Ocean's heat transfer system 'at risk'
The impact of global warming on the vast Southern Ocean around Antarctica is starting to pose a threat to ocean currents that distribute heat around the world, Australian scientists say.
Melting ice-sheets and glaciers in Antarctica are releasing fresh water, interfering with the formation of dense "bottom water", which sinks 4-5 kilometres to the ocean floor and helps drive the world's ocean circulation system.
A slowdown in the system known as "overturning circulation" would affect the way the ocean, which absorbs 85 per cent of atmospheric heat, carries heat around the globe.
"If the water gets fresh enough ... then it won't matter how much ice we form, we won't be able to make this water cold and salty enough to sink," said Steve Rintoul, a senior scientist at the Australian government-funded CSIRO Marine Science.
"Changes would be felt ... around the globe," said Rintoul, who recently led a multinational team of scientists on an expedition to sample deep-basin water south of Western Australia to the Antarctic....
...Rintoul, who has led teams tracking water density around the Antarctic through decades of readings, said his findings add to concerns about a "strangling" of the Southern Ocean by greenhouse gases and global warming.
Australian scientists warned last month that waters surrounding Antarctica were also becoming more acidic as they absorbed more carbon dioxide produced by nations burning fossil fuels.
Acidification of the ocean is affecting the ability of plankton - microscopic marine plants, animals and bacteria - to absorb carbon dioxide, reducing the ocean's ability to sink greenhouse gases to the bottom of the sea.
Rintoul said that global warming was also changing wind patterns in the Antarctic region, drawing them south away from the Australian mainland and causing declining rainfall in western and possibly eastern coastal areas.
This was contributing to drought in Australia, one of the world's top agricultural producers, he said.

There was a half-hour delay before his appearance - the kind of procedural wrangling between Democrats and Republicans that exasperates him, given his stress on time running out and the need to put political differences aside.
Mr Gore said he had recently returned from the UK, where there was a consensus among Labour and the Conservatives on the need to tackle global warming and the debate was on how best to do this. He contrasted this with the US, and the questions from the committee confirmed this: Democrats in agreement with him while Republicans questioned the science, the need for more regulations and the costs.

The Bush administration ran a systematic campaign to play down the dangers of climate change, demanding hundreds of politically motivated changes to scientific reports and muzzling a pre-eminent expert on global warming, Congress was told yesterday.
The testimony to the house committee on oversight and government reform painted the administration as determined to maintain its line on climate change even when it clashed with the findings of scientific experts. James Hansen, who heads the Goddard Institute for Space Science in New York, said in prepared testimony: "The effect of the filtering of climate change science during the current administration has been to make the reality of climate change less certain than the facts indicate, and to reduce concern about the relation of climate change to human-made greenhouse gas emissions."

As a matter of fact the surface winds have increased significantly and it is easy to see where WAIS is receiving heat from. When examining closer the surface winds, they are highest at the lower elevations as the heavier air decends form The Blue Ice. It is these lower elevations where damage is done to the iceshelves and the ice terraces that protect the base of The Blue Ice. I don't believe any of this biotic damage should be taken by anyone lightly.
The jet stream is calm. It's boring. No real turbulence that we saw earlier. It's not carrying heat over the Blue Ice. Therefore, one has to come to some kind of conclusion in that when Vostok is at warmer temperatures, 'the heat transfer' over the Blue Ice is having an effect on the severity of the coldness in that location. In otherwords when the heat is carried by the Antarctica vortex over the Blue Ice there is a heat transfer that SUBLIMES the Blue Ice enough to cool the air mass causing it to become heavier than the surrounding air mass of the lower elevations and it' decends to the lower elevations.
Now, I also stated as the sun migrated to the north, hopefully the 'heat' over the Blue Ice would abate and this cycle would stop. I still am hopeful that will happen because the lower altitude reporting stations are not severely hot today, just yet. That could change quickly.

However, and this is a big however.
The jet stream would reveal a mixing of the high troposheric air masses that are directed toward the ice continent.
Now.
Why is it that the Blue Ice is heating and then WAIS. The heating on The Peninsula in the year 2007 is expected, El Calafate validates that. The latitudes of The Peninsula and Patagonia are very close to each other and are reflective of the Earth's tropospheric heating. But, what's this phenomena with The Blue Ice followed by the heating over WAIS?
Well.
The heat is therefore not directly connected with the surface of Earth, now is it. It is getting it's heat source at very high altitudes/elevations and 'decending' onto The Blue Ice.
I realize when Vostok is subzero Centigrade no one is seeing that as an issue with The Blue Ice but that is the wrong point of view. When Vostok is extremely cold the question still remains how 'VERY' cold is it.

When looking at Australia the pictures gets a little bit more ugly. The 'colors' of the heat currently over Antarctica reflects the heat seen over WAIS.
HOWEVER. And this is a big however.
There is no direct migration onto the Antarctica continent that DIRECTLY affects the shorelines or WAIS.
Mystery deepens.
El Calafate, Argentina is the Patagonian Ice Fields. The current conditions at El Calafate considering it's the Patagonian Ice Fields is not a pretty picture:

The vortex just south of Alaska, which is technically called 'The Arctic Oscillation' is actually anti-cyclonic. Oops. That's not good. One rarely sees an anti-cyclonic flow in the northern hemisphere yet one so dynamic and large. <

UNISYS Hemispheric Water Vapor Satellite
The worst of it starts at the equator, passes over Panama, traverses Haiti and has it's vortex center circulation just east of Iceland. The vortex 'flow' then completes it's movement by passing south over The Greenland Ice and Laborador, Canada.
One more time before moving on. The hot spots today in the north are over high elevation ice formations

The Southern Hemisphere
The heat is still over the Blue Ice. The 'vortex/jet stream' over Antarctica can be noted in a leisurely meander around the continent upto latitude 45 degrees which is the third 'complete' ring out from the center OR the fourth ring if one notes the partial ring at the continent. There is no heat intrusion from the surrounding areas that would ONLY deposit heat over the Blue Ice while sparting the shoreline.
