'Sicko' in Top 5 Grossing Docs of All Time -- This Weekend it's "'Sicko' Night in America!"... from Michael Moore
Friends,
Good news! "Sicko," after less than three weeks in national release, has become one of the top five grossing documentaries of all time! So, this coming weekend, the distributor is expanding the movie by opening it in nearly 500 new theaters in small cities all over the country (for a total of nearly 1,200 screens nationwide)! From Rapid City to Carson City, from Gettysburg to Pearl Harbor, from Juneau to Battle Creek -- they're all getting "Sicko" tomorrow (Friday). Scores of cities that never have a documentary come to their local theater will now be able to see this one. It's happening all thanks to you who live in the larger cities and have supported "Sicko" so strongly. It's led the studio to say, "Let's make more prints and ship them to Oshkosh (and Beaverton and Brattleboro and Sault Ste. Marie and...)." The entire country goes "Sicko" in less than 48 hours! (Check here for the complete list of theaters showing "Sicko" in North America.)

Stephen Colbert, Michael Moore unite against CNN 'web of lies'

In the spirit of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," filmmaker Michael Moore joined forces with Stephen Colbert to take on CNN in a segment on The Colbert Report Thursday night.
"Loyal viewers of the Report know there's no love lost between me and CNN. They are worse than the New York Times because I cannot line my birdcage with tapes of the Situation Room. I've tried, it's not absorbent," Colbert said. "But I recently discovered in my disdain for CNN I have a strange bedfellow, Michael Moore, who for the past week has gone toe-to-toe with CNN over the facts of his new healthcare documentary, SiCKO."
Earlier this month, Moore was engaged in a public spat with CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta over a report that claimed the film fudged facts with sloppy reporting. After the report aired, CNN did acknowledge it had made one mistake.
"Wooo! CNN admits it is a web of lies," Colbert said.

Michael Moore makes CNN blush
By Constance Droganes / CTV
After a much publicized tête-à-tête between Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, and the outspoken director of "Sicko," the network released a rare statement of apology. In it they owned up to two errors made while reporting on Moore's new documentary.
On his website on July 17th, the vindicated Moore was pleased about two things. Paris Hilton and her sister passed on clubbing and cruising down the strip to see "Sicko." Second, you guessed it, it was CNN eating crow that finally returned his good humour.
"CNN confirmed that all our statistics in "Sicko" are the correct numbers from the sources we cited," Moore writes. "Although CNN still prefers to use older World Health Organization statistics, we will stick to using this year's Bush administration stats and more recent UN data. (In "Sicko," we consistently use only UN Human Development Statistics unless it's for studies they don't do or have recent numbers for."
Moore gives CNN its due for admitting their two errors. Yet to date the Flint, Michigan native has received no apologies for the other mistakes he believes the network made.
"These days to get the mainstream media to admit they were wrong is rare; to get them to admit it twice, as they have with "Sicko," I guess should be considered a whopping victory."

