President George W. Bush on Wednesday signed into law a 10-year, $350 billion tax-cut package he welcomed as a victory for hard-working Americans and the economy.

The analysis was spearheaded by Kent Smetters, then-Treasury deputy assistant secretary for economic policy, and Jagdessh Gokhale, then a consultant to the Treasury. Mr. Gokhale, now an economist for the Cleveland Federal Reserve, said: “When we were conducting the study, my impression was that it was slated to appear [in the Budget]. At some point, the momentum builds and you think everything is a go, and then the decision came down that we weren’t part of the prospective budget.”

Mr. O’Neill, who was fired last December, refused to comment.

The study’s analysis of future deficits dwarfs previous estimates of the financial challenge facing Washington. It is roughly equivalent to 10 times the publicly held national debt, four years of U.S. economic output or more than 94 percent of all U.S. household assets. Alan Greenspan, Federal Reserve chairman, last week bemoaned what he called Washington’s “deafening” silence about the future crunch.

President Bush signed into law a $350 billion tax-cut package on Wednesday saying:‘ ‘We can say loud and clear to the American people: You got more of your own money to spend so that this economy can get a good wind behind it.”

The estimates reflect the extent to which the annual deficit, the national debt and other widely reported, backward-looking data are becoming archaic and misleading as measures of the government’s solvency. Mr. Smetters, now a University of Pennsylvania finance professor, said tax cuts were only a fraction of the imbalance, and that the bigger problem “is the whole [budget] language we’re using.”Laurence Kotlikoff, an expert on long-term budget accounting, alleged in a recent Boston Globe editorial that the Bush administration suppressed the research to ease passage of the tax-cut plan.

An administration official said the study was designed as a thought-piece for internal discussion — one among many left every year on the cutting-room floor — and noted the budget’s extensive discussion of projected, 75-year Social Security and Medicare shortfalls.

How many more?

Sgt. Dunakin, Sgt. Romans and Sgt. Sakai are dead today. It isn't enough to console the familes. Oakland, California is 'short' three wonderful men on their police force. There is another officer struggling for his life and one a hero for killing the man with the weapon.

What if something else occurred. What if a 'friend' of the murder decided to 'help out' with an assault weapon of his own. What if the neighborhood became a 'No Go' zone? Not possible in the USA. Nonsense, there are already 'No Go' zones in some of the worst crime ridden areas in this country. But, take it one step further, what if the USA becomes a Juarez? Don't tell me the potential is not there, we already know where the drug cartels get their weapons.

The United States of America does not need or should desire personal possession of assault weapons and I defy anyone to make a valid argument otherwise, even in Alaska. Time to get it done. Regulations and plenty of them. There has to be a limit on the number manufactured within the country as well. That is NOT per manufacturer that is 'per year' of manufacturing !

Sure there are tensions in the community. Yeah, things can go wrong. No, I don't want to be at the end of a mistake, nor do I want any member of my family or friends cut down by a mistake, but, the chances of that are far less when people no longer possess assault weapons and officers have to be better and faster than any measure they have to protecting themselves.

I know all the arguments. They aren't valid. Sgt. Sakai was doing his job. Oh, I know they put their lives on the line everyday and they know the danger, but, hell and damnation that is NO EXCUSE for increasing the chances he is going to face death more often or in greater opportunity.

In the case of the Sichuan, China quake, it was a matter of ignorance when the people first settled there.

China has proven with the Three Gorges Dam that where knowledge of adversity to its populous will occur they are capable of moving huge populations of people to different living standards and locations.

The Sichuan quake was predictable simply by the 'geology' of the region, however, the people has long lived in the region and hence the damage to them was 'set.' With geological surveys of seimic and potentially seimic areas, China and other nations, should be able to safe guard their people and provide improved quality of life for them and their safety.

We ask a lot of China and countries such as Pakistan that support many people within their borders when the governments are offered expertise to match the demands of safety to their populous. How can the people of these countries NOT characterize their misfortunes as an 'act of God' as if displeasure with their obedience. It is tragedies such as this that are used to the advantage of 'anti-government' organizations such as al Qaeda and the Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan to turn the populous away from favoring their governments in rituals of superstition and confusion.

