Hot spot: An image taken by an extreme ultraviolet imaging telescope on Wednesday shows a sunspot flare-up on our sun. The solar flare sent a moderate radiation storm towards Earth that may see some satellites experience glitches on Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the United States said. COOPER SPUR, Ore. -- Blizzard conditions on Oregon's Mount Hood have forced a halt to the search for three missing climbers.
Deputy Marc Smith of the Hood River County Sheriff's Office said the seven three-member rescue teams were hit with high winds, ice and blowing snow.
"They're going to regroup, wait for a break in the weather, and then go back up," he said.
One climber made a cell phone call from a snow cave just below the summit Sunday. The other two apparently had been in the cave, but left on Saturday for help.
Smith said the search teams weren't able to get past the 8,500-foot level of the 11,239-foot peak.
The forecast is for up to 18 inches of snow on the mountain.