MY PERSONAL TESTIMONY.
The measures noted below in the article by Elizabeth Cohen work and sometimes they don't.
I tried all this with United Health Care after an accident which resulted in an emergency room visit, surgery, recovery, but a release to home in less than 23 hours.
In the contract with United Health Care, the only cost I was required to pay was a $50.00 co-pay for an ER visit which was defined as any visit to the hospital resulting in a stay of less than 23 hours. United Health Care refused to pay it because of the visit to a surgical suite and the anesthesia. I was mostly recovered following the procedure and able to be safely discharged after only 12 hours.
I had good family support and was not in danger. My health was unremarkable except for this accident. In sending me home, the doctors and hospital were practicing under the principle that people are safer when the visit to the hospital is short with less exposure to 'hospital acquired infection' and that patients heal quicker when provided adequate pain relief to heal at home in familiar circumstances with the support of people that love them. It's a valid practice of modern medicine. This decision wasn't just a cost saving measure, although it was, but there was absolutely no reason for me to stay when I could heal equally as well or better at home with physician office follow up visits. Just that simple.
After six months of letters, doctors letters and all kinds of advocacy by my MDs, short of a lawyer's letter, I sent a letter to the State Attorney General's Office stipulating breach of contract. Six months of letter writing, calls and time wasted. I sent a copy of the letter to the insurance company and before the Attorney General could put a Docket Number on it; the ENTIRE cost was paid except the $50.00 to the hospital. I and my doctors wasted nearly five months after the accident and their intervention to save my life which included sewing an artery back to together when all we needed to do was 'simply' report a letter of refusal of service spelled out clearly in my contract to the AG's office. The complaint letter never got passed having a docket number assigned before it was paid.
It was amazing to realize United Health Care KNEW they were wrong and were simply willing to bully me and the physicians, anesthesiologists, ambulance service and hospital around so they could enlarge their profit margin. I mean as soon as my letter hit the mail room at their corporate office the bills were paid.
Why did I have to go through that? Why did my government have to go through that? And if that is the kind of expense my government has to sustain in order to receive services for an emergency procedure, CLEARLY covered in my contract, why bother at all and let the government handle it from the beginning.
What if for some reason the hospital decided to 'clear the claim' BEFORE they saved my life, as the ambulance was delivering me to the emergency room and they were refused reimbursement? What then? Leave me to die? Dump me in the nearest ghetto? Do you how close I came to 'death by insurance carrier?' No, no. We don't do this to ourselves anymore. Absolutely not and anyone and I do mean anyone willing to oppose this much needed change in American healthcare is simply a greed mongering idiot with no compassion for their fellow human beings. Not any more. Americans can do better than this.
Do we all want that 'chanciness' from our health care system? The healthcare system is BROKEN. Broken Big Time. It endangers our lives everyday and insults our physicians and hospitals with challenges the cause our cost of health care to skyrocket. My physicians 'employ' a special secretary to pursue health care companies to insure they get their payments. Huh? That isn't increasing the cost of my healthcare? You betcha it does. That isn't increasing a burden to my health care providers in receiving what is rightfully theirs? You betcha it does. And all that doesn't cause tension in the doctor - patient relationship? You can count on it.
We need to dump the private insurance system we have now, AND NOT THE PATIENTS, and institute a single payer system that doesn't burden recipients of care with an ADDITIONAL stress to their healing. We just need to do this and as soon as possible. People in the USA are dying because of private insurance carriers. It's outrageous and should not be tolerated anymore. Americans have to make up their minds they are important, their children and their children's children are important and get rid of the current healthcare system. Believe me it will unburden this country of expense in a way no can realize. We all need to make a commitment to a healthy nation and to each other.
End of discussion.
Tips to effectively battle your insurance company
Story Highlights
To fight an insurance denial, enlist doctor, hospital business office, employer
Use specific language focused on medical issues, not self-esteem, appearance
Don't hesitate to appeal multiple times
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Todd Robinson doesn't need Michael Moore to tell him the health insurance system in the United States is in crisis.
Robinson's 7-year-old son, Bailey, suffered from adrenoleukodystrophy, a rare genetic disorder affecting the brain, portrayed in the movie "Lorenzo's Oil."
The Robinsons say their insurance company refused to pay for $200,000 worth of medical bills. The company stamped "denied" on bill after bill, refusing to pay for countless medical services right up until the day Bailey died in 2005.
The Robinsons are not alone. Tales of frustration with insurers abound. In an Internet survey that included 1,000 consumers, nearly one out of four said he or she had had a legitimate claim denied by their health insurance, according to PNC Financial Services Group.
"I don't make a lot of money," says Robinson, a paramedic. "There's no way I could pay $200,000 out of my pocket."

Hinchey Says Holt Election Bill 'Has Been Compromised,' Says This Administration 'Most Impeachable in History of Our Country'
New York Congressman Has 'Very Serious Questions' About Election Bill, Says Bush and Cheney 'Have Violated Federal Laws in Criminal Ways'...
Blogged by Brad Friedman from Houston…
Radio host Peter B. Collins has been earning his keep of late. On his last show before a three-week Summer vacation today (we will be filling in to Guest Host for him for the next week and a half), Collins finished up a segment with Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today concerning his efforts to renew the Fairness Doctrine with two quick, unrelated questions.
First, Collins asked whether the Congressman supported the controversial Rush Holt Election Reform Bill (HR 811) "in it's current form." The legislation has come under fire from Election Integrity advocates for its continued allowance of the use of dangerous DRE touch-screen voting machines, and a host of other concerns.
Hinchey --- who is currently signed on as one of the bill's co-sponsors --- responded by saying he had "some very serious questions about it" and feels that "it has been compromised."