Likewise, the suffering of the people following such tragedies can act as a 'methodology' against the government as well. Seeking venues of opportunity to protect populations of people by including within treaties and diplomatic understandings that people will receive safety from their governments both in the way of housing designed to 'code' and response to emergency to reassure rescue.

It is these basic needs of citizens of these countries that should be included in State Department initiatives as 'in roads' to help 'stable' governments' maintain 'favor' with their people. Beyond that understanding it is also the 'moral' directive of the people of the USA to be sure such protections occur for other people. It is classic for the USA populous to be concerned and extend aid and NGO initiatives when tragedy strikes. So, to that end, we are the people most concerned with extending opportunities of expertise to these governments and help them build their own industries initially lending ours.

The number of earthquake-related fatalities across the world was much higher in 2008 than in recent years. (click title to entry - thank you)
About 88,070 deaths resulted from earthquake activity worldwide during 2008, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and confirmed by the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This is the largest number of deaths from earthquakes in a year since 2004.
The strongest and most destructive earthquake of 2008 occurred in Eastern Sichuan, China on May 12, claiming at least 69,185 lives. This 7.9 magnitude earthquake injured 374,171 people, while a further 18,467 remain missing and are presumed dead in the Chengdu-Lixian-Guangyuan area. More than 45.5 million people-a total greater than the combined populations of California, Arizona and Nevada-were affected by this earthquake, which struck in one of China's most densely-populated regions. The event also triggered many landslides, some of which buried large sections of some towns including Beichuan.
In addition to China, earthquakes killed people in 13 countries on 4 continents during the past year, including Algeria, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Peru, Russia, and Rwanda.
In the contiguous United States, the highest magnitude earthquake in 2008 occurred at 6.0 on Feb. 21 near Wells, Nevada. While no lives were lost as a result of this quake, at least three people were injured and more than 20 buildings were heavily damaged....

A powerful undersea earthquake struck off the south Pacific island of Tonga on Friday and generated a tsunami capable of causing severe damage to the area, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported. There were no reports of damage or of sea levels rising in Fiji or Tonga, and the tsunami warning was later cancelled. The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.9 quake struck 212.4 kilometres southeast of Nuku'alofa, Tonga, at 7am NZT on Friday. "Sea level readings confirm that a tsunami was generated. This tsunami may have been destructive along coastlines of the region near the earthquake epicenter," the US National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said....

There is an opportunity for the USA to develop industry surrounding this reality. It begins with realizing a State Department engaged with countries such as Pakistan can start to lend a potential for the Pakistani government to reassure its populous it is a benevolent government that cares about them. Sadly, the potential for engineers to work on 'seismic proof' construction in very dangerous regions of the world, providing the people there with expertise to train and perform their own construction is sometimes left to 'fumbing' around 'the net.' As the earthquakes occur further from the 'ridge' (In this case it is a 'trench' subducting to the Australian plate, but, those terms are so obsure to most people that it is easier to call it a ridge. Most people understand that. But, to geologists a ridge is a different geological feature. Simplicity sake I'll call it a ridge.) they are deeper. The deeper the earthquakes, potential for land movement is greater, simply because of the 'area' between the surface and depth of quake. Not all quakes manifest in a full thickness of the location to the surface either. The more land displacement and velocity of the quake the more chance of tsunami, but, it also depends on the 'direction' of that velocity as well. So, predicting earthquakes and tsunamis is not carved in stone, hence, the potential for death.

LANSING -- Backers of a proposed elevated rail line between Lansing, Ann Arbor and Detroit will try to sell the public on an Earth-friendly plan to send hydrogen-powered trains hurtling along stainless steel rails.
Four freshman lawmakers plan hearings beginning next month in the state's capital to sell the $2 billion privately funded plan.
"The devil will be in the details, of course," said Rep. Mike Huckleberry, D-Greenville, one of the lawmakers backing the plan. "But this concept has enough potential to make it worth pursuing. I'm hoping that we can develop this technology and transportation idea into Michigan jobs."...


