Romney was not disciplined at the time. If such an attack happened in the public schools of 2012, it would probably lead to suspension and might also be referred for expulsion, a number of local public school leaders said following a Washington Post report of the incident involving Romney...

At the Guatemalan site (click here)  in 2010 the Boston University archaeologist and Ph.D. student Franco Rossi were inspecting a looters' tunnel, where an undergraduate student had noticed the faintest traces of paint on a thin stucco wall.

The pair began cleaning off 1,200-year-old mud and suddenly a little more red paint appeared.

"Suddenly Bill was like, 'Oh my God, we have a glyph!'" Rossi said.

What the team found, after a full excavation in 2011, is likely the ancient workroom of a Maya scribe, a record-keeper of Xultún.

"The reason this room's so interesting," said Rossi, as he crouched in the chamber late last year, "is that ... this was a workspace. People were seated on this bench" painting books that have long since disintegrated.

The books would have been filled with elaborate calculations intended to predict the city's fortunes. The numbers on the wall were "fixed tabulations that they can then refer to—tables more or less like those in the back of your chemistry book," he added.

"Undoubtedly this type of room exists at every Maya site in the Late Classic [period] and probably earlier, but it's our only example thus far."...

(AP) OSLO, Norway - The trial of Anders Behring (click here) Breivik was interrupted briefly Friday when the brother of one of his 77 victims hurled a shoe at the confessed mass killer and yelled, "Go to hell," before being escorted from the court room, police and witnesses said.

It was the first outburst from the normally subdued crowd watching the terror trial in Oslo's district court since the proceedings began in mid-April.

Breivik — a self-styled anti-Muslim militant — has been charged with terrorism, admitting he carried out a bomb-and-shooting rampage that stunned Norway on July 22....

Is prevention the final cure for HIV?

A panel of US health experts (click here for video) has for the first time backed a drug to prevent HIV infection in healthy people.

The panel recommended US regulators approve the daily pill, Truvada, for use by people considered at high risk of contracting the Aids virus.

Dr Robert Grant, from Gladstone Institutes, said regular use of the drug made protection from HIV infection much higher.

An ounce of prevention is worth...lives saved, quality of life insured and savings in the billions $US of treatment, there is no cure.

The period of acute HIV infection (AHI) (click here) is a relatively brief window of time -- roughly 10 weeks after initial infection -- but its impact on the spread of HIV may be very significant. During this early period, which likely continues through the first six months of infection, that people are considerably more infectious to others than at other stages of infection. 

Elitism

I look at it this way, if every woman (SEXISM) quits their job and is assured of a secure marriage to raise their children the job market for men would improve, provided they are qualified enough. Romney has a point there. He could grow his economy on the backs of the elite and it might work after all.

The woman will receive just compensation for years without income during her parenting years until the graduation from doctorial school of the children, while undergoing rehabilitation of her career. Two weeks ago Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney found himself facing accusations of elitism – not to mention no small amount of ridicule – when he suggested one of the first steps to take on one’s way to finding the American dream of monetary success was to borrow money from the First National Bank of Mom and/or Dad. “We’ve always encouraged young people: Take a shot, go for it. Take a risk. Get the education. Borrow money if you have to from your parents. Start a business,” Romney said to students at Otterbein University in Ohio.

Ha. Ha. According to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, the average Baby Boomer with less than ten years to go till retirement has a grand total of $78,000 saved up for their golden years. A third have $25,000 or less. This crowd can’t even afford to send their children to college without resorting to student loan industrial complex, never mind funding a start-up. Telling the kids to borrow from mom and dad is parenting advice for the one percent and Romney rightly got called on it.

But when Dr. William Sears, the guru of attachment parenting, says the same thing as Romney, we are, apparently, too distracted by a mammary gland and our never-ending debate over what makes a good mom to notice. According to Pickert, Sears proposes, “mothers quit their jobs and borrow money” to afford to carry out his recommendations. On the plus side, Sears is not a hypocrite. He and his wife “subsidized” his sons’ families so the moms could practice attachment parenting. “It was the least we could do,” Martha Sears told Time....

The girls don't have a mother, but, they are alive. She must have fought him.

UNION COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) — Union County Sheriff (click here) Jimmy Edwards has confirmed that Adam Mayes has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head shortly after being found.

Union County Coroner Mark Golding says the suspect died at 8:20 pm at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County from the injury.

Edwards said Mayes was in critical condition when police found him in the vicinity of the church, according to reporter Justin Lewis.

The body is being taken to Jackson for an autopsy.

Both men say that the two young girls—12-year-old Alexandria Bain and 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain—are alive....

JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in the U.S., (click here) said Thursday that it lost $2 billion in a trading portfolio designed to hedge against risks the company takes with its own money.