ACLU decries action taken on July Fourth at Byrd Park event
By Joe Macenka / Richmond Times-Dispatch
Richmond police and parks officials are in trouble with the ACLU of Virginia for removing a woman from a Fourth of July event in Byrd Park for carrying a political banner.
Rain Burroughs, who said she was driven to a different area of the sprawling park and held in a police cruiser with her 7-yearold daughter until the fireworks display ended, was not charged with any crime.
Police said they removed her from the Dogwood Dell area at the request of city parks employees. A parks official said the banner, which made an indirect reference to the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney, disrupted the patriotic theme of the concert at Dogwood Dell and the fireworks.

Uninsured need attention, too
The plight of insured Americans in 'Sicko' is frightening, but for the millions uncovered, the lack may be deadly
By Jeanne D'Esposito for Newsday
At the beginning of the film "Sicko," we see one man giving himself stitches and another explaining he lost two fingers in an accident but could afford to have only one reattached.
Michael Moore tells viewers that his movie isn't about these men or the other 47 million Americans who don't have health insurance. The movie focuses instead on stories about "the rest of us," the 250 million Americans who have insurance, but who are all too often denied proper medical care.
Many Americans were wary of Hillary Rodham Clinton's efforts to reform U.S. health care during her husband's presidency, largely because powerful lobbying interests persuaded them that "socialized" health care would threaten their access to quality medical care. Fifteen years later, Moore deftly demonstrates that we were misled by those who care more about keeping the profits rolling in than about providing health care to all Americans.
But what about those 47 million uninsured and their stories?

Go See the Movie First, Please!
By Larry Smith, American 'SiCKO'
In recent weeks, I have grown weary of listening to one group of health care reform naysayers in particular. I can handle all the goofs who see 'SiCKO' and just don't quite get it yet. Most of the time that's the young folks who haven't gotten sick or needed to use their insurance yet. I forgive their youthfulness and that sense of immortality.
The people who annoy me are those who haven't even seen the movie and who recoil when asked if they have. Some are religious zealots who think Michael Moore is a communist, America-hating fellow. I don't know where they get that sort of thinking, but most of what they say sounds sort of pre-programmed or scripted. It scares me a little. Brainwashed people are not free people.

The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On
This absorbing documentary follows Kenzo Okuzaki--a veteran of Japan's WWII campaign in New Guinea--as he searches out those responsible for the mysterious deaths of several soldiers in his unit. Though he holds Emperor Hirahito accountable for all the suffering caused by WWII, he painstakingly tracks down former military officers and accuses them of specific war crimes, often times abusing them verbally and physically. Director Kazua Hara's subtle cinema verite not only captures the zeal of Okuzaki's lifelong mission, but also exposes the atrocities committed by the Japanese military against its own soldiers. The film created such controversy in Japan upon release that no major distributor would touch it. "The most amazing piece of filmmaking" (Michael Moore). Winner of the Caligari Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival. In Japanese with English subtitles.

Bush hits new low in N.H.
Associated Press
President Bush's job approval rating in New Hampshire hit a low for his presidency -- 24 percent -- in a poll released Wednesday.
Seventy-two percent of those polled disapproved of Bush's performance in the University of New Hampshire poll for CNN and WMUR-TV.
"Republicans are still modestly supporting Bush," said poll director Andrew Smith. "But there has to be real concern among Republicans that animosity toward Bush will drag down other Republicans, such as Sen. John Sununu, in 2008."
The telephone poll of 524 adults was conducted July 9 through Tuesday. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
It comes three days after a Research 2000 poll for the Concord Monitor in which 28 percent of 600 regular voters rated Bush's job performance good or better. That poll, conducted July 9-11, had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

FOX AND CNN hit an all time low; they are making a 'big deal' out of the low job approval rating of this Congress.
Stop right there.
Overall, the job approval rating of this Senate and House EXCEEDS any approval rating since September 2005. Who is kidding whom here? And if one goes back over the entire Bush Administration, these are the highest approval ratings since immediately after September 11, 2001 when the nation was gripped with fear and uncertainty. And we all know what happened because of over confidence in a corrupt White House and Legislature.

