BAGHDAD -- The setting could as easily have been the new Iraqi parliament: Tribal sheikhs yelled at men with ties to insurgents; Shia representatives were shouted down when they tried to speak.
The event took place at a private meeting in the swankiest of former president Saddam Hussein's guesthouses. The new "dialogue council" was called by Sunni Muslims to try and come to some agreement about how they could get involved in government.

CAIRO -- Romanians were in a state of shock on Thursday after Qatar-based TV station Al Jazeera aired a tape showing armed kidnappers holding three Romanian journalists who disappeared in Baghdad on Monday.
The tape shows the three Romanians and their American translator, sitting on the floor with two men pointing guns at them. According to Al Jazeera the journalists were held by an unknown group that made no demands.

CAIRO -- Anyone visiting Souad Ali's modest flat in downtown Cairo is accustomed to hearing the 65-year-old woman reciting the Koran and talking about how much she misses her three children who live in Qatar. Her plan for this summer was to go and visit them.
But life as Souad knew it came crashing to an end when her son, Omar Ahmed Abdullah Ali, was identified as the perpetrator of the March 19 car bombing that killed a Briton outside a theater near a British school in Qatar's capital Doha.

The report said that his chief of staff destroyed three years of documents after the announcement of an inquiry into the program, and that "serious questions" remained about the business dealings of Annan's son Kojo.

Man kills sister in new Jordan 'honor killing'

AMMAN -- A man stabbed to death his sister in Jordan after finding out that she had agreed to an unofficial marriage with a man who subsequently disappeared, security sources said on Sunday.
The woman, 30, a resident of the Schellner Palestinian refugee camp in the northern province of Zarqa had "told her elder sister she made an unofficial marriage with a young man", a common practice among young people in the kingdom.

KAMPALA -- Thousands of mainly Muslim demonstrators took to the streets of the Ugandan capital on Tuesday to protest against a proposed law that would give women equal rights in marriage, separation and divorce.
As many as 3,000 noisy protestors chanting and carrying placards, said that the legislation, known as the Domestic Relations Bill, would undermine the Islamic faith and force Muslims to abide by Christian traditions.

This rather mysterious statement can be understood when one realizes that since 2003, the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Kafr Akab - with 20,000 Jerusalem residents - has been cut off from the body of Jerusalem by the separation barrier, which our government terms, "The Jerusalem Security Envelope."

Public prosecutors in the industrial city of Setubal, just south of Lisbon, have charged two young women who had abortions as well as a nurse who allegedly carried out the procedures in exchange for around 400 euros
Abortion is banned in Portugal except in cases involving rape or where there are serious health concerns.

Gov. Blagojevich issued an emergency rule Friday compelling pharmacists to dispense contraceptives even if they believe the drugs kill the unborn.
An Osco pharmacist refused in February to dispense "morning- after" pills to two women, telling them they could come back later and ask for a different pharmacist. Osco and the American Pharmacists Association backed up the pharmacist's right to invoke the state's "conscience clause."

THE UNCOMPROMISING birth control policies promoted by Pope John Paul II were embraced wholeheartedly by the church in the predominantly Catholic Philippines, which has one of the highest birth rates in Asia and tens of millions living in poverty.
Condom use is almost non-existent and poor birth control has left the country sitting on a demographic timebomb which has pitted advocates of birth control against the highly influential church over its spiralling population.
With a birth rate of 2.4 percent annually the Philippines could see its population double from the current 84 million within the next 30 years according to the government's Commission on Population.

Forecaster Predicts Active Atlantic Hurricane Season
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 04 April 2005: - - MIAMI - Like last year, the coming Atlantic hurricane season will be fiercer than normal, with a heightened probability of a major hurricane making landfall in the United States, a noted forecaster said on Friday.
Following one of the most destructive hurricane seasons recorded, Colorado State University professor William Gray said 2005 would see 13 named storms, of which seven would turn into hurricanes. He predicted three major hurricanes with winds exceeding 111 mph (180 kph).
The long-term average for the Atlantic basin is 9.6 named storms and 5.9 hurricanes, of which 2.3 are intense hurricanes, per season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. "All of the information we have collected and analyzed through March indicates that the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season will be an active one," Gray said in a statement.
"We anticipate tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic basin in 2005 will be about 135 percent of the long-term average. We also estimate the probability of US major hurricane landfall to be about 140 percent of average."
The 2004 hurricane season spawned 15 tropical storms, of which nine developed into hurricanes. Four of those slammed into Florida in a six-week period, causing total damages of around $45 billion, which far exceeded the $25 billion cost of Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Fifty-seven people were directly killed by the storms in the United States, and another 152 died from indirect causes -- a toll that paled in comparison to the 3,000 drowned or buried under mud after Tropical Storm Jeanne swept over Haiti.
Other Caribbean islands like Jamaica, Grenada and the Cayman Islands were also badly hit last year and the Caribbean as a whole suffered in excess of $3 billion in damages.
Gray and Philip Klotzbach, an atmospheric research scientist at Colorado State University, said they might increase their predictions for the number of storms in 2005 if weather conditions continued to point to a lack of significant El Nino conditions in the Pacific this year.
The El Nino weather phenomenon produces a distinct warming of Pacific waters and tends to suppress storm activity in the Atlantic.
"If the next few months verify our beliefs about the lack of significant El Nino conditions, it is likely that we will be raising our forecast numbers in our coming May 31 and Aug. 5 forecast updates," Klotzbach said.
In December, Gray's team published an initial prediction for 11 tropical storms and hurricanes in 2005.
US hurricane experts say the number of hurricanes appears to increase and decrease in multiyear cycles and the Atlantic may have entered a 30- to 40-year period of greater storm activity after several decades of relative calm.
Unlike weather researchers elsewhere, US experts reject suggestions that the heightened storm activity could be due to global warming, rising global temperatures that many scientists say are caused in part by industrial pollution.

Balkans: The Former Yugoslavia And The Pope
It was only natural that the first Slavic pope attracted particular attention in a country whose name translates as "Land of the South Slavs." He was warmly greeted by Croats, Bosnian Muslims, Slovenes, and Albanians on his visits to the region, but he never fully overcame deeply rooted mistrust by the Orthodox toward him as head of the Roman Catholic Church.
News of the death of Pope John Paul II on 2 April brought a stream of condolences and laudatory messages the following day from across former Yugoslavia. Croatian President Stipe Mesic said in Zagreb that the pope was "a proven friend of Croatia and the Croatian people, and an advocate of our right to freedom and independence and our integration with the European family of peoples," RFE/RL's South Slavic and Albanian Languages Service reported. "We will cherish forever his visits to Croatia. Up to 2,000 people are feared dead on Indonesia's Nias island off the west coast of Sumatra following an 8.7 magnitude earthquake that struck over-night, Reuters reports. The shock came just before midnight on Monday, destroying most of the buildings on the island.