The company's stock plunged more than 5% in late electronic trading after the loss was announced.

Other bank stocks, including Citigroup and Bank of America, suffered heavy losses as well.

"The portfolio has proved to be riskier, more volatile and less effective as an economic hedge than we thought," CEO Jamie Dimon told reporters. "There were many errors, sloppiness and bad judgment."

The chief investment office has been transformed in recent years under Dimon into a unit that makes bigger and riskier speculative bets with the bank's money, according to five former employees, Bloomberg News reported April 13.

Some bets were so big that JPMorgan probably couldn't unwind them without losing money or roiling financial markets, the former executives said.

The trading loss is an embarrassment for a bank that came through the 2008 financial crisis in much better health than its peers. It kept clear of risky investments that hurt most of its peers….

The Dow closed up though, 12,855.04 +19.98 (0.16%).

The global markets haven't held up

ANZ global head of FX strategy Richard Yetsenga said the Chinese economic data pummelled the Aussie dollar this afternoon. “Everything was weak,” he said.

Mr Yetsenga said that in the current climate scheduled economic data is not the biggest risk for the dollar but rather unscheduled events.

“In Spain, there is the possible bank recapitalisation package,” he said. “The issue there is - will the market assess that Spain has actually realised big enough losses (with its banks)?” That is due to be released later today, Spain time.

"The second issue is what’s going on with Greece? Will the coalition government be formed or not."

Should the dollar fall under parity with the greenback - where there is a lot of support - it would likely have a “big move down,” Mr Yetsenga said. He declined, though, to have a punt on how far it might sink….

The USA is very resistant to allow its women and minorities a place as equals.

This is Betty Friedan with a copy of the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA had been introduced to Congress from 1923 to 1972. In 1972 it passed the Congress and went to the states for ratification. The ERA did not achieve the status as an amendment to the USA Constitution which would have provided women all the rights as men. It would have settled much of what is happening in the regressive agenda of the GOP.


I don't want to thwart enthusiasm for any movement, but, for a very strange reason, the country is not relating to the rights of all persons under the USA Constitution as it should and it hasn't for a long time.


Maybe it is time for the people of the USA to move forward to make all citizens equal under the law, but, I still sense a lethargy to that goal. There were many reasons why the ERA failed, but, it all surrounded social politics. Those women most resistance to change stated things like, "Our daughters will be on the battlefields," "The heart of the family will be lost to work and mothers will not have the right to be mothers." It was a lot of nonsense, but, to 'enough' citizens it was important to uphold the STATUS QUO. Times were different then, but, not to different to believe any attempt to 'try again' might fail as well.


An amendment proposed to make all citizens equal under the law regardless of their minority status would have a difficult time in ratification even if it were passed by Congress. That is playing out in the states where extremist right wing Republicans are still trying to outlaw income equality, marriage equality and women's rights to contraception and abortion. The Right Wing Republicans are attempting with no veiled threat to have their way with this country and declare it a "Christian Country." 


They have money and power and they will not be deterred. I keep hearing how the elections of 2012 is the most important election in the history of the country. Those words are emphasized by the Political Right Wing of the country. They want to convince the electorate that Democrats are 'tax and spend' and negligent of the National Debt, but, that isn't their sincere cause. Yes, that is all important to them, but, it is important to most Americans. Fiscal responsibility is very important to all Americans. 

But, the demonization of the Democrats this election carries a special meaning to the GOP Right Wing. It could mean they will not be able to carry out their agenda to further their social agenda. They have held the line for a long time with people like Phyllis Schlafly.


The people that comprise this Right Wing also have a lot financially riding on their 'stagnant' economy. They want to maintain the world 'as it is' because that is where they make their money. They have a vested interest in 'remaining the same' and upholding 'old, tired values' that don't work in the year 2012. 


There needs to be an amendment to end the 'social wedge issues' to stop the victimization of minorities and women. I simply question the will of the country. It seems so hideous to believe there are second and third class citizens in the USA that have to remain that way forever. At some point in time the people of this country have to find the collective will to provide equal standing to all. I just don't know when that is going to happen, if ever.  Maybe, when we finally have a woman President. It would be a travesty to realize a woman is capable of the Presidency without having the right to her own self-will and determination under the law.

Obama threatens to veto Republican's shield of defense cuts (click here)

WASHINGTON, May 9 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama threatened on Wednesday to veto a Republican bill that would partially replace looming automatic budget cuts and protect military spending at the expense of food stamps and other social programs.

The White House said in a statement that the cuts proposed by Republicans would "cost jobs and hurt middle-class and vulnerable Americans - especially seniors, veterans and children."

"The bill's unbalanced provisions fail the test of fairness and shared responsibility," the White House added.

