Update 7:50 p.m. EDT Aug. 13: Fred remained a tropical depression (click here) and is dumping heavy rains across the central coast of Cuba as it moves toward the Florida peninsula, the National Hurricane Center said in its 8 p.m. EDT intermediate advisory.
A tropical storm warning remains in effect for the Florida Keys from Ocean Reef to the Dry Tortugas including Florida Bay, and a tropical storm watch was still in effect on Florida’s southwest coast from Bonita Beach and south and east to Ocean Reef.
Warnings could be extended on the west coast of Florida late Friday or early Saturday, the hurricane center said.
The depression, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, was located 175 miles east-southeast of Key West, Florida, and 45 miles west of Caibarien, Cuba, the hurricane center said.
The storm was moving to the west at 12 mph, and the hurricane center said Fred could regain tropical storm strength sometime Saturday....