Well, lookey thar! And what was the point FOX (The wannabe new owner of The Wall Street Journal) and CNN (The current owner of Time Magazine) were trying to make exactly?
Give me a break. Who do you trust? We aren't going to play their stupid game with our children's future anymore. We aren't going to do that. Make personal affirmations statements to yourself to be sure this level of 'control' over the electorate never happens again. "We need a new America." Just say it over and over again as you go to the polls and don't let anyone derail the 'idea' of having a safe and healthy America ever again. We have a RIGHT to our wellness in this country and we all need to affirm that belief in our vocabulary in every dealing within our society.
"We need a new America."
"We need a new America."
"We need a new America."
Moral and free of the encumbrances of the corrupt and draconian corporations that line the halls of Congress with their lobbyists. Just that simple. We are not going to accept corruption anymore. Do you realize the change in government that will occur? Today, the 'best' of intentions require paid lobbyists in order 'to be heard' in DC. We can't get out of the war in Iraq without the American people hiring lobbyists to demand that with 'incentives' for legislators to back the measures by the current House and Senate. That isn't government of, by and for the people. That is a government taken hostage away from the electorate at all levels.
No more.
We need people elected to office that can operate without the influence of lobbyists.
No more.
We take back America and return it's ability to function in the best interest of the country.
No doubt in my mind.
Never has been any doubt. Maybe because I know the hopelessness of the environmental lobby trying to deal with this administration and Republican War Congress. It's terrible to try to influence good legislation in DC. Nearly impossible unless 'incentives' are provided to that influence and one represents huge payoffs on Wall Street for the Republicans. If stopping Human Induced Global Warming had stockholder profits attached to it there would never be an issue in the first place. We are not going to do this to ourselves anymore.
Every moral venue in the USA is blunted by the lack of profitability.
The USA and it's 'free enterprise system' is literally handed over to corporations that harm lives daily rather than care for them. It's an unbelievable reality to consider once exposed to it. Michael Moore knows of what he speaks and it DOES take an independent filmmaker to achieve awareness. We need to conduct our votes with more self interest and untangle our economic burden of corporations with draconian profit margins.
Oh, by the way, a strong leadership makes a difference. I was more than pleased that Senator Hillary Clinton was looking very presidential in demanding an alternative strategy to the Iraq War which was to include redeployment of our troops out of that country in a contingency plan in case there was trouble elsewhere in the world that demanded USA troops. THAT reality hadn't even occurred to Bush and is why Afghanistan is experiencing such a strong resurgence of the Taliban and increased danger to allies attempting to 'hold the line.' THE VERY REALITY that our troops might be needed elsewhere in the world, in a higher priority than Iraq, was NEVER a priority to the Bush/Cheney administration. It was to Hillary and it was a 'new resolve' I noted with the lady Senator this past week. She must know something we don't. Acting on a new 'intelligence estimate' perhaps? Think about it. Who do you want protecting your country. A set of profiteers or REAL leadership.
She only asked for a legitimate contingency plan. It wasn't done yet and then when asked for was 'billed' to the public as a political tool. I don't think so. A contingency plan to insure the safety of the USA should have been 'in play' the entire time. Literally, the USA military upto now, was mired in Iraq without an exit strategy or an emergency evacuation or redeployment. Like what? It is a 'contingency' plan. That's all. Not a demand for any change in strategy, but, ONLY a contingency plan.
Hello, America?

'SiCKO' Unleashes a New Fight
From The Kansas City Channel:
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The widow of a man who lost his battle with kidney cancer and his health-care provider is taking that fight to a larger stage.
Tracy Pierce died in February 2006. His family said his battle to beat cancer was not a fair fight because despite being fully insured, Pierce's insurance provider refused to pay for many of the treatments prescribed by his doctor, saying they were experimental or not a medical necessity. In the end, Pierce's family called it "death by denial."
"I just can't believe you've got this insurance company that's just willing to let you die," said Tracy Pierce's wife, Julie.
KMBC's Jim Flink started following Tracy Pierce's story two years ago, documenting Pierce's fight against kidney cancer and against an insurance provider, which rejected many of the treatments Pierce's doctor requested.