It is difficult to 'agree' with the current budget until one realizes the extent this will add jobs due to vast infrastructure changes. The tax base alone will support a far larger budget that will fund these changes in the USA. Video (click here) I believe President Obama has been extremely productive in his early days for the purpose of painting a complete picture to the USA's people. No one can pass judgement until all is realized in the vastness of the definition of 'change.' You know, it is time the USA 'grow up' and stop seeking 'personal creature comforts (A Republican Agenda.)

Today, Governors Schwarzenegger, Rendell and Bloomberg spoke outside the White House after meeting with President Obama. They outlined an aggressive approach to 'growing' the nation's infrastructure by adding 'State of the Art' infrastructure to energy and transportation.

Citing the huge and current infrastructure changes made in allied nations such as those in Europe, and including private enterprise to particiate, the Governors were more than optimistic in embarking on a Brave New World that would insure generations of Americans that they would indeed have a country that lives within the limits of Earth's Troposphere.

Some states are already 'on board' and planning for the future while awaiting sufficient funding to begin.

The new Congressional Budget Office figures offered a far more dire outlook for Obama's budget than the new administration predicted just last month - a deficit $2.3 trillion worse. It's a prospect even the president's own budget director called unsustainable....

Pakistan rocket attack 'kills 10' - It is a civil war between the Taliban and Tribes

The next major global conflict has the potential to be here. I don't see the forces of terrorists winning and it will be the major nations of the region that will finally settle the 'hornets-nest' of Bin Laden.

The problems existing is to come to terms with protecting the tribes and Afghanis while eliminating the killing force of the Taliban whom have not come forward for expressions of peaceful intent. And what will Iran do? With continued movement toward escalation of its nuclear capacity will it chose to attempt to support terrorists while trying to hold its border with the Kurds, PKK and Turkey or will it participate in securing its border with Afghanistan and Pakistan to stop the growth of any ammunition trade with the Taliban and al Qaeda? India is more than willing to see an end to any terrorist influence and unrest, but, can it be done peacefully or will there have to be conflict to 'end it' and secure civilization from the remaining forces of dysfunctional and renegade authority?

Conducting aggression in this region to stop terrorists forever is a tough call. To escalate any attacks against the Taliban requires insight to the intentions of Iran while controlling pirates and ship traffic in the Arabian Sea. If diplomacy fails to stop the Taliban and protect tribes and the innocent civilians of Afghanistan and Pakistan will the Clinton State Department have secured the alliances of Russia, China, India and perhaps Iran to act responsibility to stop this insanity called al Qaeda? Russia is cutting its defense budget and China has been allies before with Pakistan in arming against India and the West. Its a tough row to hoe but, can it be done to end the domination of terrorist states in the region?

The lesson to be learned is that domestic protections against 'terrorist methods' is by far the most immediate and perhaps the best long term solution to another September 11th. It is why Secretary Napolitano is seeking to secure trains and buses while looking to the borders and ports for infrastructure security. Her department has to expand its personnel to insure more border personnel while Customs expands its capacity as well.

If the same 'road trip' made above was tried today, those trying to complete it would be killed by Taliban forces. The problem existing in Afghanistan and the tribal areas of Pakistan is taking a turn for the worse. In a picture essay below it is clear there are tensions 'created' by the Taliban. They are interested in killing off the people living peacefully among the mountains and cause the NATO and UN forces in the region a great deal of hardship and difficulty by controlling the main road used for supplies. It is why Russia has granted the USA access to the region. The problem with terrorist infiltration of the region is far worse today simply because they have gone unchecked for the most part.

Driving through the Khyber these days (click here for perspective from Winter of 2008) has gotten much more risky. There was serious fighting between the semi secular Afridi. like Yahya’s friends, and their more fundamentalist Taliban influenced neighbors. Scenes like the picture below are common now and unless things change dramatically I would not recommend driving through the Khyber Pass.

