Trump did nothing to assist the GOP as a party. He simply provided proof that his style of deceit, lying, and showmanship worked to fool Americans and/or recruit them for the wrongful lives they lead. That is the only thing he provided to the Republican Party, besides a disdain for the constitutional government of the USA.
Why would someone facing a federal investigation continue to question authorities as if nothing was wrong. Joel Greenberg already is guilty (click here). There is absolutely no doubt minors were involved with the trip by Gaetz. Being a lawyer for this guy must be at least as bad a nightmare as being one for Trump. He uses his current place in Congress to play up the "Idea" (not the truth) that he is a victim. All these people cannot be victims. That is another "Big Lie."
The bad boys of the GOP don't conduct themselves as if there is some reason to come across as a decent good guy. They go about their lives with abandon because they know their style of deceit, lies, and showmanship works. There are enough people involved from "the street" that they simply supply the tone and tenor to grease the wheels of crooks and liars in the GOP.
I apologize to Director Wray for the chronic brow beating he takes on a regular basis since Trump took office. He doesn't deserve it and like Dr. Fauci is the star performer in the "Big Lie" by the GOP. They need a scapegoat. Most autocrats do.