STATEMENT BY JULIE PIERCE
BEFORE THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
June 20, 2007
Tracy Pierce died on January 18, 2006, at home after a courageous battle with kidney cancer. Tracy was a 37-year-old African American man from Mission, Kansas, a Journeyman Carpenter with Local #61 in Kansas City . He was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma in 2004. The cancer eventually spread to his liver, lungs, lymph nodes, adrenal gland, renal cavity and his brain. Tracy Pierce was the father of a 15-year-old boy, a brother, a son, a friend and he was my husband.
On April 10, 2004, one day before his 36th birthday, Tracy was sent to the emergency room for an MRI after an appointment with our family physician. Our worst fears began that day and the nightmare only got worse. The MRI showed a massive mass on his left kidney which needed to be surgically removed immediately. Five days later, Tracy had surgery that was followed by complications that kept him in the hospital until May 12.

FIGHTING FOR OUR LIVES. These people are fighting for their lives AGAINST corporations and/or lack of healthcare. Is everyone 'getting this' yet? Appeals for help from communities? We have to rely on community donations for 'adequate' healthcare. I don't consider a fight for one's life in the face of cancer an issue for debate, unless, people are debating with their own decisions regarding therapy. Donations. Lives have to rely on donations? Tax exempt donations, too. Come on already. Simply because it 'isn't you' yet is no reason to look the other way. This isn't the USA I was raised in.

"Give War a Chance" ...by Cindy Sheehan
Journey for Humanity and Accountability - Day 9
Being in the deep south has been a very interesting experience. As George's approval numbers hover down somewhere in Congress's range and approval for their war is shrinking, we have encountered very little opposition to our message, but the opposition we have encountered has been vile, abusive and potentially dangerous.
In Houston, one of the more active kingdoms of war profiteering, we encountered no protest. As a matter of fact, while we were stationed on a bridge over I-10 holding our "Impeach Bush and Cheney" and "Troops home now" signs, we had almost 100% approval. People were actually stopping their cars to applaud us and in some cases, join us.

Anti-war grandmothers throughout the United States are very discouraged lately about the chances of ending the war and bringing home America's grandchildren WHILE WE ARE STILL HERE. We wonder what's the matter with those schlemiehls in the Congress, anyhow, that they sit on their tushes and allow our kids to be cut down just as they are at the brink of their lives -- for no noble cause other than the delusions and egomania of the worst President in our lifetimes.

Please help make Pat's dream come true!
Pat’s original goal was to add 2007 new donors to the National Marrow Registry in 2007 but has now set his sights on 5000 donors, and with your help he can make it!
Hi, My name is Pat! I am 11 years old and I have Leukemia. Can you please help me save the lives of people who need a bone marrow transplant?
Recently, someone I knew died from Leukemia after they were unable to find a matching bone marrow donor. I found out that there is a critical need for people to be added to the National Marrow Registry, especially minorities! I was scared that one day I may need a bone marrow transplant and may not be able to find a matching donor. That day I decided to do something to help and the idea of ONE CHILD'S DREAM / DRIVING FOR DONORS was born.

Friday, July 20, 2007: The day began in chaos then gradually smoothed to a rich and productive finish. By the time I made it into Richmond we had a good cell phone signal - and all of a sudden I got a message on my phone that said I had 19 voice mails! So I started listening to them and they were from as far back as two weeks ago. I don't know what is happening with our cellular communications, but this is the second time I've had this. Folks, I want you to all know that if I haven't replied to your call, it's because I never even knew it was there. I had no indication at all that I had any messages waiting out there until this morning.

We know this is correct as well. There were over one million dead in Vietnam. Now in the year 2007, we know the number is at least this much. Easily, the killing machines in Iraq murder at least 200 people per USA soldier dead. That includes every aspect of the killing. The USA is the impetus to the killing. It's easily a 200 to 1 ratio. We see those death rates every other day in Iraq.
And will someone please tell me where all of a sudden the USA military has 'accurate' death counts of Iraqi civilians?
That astounded me recently. The USA military is stating the death rates of Iraqis have come down remarkably SINCE LAST YEAR due to 'the surge.' Where does that come from, because, ANY Iraqi ministry is stating 'at least' 250,000 dead so far in the war AND a year ago Don Rumsfeld was stating he had no idea to the number of Iraqi civilians dead. So…like…all of a sudden Pace and his generals have all these ACCURATE figures. I don't think so. Liars all ! Contingency plan, please, and no questions asked. Thank you.