President Obama keeps an Active Public Presence

The media is having a strange response to the new President. They have been unable to really 'diss' him as he keeps such an active public presence. And rightfully so. It is an unfortunate reality to realize the only way the media sees its role is to 'diss' a very popular President hoping to drive him into the basement with his ratings. I believe that is going to be difficult and competing with a USA President 'for attention' isn't a good idea.

There is a lot of work to be done in the USA to reclaim its economy and value of its dollar. Weeding out 'desireable' companies that aren't in huge debt themselves and seeking 'bailout' from the Fed will be a full time job. The USA needs quality employment, not just 'any' employment at any cost. To achieve 'poor quality employment' in the USA will only cause the same economic catastrophe all over again. I would think the media most interested in 'entertaining' the American public would be approaching them from an 'education' perspective and what constitutes 'viable employment' with longevity toward retirement. That of course includes very viable and healthy companies with products that sustain 'trends' in customer satisfaction when it comes to a "Green Economy."

The media is getting it wrong with Iran. They are saying that the video by President Obama is unique and never been tried before. Yes and no. Yes, a cheery welcome to the people of Iran is a new approach and I believe it is sincere, but, the 'reaching past' the Iranian government propagandized media has been used before in Iraq by Bush before he invaded the country. While I understand President Obama's position in attempting to reach a reasonable solution to Iran's 'runaway' nuclear program, supporting UN efforts for inspections and disarmament measures he is engaging with Russia, there is a lot "W"rong in the Gulf.

Today there was another boarding of a ship that was seized by pirates and at the same time there are reports that Iran has reached capacity of producing 'fissile' material in constructing a nuclear weapon. There is also reports of the collision of two USA vessels, one a surface ship and one a submarine. I would not be surprised if the sub is stationed along with its comliment of surface ships in the region of Hormuz for the purpose of monitoring Iranian missile movement and the possible construction of a missile to launch with nuclear capacity.

If the collision occurred in Homuz due to the Navy's attempts to interrupt pirating of vessels as well as monitor Iran I would proport the nuclear capacity of Iran and its interruption of its program overshadows in huge measure any pirating issue.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli President Shimon Peres has sent a rare greeting to the people of Iran praising them and saying they would be better off without their hard-line leadership.
In the taped audio message, Peres lauds Iran's ancient culture and urges what he calls the "noble Iranian nation" to "return to its rightful place among developed nations."
The greeting marking Iran's Nowruz holiday was broadcast Friday on the Voice of Israel's Farsi-language station. The station is beamed to Iran, but it is unclear how many Iranians had heard it.
It coincided with President Barack Obama's video message to Iran in which he appealed to Iranians to shift away from decades of confrontation.

One might note in the article below, the word the man is using is PROGRESS.

Iran has shown world powers they cannot block its nuclear progress, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Friday, but he made no mention of a new message by U.S. President Barack Obama to his country. In a separate recorded speech to mark the Iranian New Year, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said global powers had reached a "dead end". But he too made no mention of Obama's videotaped offer of a "new beginning" of diplomatic engagement. Khamenei said Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, had managed to limit the impact of the global economic downturn and of sanctions imposed on it over its nuclear activities.

Iran and the United States are embroiled in a dispute over Tehran's nuclear program, which Washington and its allies suspect is aimed at making bombs. Tehran says the program is for peaceful power generation....

Zoos

American Zoos have to 'incorporate' their conservation efforts separately as a non-profit and different from any amusement areas or rides at the zoos.

The stimulus package is not meant to increase American's past time, so much as increase employment opportunity with a focus in changing the American infrastructure regarding Climate Change, the nation's health and new technologies.


Zoos have been an important venue to educating the public about Climate Change and Human Induced Global Warming in the 'void' of any mention during eight oppressive years of environmental awareness. To be completely fair.

First a woman made big news for having octuplets, and now a monkey is making news for having triplets.
It might not seem as big a deal as eight, but for cotton-top tamarins, triplets are very rare.
They were born at the Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City a few weeks ago.
It's hard to see them in the video linked at the top of this story, but the newborns are holding onto their parent's back.
Usually, this type of monkey gives birth to twins once a year.
Cotton-top tamarins are one of the most endangered primates in the world.

