Hale gets max: 40 years in prison

Red-faced with emotion and proclaiming his innocence to the end, white supremacist Matthew Hale cited the "Star-Spangled Banner," cried, yelled and pounded his fist in a two-hour courtroom argument Wednesday, desperately urging a judge to not send him away to "die in a hole."

Jan. 8, 2003 -- Matt Hale, one of the nation’s more high-profile white supremacists, was arrested today in Chicago on charges he solicited the murder of a federal judge.
Hale, 31, of East Peoria, Ill., was arrested as he arrived at a Chicago courthouse in connection with a separate matter — a contempt of court hearing related to a trademark-infringement lawsuit.
