NASA and the USA military need to put their heads together to find the common denominator if one exists. I doubt these kidnappings were random.
What were each of the scientists involved in? What impact were their projects having within their agencies? Who were their supervisors? Who would their expertise benefit and why?
Common denominators no matter how trivial. My guess is the information, when compiled into a data base with AI applied would result not only in a recreation of the past, but, a trajectory into the future.

What were any collaborations with communists that might be looking for missing pieces?