MICHIGAN CITY - Triplet cotton top tamarins born two weeks ago at the Washington Park Zoo have brought the local family to nine members.
Jamie Huss, zoo assistant director and primate keeper, is giving special attention to baby Chloe, who was found lying on the floor and basically ignored by her mother, who was busy caring for the other two babies. Huss initially thought Chloe wouldn't stay alive. She's been feeding Chloe with an eye dropper every few hours."She's getting over pneumonia," Huss said, "and is on antibiotics." Just like a human baby, Chloe has a vaporizer and heating pad to help her get better, and is kept in a glassed-in portable nursery. Huss said Chloe was born full-term and weighs only one-tenth of a pound. She is 6 inches long and has a 6-inch tail. Adults weigh up to 1 1/2 pounds and grow to only 8 inches. The birth of triplet cotton top tamarins is unusual, according to zoo director Johnnie Martinez. He waited for a few weeks before announcing the birth, to make sure Chloe was healthy.
Martinez said the cotton top tamarins are an endangered species of mini-primates found only in northern Columbia in South America. The total world population is an estimated 2,000 to 3,000.In the zoo, the cotton top tamarins eat fruits and vegetables, monkey biscuits, meal worms and marmoset diet. They have only one female and one male who reproduce and the entire family helps with the young, carrying infants on their backs. Until she can be reintroduced to her family, Chloe is clinging on to a stuffed teddy bear.

CHICAGO - Long counted as cultural, educational and economic treasures in their communities, American zoos and aquariums were more than a little upset when the $787 billion economic stimulus package signed into law recently expressly denied them any of the money.
"None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available in this Act may be used by any State or local government, or any private entity, for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, or swimming pool," the legislation states.
Being lumped in with casinos and golf courses on a scale of civic merit was insult added to injury. At a time when philanthropic giving is shrinking along with the economy, being denied a source of funding hurts.
"Zoos and aquariums don't belong on that list," said Steve Feldman, spokesman for the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the trade group for the industry.
They are among the most popular family and tourist attractions, they are crucial conservation centers and, he said, they contribute $8.4 billion to the gross domestic product and more than 100,000 jobs annually....

New head of NOAA says science will guide policy

GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- The new head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will not only be talking the talk on global warming, she will be walking the walk - eight blocks from the Metro station to her office.
Former Oregon State University marine biologist Jane Lubchenco had planned to rent a small apartment close enough to walk to her offices in the nation's capital, but got sticker shock when she saw the prices - $5,000 for a one-bedroom apartment - enough to finance a large house back home.
So she settled for a little place in the Cleveland Park neighborhood near the Red Line station, walking distance from grocery stores, drug stores and parks, though not the coastal marine ecosystems that have been her lifelong interest.

The war is a 'focus' because of the violence itself brings to Iraq, but, once the USA is gone from its turbulence the country will still have enormous problems to handle with little time for war.

Turkey, Syria cooperate on water front (click here)

With water in the Middle East being depleted and demand growing fast, Turkey and Syria have put their differences aside and begun findings ways to share water equitably through innovative projects.

One project both countries agreed in principle to develop is the Asi Friendship Dam, to be built on the Asi (Orontes) River on the border between Syria and Turkey. The Asi River originates in Syria and flows through Turkey's Hatay province before spilling into the Mediterranean Sea.
A Turkish team of technical experts will go to Syria this weekend to start work on mapping, with feasibility studies soon to follow, said sources from the State Waterworks Authority (DSİ) who requested to remain anonymous....

