US Troops Battle Insurgents East of Baghdad

U.S. Marine Killed in Action West of Baghdad

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.S. Marine was killed in action on Monday in Iraq's volatile Anbar province west of Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.
In a statement, the military said only that the Marine was killed by "an explosion which occurred during combat operations."
The killing raised to 1,168 the number of U.S. military and Pentagon personnel killed in action in Iraq. Including non-combat deaths, the toll is 1,536.

Drenching rain floods Delaware River

EASTON, Pa. -- After the remnants of Hurricane Ivan filled their little ranch house with several feet of water, Dale and Charlotte Barr spent $40,000 to get it back in shape.
They were just about to tackle the last room -- the kitchen -- when the Delaware River overflowed its banks again this weekend.
"We're tired," said Dale Barr on Monday. "I'm 65 years old. I can't continue to do this every six months."

Nias quake toll climbs to 2,500
Indonesian authorities say more than 2,500 people were killed in last week's earthquake on the Indonesian island of Nias.
More than 500 bodies have been recovered, while a further two thousand people are missing and now presumed dead.
The assessment was made after a village-by-village survey by the Indonesian armed forces.
Heavy lifting equipment is still being brought to the island to lift rubble and debris from the scene of collapsed buildings.