The veto threat escalates one of several new budget battles that have broken out this spring in Washington....

Job Growth. The man in the White House knows what he is doing. He will get us there.

Employers in the United States were looking to fill more jobs (click here) in March than at any time in almost four years, showing growing confidence in the U.S. economy.

The number of open positions increased by 172,000 to 3.74 million, the most since July 2008, from a revised 3.57 million the prior month that was larger than previously estimated, the Labor Department said Tuesday. Another report showed small companies were more optimistic on their outlook.

More vacancies are a sign American companies were looking to expand at the end of the first quarter, undaunted by the jump in fuel costs or concerns that global economic growth will slow. The pickup is a "positive" development after a report last week showed payrolls in April grew at the slowest pace in six months, said economist Lou Crandall....

Self-explanatory

President Obama has never been a liar.

...Obama told ABC's Robin Roberts Wednesday: (click here)  "Over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."...


I remember when the observation was made the polling places listed him as "Barack Hussein Obama" and it would taint the vote. That was inaccurate. President Obama never denies his heritage or any aspect of his personal beliefs. He is who he is and that will never change.


I am hearing how his personal views will be exploited for political purposes and it will be the pulpit in churches that will wield power. Well, since when is that new? His birth place has been under attack and still is. The GOP Right Wing is determined and desperate to exploit every aspect of negativity to win. 


The President is not without his church supporters either. He has a religious following in many communities across this country, so the idea that preachers could dictate elections is an interesting idea. To begin non-profits should not be involved in politics as a 501(c)3, but, if preachers dominate the elections in the USA then we are a theocracy and not a democracy.


Separation of church and state is important. It is important to provide freedom to everyone without oppressing anyone. Churches are allowed their doctrines and they stand regardless of Same Sex Marriage in states like Massachusetts. 


There are many states providing marriage to Same Sex Couples and supporting their families with the need for health insurance coverage and equal treatment under the law as heterosexual couples. The statement by President Obama is not all that unusual or extreme. There are many mainstream ideas incorporating the definition of family to include married partners of the same sex. He is a young man with young mainstream ideas. He has a right to his personal beliefs. It is admirable he is willing to speak so freely about his personal views. Very admirable. It really doesn't do anything to policy. This is still a states rights issue.

The planet 55 Cancri e (click here) was first discovered in 2004 and is not a habitable world. Instead, it is known as a super-Earth because of its size: The world is about twice the width of Earth and is super-dense, with about eight times the mass of Earth....

But that world was "hot Jupiter," a gas giant planet much larger than 55 Cancri e that orbited extremely close to its parent star. While other telescopes have performed similar feats since then, Spitzer's view of the 55 Cancri e is the first time the light from a rocky super-Earth type planet has been seen, researchers said....

These telescopes operate above Earth's atmosphere to eliminate gases that distort the view of space from Earth's surface. All to often we take our technology for granted and while this seems like 'just another pretty picture' of outer space, one has to realize the accomplishment of the scientists involved to provide these images. Controlling the view of such photos is really an accomplishment.

"This is the Grover Norquist Congress"

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) (click title to entry - thank you) on Wednesday criticized Republicans in a 20-minute floor speech for blocking any bipartisan agreement on deficit reduction for the last several years, which he said was due in large part to their allegiance to Grover Norquist.

"John Boehner could never go against Grover," Reid said. "Grover Norquist. This is the 'Grover Norquist Congress,' because Republicans shake in their boots."...

Yesterday, the USA Senate Republicans, including Scott Brown filibustered the vote to maintain student loan rates.

...On a related point, (click here) Reid also criticized Republicans for trying to backtrack on the agreement both sides were finally able to reach last year to cut the deficit, which calls for $1.2 trillion in cuts to defense and social programs.

"The House is doing everything they can to walk away from the agreement that we made, the bipartisan vote that we took," Reid said. "They're doing everything that they can....

Norquist believes the GOP simply needs a President elected that believes in the anarchy of the Right Wing. No one else in the country matters, only the Norquist agenda is pertinent to the outcomes of the people of the USA. Anarchists. Unfortunately, a nation of people and a US Constitution stand in their way.

"All we have to do is replace Obama. ...  We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don't need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget. ... We just need a president to sign this stuff....Pick a Republican with enough working digits to handle a pen to become president of the United States. This is a change for Republicans: the House and Senate doing the work with the president signing bills. His job is to be captain of the team, to sign the legislation that has already been prepared."


Mitt Romney fits the requirements, willing to do anything to be President with fingers that function to specifications.

"I am not going to need to call Timothy Geithner...in the case for Europe right now...that is a decision I would like to have input on...

Which ever way the wind blows, Mitt. Timothy Geithner has proven himself to be a friend of the Middle Class and repeatedly has been a force to contend with in a House of Representatives that can't tie their shoe laces. There is absolutely no way any President can provide complete focus to every problem the USA faces and for anyone to state so, is a liar.