The initial payment was $80 billion, and there have been subsequent payments bringing it up to about $183 billion, which to put it in perspective is larger by significant percentage than the entire budget of the state of New York for the fiscal year, but for much of that money, AIG was a conduit. It was given to AIG, and AIG then shipped it on through to other firms. My question is, when the group got together, and as we best understand it, it was Mr. Bernanke and Tim Geithner and Hank Paulson, and Lloyd Blankfein, I think was there as well, the CEO of Goldman. When they got together last fall and decided very, very quickly that AIG needed $80 billion. Why did they make that determination? That is the issue Congress should be probing."
Spitzer's comments have been echoed by many on Wall Street and in business media. The Street.com reports that $22.4 billion of $118.4 billion government capital infusion was given to a dozen financial firms that includes Goldman, BofA and J.P. Morgan....

How many times after October when Paulson and Bush pulled the scam of the century did I say, "I wish Eliot Spitzer were in office today." I can't count the number of times I said that to myself.

He made a brief appearance on Wolf Blitzer's Situation Room and his words rang true like I knew they would. He stated, "The relationship between AIG and Goldman Sachs should be investigated."

Thank you, Eliot. Thank you, I am glad you are still there. He appears on CNN on Sunday at 1PM according to Blitzer. Check the TV listings to be sure. I can't wait !!!!!!

...Spitzer told WNYC radio politicians who focus on the huge bonuses paid out by AIG are missing the larger picture.


"The bonuses are the flavor of the month," Spitzer said. "You see the word bonus in a headline, someone gets a subpoena two minutes later."


Cuomo has led the charge against the bonuses AIG paid out after getting a taxpayer-funded bailout.


"This is typical political screaming and shouting and missing the larger issue," which, he said, is that AIG is funneling bailout money to cash-rich firms like Goldman Sachs and Bank of America...

Goldman Sachs has yet to speak to the US Treasury about repaying its $10bn (£7bn) preferred equity stake despite its desire to pay the funds back.

The Daily Telegraph has learnt that there have been no conversations between Treasury officials and Goldman management on the subject and none are scheduled.
Two weeks ago, Goldman chief financial officer David Viniar declared that the bank would like to repay its TARP money by the end of the year, but gave no timetable.

Since then, speculation has increased about when Goldman will make its move, given the pay restrictions the bank may have to impose if it holds on to the money.
Of the restrictions, Mr Viniar said Goldman wanted "to get out from under that" by the end of this year and could issue preferred shares to private invesotrs to replace the government funds. Goldman declined to comment.
Repayment of the funds - which brought with them restrictions on bankers pay and bonuses, following 11th-hour amendments to the $787bn fiscal stimulus bill - is subject to approval by the Treasury and regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission.
In addition, before Goldman can repay the money, it has under the terms of the agreement to raise the same amount from the private markets, something which remains difficult given the uncertainty in the capital markets....

Eliot Spitzer: We were approached by some sources who said that AIG (click here for audio), which was at the time guided by Hank Greenberg as CEO, was, to speak in street vernacular, juicing its books by creating false reinsurance contracts that would appear to add capital to its balance sheet. Now that sounds all very complicated but, what it really means is they were playing games with their accounting in order to look stronger than they were. Hank Greenberg, there are tapes that prove this, was very, very concerned with any, even minor, fluctuation in their stock evaluation.

These contracts, it was alleged, were designed to make them look better in the eyes of Wall Street. We investigated, brought a civil case to settlement of $1.4 billion. At the time, $1.4 billion seemed like a lot of money. It was the biggest financial settlement ever. The board removed Hank Greenberg because he invoked the Fifth Amendment, when he was asked about this. Four people were charged criminally and convicted for basically playing games. But it lead us to inquire and to probe into the inner workings of the company and what we saw was a mess....

Currently, Wall Street entities would like to divide AIG into 'separate entities.' Wall Street would like to sell off the profitable insurance structure at AIG to MetLife or other companies able to take over that aspect of the company. As soon as the insurance section of AIG is sold off, the 'securities' entity will fail because there is no viable income from that end of the company.

The current CEO whom have dedicated some retirement days to overseeing AIG into solvency for the American people, believes as soon as the securities are dissolved, AIG will be a profitable business with incomes over one trillion per year.

It is in the best interest of the American people that AIG remain intact and pay back the loans extended to the company.

