The reason the precipitation has become a problem is due to a return of arctic air to the region once the vortex moved offshore. The heat it brought left with it as well. The arctic air simply moved back to replace the departing vortex without much effect on it's temperatures.

The storm system in the northeast USA was brought from the Intertropical Convergence Zone. It was very warm air. It was very wet air. That water vapor was never intended for the USA climate. It was suppose to remain over the tropics under a normal Earth troposphere. It is no longer a normal troposphere and what occurred over New England is a sincere tragedy and emergency for the nation.
The loss of power/electricity during a severe weather event due to the Climate Crisis endangered nearly a half a million people. There is no effective way of handling a half a million people when these systems evolve.
We, as a nation, have to ask ourselves what we are going to do to prevent such electric outages from here forward. There is no exemption from such a storm to repeat itself for the remainder of the winter season in the USA.
The northeast can be facing some of the worst infrastructure insult ever in the history of the USA. This is the 21st Century. There are over 300 million people in this country and the MODERN ERA has never imposed its meaning more than with this storm and Superstorm Sandy.
The USA has to recognize the Climate Crisis and plan for such emergencies and the safety of the citizens of this nation. What has occurred in all these instances is denial of the obvious and the abandonment of the citizens of the USA to receive vital services from their government.
The USA government at all levels has been told over and over and over again about this impending disaster on the country. This is not a surprise to many. The government to date has been negligent of their citizens in preventing these disasters and recognizing them as a Climate Crisis reality to provide planning for them going forward. A planet's climate is not a toy. It should never be pushed to these limits. It is too late to turn back the clock, but, it is not too late to move forward in a meaningful way.