...On June 1, 2009, General Motors filed for bankruptcy, (click here) backed by $30 billion in support from the federal government. The same day, in the same New York courthouse, a judge approved Chrysler’s plan to forge an alliance with Fiat and emerge from bankruptcy as a restructured business with an uncertain future.

Two years later, all three American automakers have returned to profitability, the industry has added new shifts and 115,000 jobs, and GM and Chrysler have returned more than 50 percent of the government’s investment. The industry is mounting one of the most improbable turnarounds in recent history.

This outcome was anything but assured. In December 2008, the industry faced the prospect of uncontrolled liquidations just as our financial system was reeling from the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. President George W. Bush provided more than $17 billion in temporary loans to GM and Chrysler to avert that disaster, but those efforts, while important, were not enough. President Obama took office faced with an industry that was burning and had to determine whether additional government support made sense.

In a series of meetings in early 2009, the administration’s autos team sought to examine an interwoven web of options and to highlight the risks each entailed. The companies needed to make dramatic changes. Years of bad decisions had caused them to progressively lose market share to foreign competitors, and the financial crisis had dried up financing for almost everything, compounding the collapse in demand for vehicles. It was not clear whether there was a responsible way to put taxpayer dollars on the line in a way that helped ensure the companies emerged stronger, not weaker....


Representative Barney Frank recently revealed the ability of Romney to lie on nearly every issue before the electorate.

And finally I have to ask you about the Presidential race. (click here) Of course you’ve seen Mitt Romney first hand, he was governor of your state.  What are your thoughts on the Republican race?

Well, any gay or lesbian person with any self-respect should not be voting for any of the Republicans, including Mitt Romney, who made the degrading comment in one of the recent debates about how he kept Massachusetts from being the Las Vegas of gay marriage, kind of cheapening this very profound thing for us.

This is a faker who in 1994, when he was trying to beat Ted Kennedy in a different era, said “Oh, I’ll be better than him on gay rights,” and of course he’s been outrageous.  In fact in 2004, when the Massachusetts Supreme Court had ruled in favor of gay rights, there was an effort in the State Legislature to overturn it.  Mitt Romney led a fight against a whole lot of legislators who had courageously voted with us to uphold gay marriage, and he tried very hard to defeat them....

Angela Merkel over reacted to the Greek elections.

She stated Greece has to live up to their obligations under austerity loans.


The Greek government wasn't overthrown, there is only a new President.


This means the new President can prioritize the financial structure within the country under the loan provisions. I do believe the loan agreement was voted on by a legislative body not just signed by the President.

New Democracy leader (click here) Antonis Samaras began trying to put together a government after a Greek election that raised fresh questions about the country’s euro membership and triggered the biggest stock-market drop in six months.

Samaras was given three days from today to put together a coalition from an assembly split down the middle on whether to renege on the terms of bailout agreements negotiated since May 2010....

Honestly.  She acts as though there was an invasion.

...The rally (click here) seems to have consisted of right-wing politicians spewing one distortion after another about the Walker administration’s policies and their opponents’ intentions. The interviews with the audience members unfortunately show a typical “tea party” misunderstanding of the issues, and that Republicans’ talking points about collective bargaining and teachers’ health benefits have taken root with at least the party’s avid supporters....

For an appearance by a Lt. Governor, there was not a large crowd.

I always considered political courage to be standing up for individual rights. It is far more difficult to achieve political change through peaceful courage then it is to destroy the process that provides that OPPORTUNITY.


It is nearly laughable to hear people state, "I have to pay for mine." in regard to benefit costs in the private sector. Does the woman who said that realize what the profit margin is for her private employer that has no problem with her paying for her benefits? That is ridiculous and oppresses the American economy. The money she is paying for benefits could be going to her children's or grandchildren's education fund rather than stockholder profits. The profits on Wall Street these days is exploitative for the very reason she states.


Wouldn't it be great if all of government were privatized and everyone had to pay for their own benefits while receiving bargain basement services.

Poverty in any country is not simply a sad condition of the people it is a national security issue of any other nation. Changing that 'condition' is more difficult today with the Climate Crisis. Drought globally is effecting farming and agrarian lives are frequently one of choice during impoverishment.


I don't recall Wall Street doing anything about global poverty either. Wall Street's methodology is to give large sums of money to police enforcement in civilized nations to control demonstrators. Wall Street spends its money on making more money and laying communication cables across ocean floors. If I am not mistaken, a super fast communication cable, once hacked into, actually facilitates these global criminals. Ah, yes, all in the names of progress. Everyone's progress, it would seem.

The cartridge bomb plot followed in 2010.