If Wall Street has its way, when the insurance sector of AIG is sold, the 'bill' to the American people will be left unpaid as soon as the securities division fails.

If AIG comes out of this crisis as a viable insurance company with global reach, it will employ people into retirement for decades to come.

There needs to be profound changes made in the culture of Wall Street. To date, nothing has changed because someone has 'brain washed' the federal government that it would be better not to change anything in a crisis. It's nonsense and sincere regulation needs to take place along with a new culture of 'truth' and 'benevolence.'

...The Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, I think everyone should keep in mind speaks to an ideology that is precisely the ideology of that last 10 years that got us to where we are. Never wanting a regulatory framework that would require either adequate capital, reasonable controls, or an examination of the types of remarkably outsized risks that we are talking about. So you have a clear ideological choice to be made here. Either The Wall Street Journal Editorial Page or the one that I think we are all now gravitating towards which is sound, reasonable regulation....

...The appearance that this was all an inside job is overwhelming. AIG was nothing more than a conduit for huge capital flows to the same old suspects, with no reason or explanation....

The problem with Bernanke. The latest cliche, "Don't change the rules in an economic crisis."

Welcome to the Bernanke Big Top where egos are more important than economic stability.

We need regulation and we need to get rid of Bernanke !!!!!!!!! The entire set of values surrounding the USA economy at this point is becoming immoral with the catering to Wall Street and its global focus.

Fed policy makers said yesterday they plan to buy as much as $300 billion of U.S. government bonds and step up purchases of mortgage bonds, expanding the central bank’s balance sheet by as much as $1.15 trillion. The extra supply of dollars threatens to overwhelm investors just as the budget deficit swells.
The trade-weighted Dollar Index, which tracks the currency’s performance against the euro, yen, pound, Canadian dollar, Swiss franc and Swedish krona, tumbled 2.7 percent to 84.595, its biggest one-day drop since 1971. That pushed its decline to 5.6 percent since reaching 89.62 on March 4, the highest in almost four years....

...Yields on 10-year Treasuries declined the most since 1962 after the Fed said it would concentrate purchases in notes due from two to 10 years. The central bank is expanding its quantitative easing policy, which already includes agency and mortgage debt, to more than $1.85 trillion in securities....



"...where the standard rules don't apply. In particular, the argument goes, when there are idle resources lying around, the traditional economic problem of scarcity disappears. The government can prime the pump by throwing borrowed money around, and this can only boost total output, because employed workers produce more than unemployed workers."

He is processing the gross misunderstanding that 'tickle down' works. We know from Bush 41 that 'tickle down' is a myth. It doesn't work. Bernanke is infusing money into the "W"rong place. By indulging financial institutions, Ben Bernanke is stating the old method of trickle down will actually produce jobs in the USA. It won't. The financial institutions that Mr. Bernanke caters to are global international entities with interests in far different places than the USA's backyard.

If Bernanke is allowed to continue in his 'dreamscape' the monies will disappear no different than the Bush/Paulson TARP funds. Bernanke is known for lacking structure in all his policies. He has no intention of defining the use of these funds, monitoring their distribution and quite frankly what will occur is that the USA Fed will be bailing out the entire global economy while being tied to insoluable debt without a growing work force and tax base.

Those monies will disappear, but, they will not generate jobs and hence there will be no house sales. Bernanke cannot make consumers spend and there in lies the problem. The majority of the USA's GDP, to date, relies on consumer spending. It is an economy based on the idea that Americans are wealthy and don't need to work so much as invest.

Bernanke and those like him lack the insight to realize until the USA changes its methods of generating GDP as translated into labor there won't be a recovery. Bernanke can't give houses away, even with a record low mortgage rate, no matter what he tries, simply because, there aren't people 'solvent' to pay for them. The tragic reality of this economic train wreck is when home owners declared bankruptcy it wasn't simply to get out of debt they can't afford and start over, it is because they lost everything. They lost their jobs, equity and assets. There is nothing on the other side of the bankruptcy that can act as a mechanism to 'rebuild' lives.

