He has been a long standing member of Gama'a al-Islamiya (IG). He is a very bad man. IG was the largest militant group in Egypt. In the 1990s, IG conducted armed attacks against Egyptian security and other government officials and Coptic Christians. IG claimed responsibility for the June 1995 assassination attempt on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Today they are more loosely associated with 13 members in the Egyptian newly elected parlimentary. If there has been talk of the Shiek's release it would be instigated by these members, more than likely. I sincerely don't believe the President of Egypt has a desire for anything else but peace among the varied members of the government.
