I congratulate Senator Mike Lee for his concern regarding the USA munitions provided to Syrian rebels and their best outcome. It has always been the concern of this blog that such ventures into CIA operations be ended whereby weapons are provided to rebels without any sovereign validity. It is pure foolishness to conduct such relationships.
We have seen the result of American munitions legitimately purchased and authorized to the Iraqi government become possessions of Daesh and turned on the very people who are citizens of Iraq. It is very bad policy to allow the free flow of millions of dollars US munitions into rebel territory.
The USA has been involved in killing people for far too long. Any regime change has to come through peaceful measures inspired by legitimate elections. As we know President Assad is the legitimate president of Syria. He currently has the authority of enforcement to the laws of Syria. The people of countries like Syria need to develop political parties that begin with local elections of their elder council. From there expertise can be part of international talks regarding the equity of their interests at the national level. I sincerely believe before the USA dives into providing small arms to any rebel group there needs to be a relationship to build on.
In the USA we have annual meetings of mayors. It would be a welcome change to see that level of organization internationally. The UN is fully aware of the annual meeting of mayors in the USA.
I rather see the USA develop mitigation talks with rebels and established sovereign governments to provide incentive in moving toward shared governance. There simply is not enough religious peace in the middle east to believe these peoples can work out tensions without an international platform.
If such a structure existed the invasion into Iraq could not be conducted by "W." Established peaceful mitigation of conflicts in a country would bring clarity to the issues and the best outcomes to all the religious and ethnic groups.
When the USA assisted the Kurds to save the lives of the Yazidis (click here) it was the right thing to do. However, the intelligence regarding the place where they lived and dire need for protections and/or extraction was non-existent. That is not a country ready to understand where and when genocide is possible. The USA has sincere lack of information through their 'on the ground' intelligence services. TOO MUCH CYBER AND NOT ENOUGH SINCERE INTELLIGENCE.
Perhaps, Senator Lee can take the lead to find a method with the United Nations that begins peace talks to turbulent areas of Earth. If there was a venue between President Assad and the rebels before the violence broke out, Syria might not have experienced the ravages of Daesh. The same would have held true with Iraq. The goal should be to end the need for lands where refugees reside.
Of course, Senator Lee should expect sharp criticisms with the demand such efforts begin with Palestine.