The crash occurred because of exploitive government with literally no direction except the purpose of exploitation for greed. The hollow Republican adminnistration literally crashed an economy that has no way of regenerating itself. The purpose of the USA over the past eight years has been meaningless. The huge pork barrel budgets of the Republicans dominated the legislature for 'ideological' reasons. There was no solid substance to any of it. It is nearly unfathomable to realize eight years of Republican pork and legislature had no purpose except to legislate morality and defense spending. Even the defense spending served no purpose. The war in Iraq had no basis of purpose and still doesn't except for the fear of the unknown should we leave. The Republican crony spending achieved nothing but a government supported economy in areas that could not be outsourced for greater profit taking. There was no substantive growth in job sectors and when the USA stopped funding an ideology, the economy tanked.

Bernanke's trillion has no meaning, it is not linked with supportive structures that will infuse monies to producing jobs. The Bernanke trillion will go to institutions with debt in other markets and will have no return to economic revitalization of the USA.

Bernanke's only reason for putting forth a trillion US for the global institutions is that it wasn't done during The Great Depression and the lack of monies caused an increase in the contracture for business. That is not the case here. Since the years of the Great Depression, USA businesses and interests have too many tenticles to other markets and foreign lending with obligations outside the USA. The stimulus packages President Obama has put forward including his 2010 budget specifically addresses the revitalization of the USA and its labor force to bring about personal incomes that translate into economic regrowth.

Bernanke is "W"rong and sadly he has no 'idea' for anything different except the lessons of the past which he disregards when it comes to regulation, which the lack of caused these problems in the first place. He needs to be removed from the Fed. There is no predicting his next move and the demise of the USA dollar and vastly increasing debt.

This is profoundly where everything Bernanke is doing falls apart.

President Obama has developed an 'Auto Team' to revitalize the auto industry. In the article below there are guaranteed loans to auto supplier in the amount of $5 billion. Those loan guarantees coming directly from the USA Treasury to banks should not be necessary as the Fed just released an additional trillion US dollar bills to supposedly 'shore up' the banks to they could lend to the auto suppliers and the auto makers. If the suppliers already have made deliveries to the auto makers and are waiting for payment which is slowed by the credit crunch Bernanke's trillion is all that should have to be accessed. The suppliers delivered their product and the automakers have to pay their invoices. Why are there guarantees attached to these monies with a new glut of a trillion US sitting around for the banks to simply pay the suppliers? There are monies available for GM to borrow and it eliminates the need for bailout funds.

Obama administration seeks to guarantee loans in effort to infuse cash to struggling parts makers.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration's effort to aid struggling auto suppliers is focused on a program to provide guarantees for billions of dollars in money owed to parts makers -- a move that could provide them with badly needed cash.
A number of major suppliers are on the brink of bankruptcy in the face of dramatically lower auto production, and the so-called "credit insurance" program, would enable them to borrow from banks based on what they are owed from automakers.
The government would guarantee the payments if the automaker went bankrupt and could not pay the suppliers' bills....

As far as I am concerned this is double dipping. The bailout of any entity, be it auto makers or banks is completely unnecessary with this new glut of monies, UNLESS, one is stating the 'viability / solvency' of these industries is doomed. Is it? Is the future of automakers doomed and therefore bankruptcy is inevitable and they are not credit worthy? Really? Could have fooled me.

Bernanke's actions are meaningless because they don't have 'targets' as do the stimulus or the automaker bailout funds. The monies proposed to rescue the automakers are for the purpose of revitalizing the USA industry. If not, then there is no reason to proceed. In the case of GM, I do believe their direct funding by the bailout will result in USA jobs and a stable auto economy. The monies Bernanke flooded the market with yesterday have no sincere delivery point except banks and it could be any bank funding anyone or any company. His actions make no sense in the face of a bailout for industries sensitive to the USA recovery.

The Obama Administration needs to concentrate on issues of regulation across the spectrum of the cabinet and stop playing with faux monies.

If this administration wants to stop the continually growing 'complications' of Wall Street to the global economic crisis, then dissove the Fed. That would be a good start.
