'We didn't expect a monster like this'
From the New York Times a fascinating article about how parents love their children.

The CDC, NIH, WHO are all extremely worried about a Level Three Virus that will kill anyone infected with it.
Anthony Fauci, director (click here) of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Sunday he's "very concerned" that the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota will lead to a new surge in COVID infections.
The rally kicked off Friday in South Dakota's Black Hills and is expected to attract roughly 700,000 people for a 10-day event geared toward motorcycle enthusiasts. But as the highly contagious Delta variant continues to spread across the country, Fauci and other public health officials are sounding the alarm that the rally could cause a massive new outbreak.
"I'm very concerned that we're going to see another surge related to that rally," Fauci said Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press....
Does she work for FOX News? I thought for sure she worked for FOX News. No?
Maria Elizabeth Grabe and Lelia Samson, both of Indiana University Bloomington, say their study employed a young woman with a low waist-to-hip ratio who presented a local newscast.
In one version, the woman wore a tight-fitting dark blue jacket and skirt featuring her waist-to-hip ratio, bright red lipstick and a necklace and in the second version she wore a loose-fitting dark blue jacket and skirt, no lipstick or necklace.
The researchers asked some 400 study participants -- men and women -- to complete a questionnaire on what they recalled from the fake newscast.
The study, published in the journal Communication Research, found the male participants saw the sexualized version of the female news anchor as less suited for war and political reporting, but they recalled less news from the sexualized than the unsexualized version of the news....

What's news to you, it ain't news to me
What's news to you, it ain't news to me
And what's blue to you, it ain't blue to me
It ain't blue to me
It ain't new to me
Hurt me, then tell me, "Stand up"
Ask me questions then don't care about the answers
Hurt me, hurt me, oh
But can I let you go to anybody?
Never in a million (lifetimes)
But my love just reached the ceiling
What's news to you
What's news to you, it ain't news to me
And what's blue to you, it ain't blue to me (blue to me)
It ain't blue to me
It ain't new to me
Deep down, I feel tied down
Sometimes it's my own
Doing that makes things
Come to fruition, babe
Can I let you go to anybody?
Never in a million (lifetimes)
But my love just reached the ceiling tonight
What's news to you
What's news to you, it ain't news to me
And what's blue to you, it ain't blue to me (blue to me)
It ain't blue to me
It ain't new to me
What's news to you, it ain't news to me
What's news to you
What's news to you, it ain't news to me
And what's blue to you, it ain't blue to me (blue to me)
It ain't blue to me
It ain't new to me
I got used to your bad side, baby
I got used to your bad side, baby, oh
Oh
Oh
You got a volume nobody's heard
Promised me something, not with your words
You told me there's nobody else
But I see different
And I know different (different)
I seen different
I know
I know (I, I)
I know
Yeah, I know, I know (ah)
Used to your bad side, baby
I got used to your bad side, baby
I got used to your bad side, baby
Elections have become big business. It isn't about what is good for the country anymore.

The families of those lost have to find closure. Closure is an overused word, but, it applies in this dynamic.
As the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaches, (click here) the White House is defending its handling of classified federal evidence that victims' families have been seeking on the role that Saudi Arabia possibly played—even as some of those family members say President Joe Biden should skip memorial events this year if the documents aren't released before then.
"Our hearts are with the families who lost loved ones on 9/11—especially in these days preceding the 20th anniversary of the attacks coming up just next month," White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Friday. "The White House Office of Public Engagement and the National Security Council staff have had several meetings with groups representing the families of those who perished on 9/11 regarding their document requests and to hear their thoughts on policy priorities that will continue to be a priority."
Nearly 1,800 people directly affected by the attacks signed onto the letter saying they won't welcome Biden to events honoring the victims....

A couple of things about lawyering in the State of Michigan. One is about Flint.
By Bronson Christian
“This ruling sends a resounding message: attorneys who neglected their oath to support the Constitution by taking part in election lawsuits based neither in fact nor reality not only undermined our legal system – they did irreparable harm to our election processes and will be held accountable,” Attorney General Nessel said. “These sanctions affirm that although severe damage was done by these baseless lawsuits, the democratic foundation on which this country was built remains intact and the rule of law still prevails. I appreciate my team’s dedication to pursuing these sanctions on behalf of the State and I sincerely hope Michiganders take note of this pivotal ruling.”
Alongside AG Nessel in pursuing sanctions against plaintiff attorneys were Dominion, Facebook, Center for Tech and Civic Life and Pennsylvania....

Flint - Seven months (click here) after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer capped how much Michigan taxpayers would pay in criminal defense fees for current or former state employees charged in connection with the Flint water crisis, the spending ceiling has been lifted.
The legal team representing former Gov. Rick Snyder and a spokesman for the Governor’s Office told MLive-The Flint Journal that a revised standard contract put forward by the state no longer includes a maximum payout of $175,000 per case for each of nine individuals indicted by a one-man grand jury in January....
President Biden's Justice Department MUST press charges against Ron DeSantis for child endangerment.

A battle is brewing in Florida (click here) over whether students will have to wear masks when they return to the classroom this fall.
Several Florida school districts are keeping their mask mandates in place for the upcoming school year, despite an executive order by Gov. Ron DeSantis that leaves it up to parents to decide whether their children wear face coverings in school. School boards that don't eliminate mask mandates could face the loss of state funding.
South Florida's Broward County Public Schools, the second-largest district in Florida, cited safety as its top priority announcing the decision to maintain its mask requirement pending further guidance from the state as coronavirus cases surge in Florida.
The Sunshine State has seen a rash of new COVID-19 infections in recent weeks. On Saturday, it recorded 21,683 new coronavirus cases, its highest single-day total since the pandemic began....

Lithium is the new gold. Or. Is it?
Ganfeng Lithium, (click here) the world's biggest lithium company by market capitalisation, said on Thursday its subsidiary would invest a total 8.4 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) in two projects that will make "new-type" lithium batteries.
China's Ganfeng is best known as a supplier of battery-grade lithium to clients including electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla (TSLA.O), but also makes batteries and last week secured 973.1 million yuan of investment in battery unit Ganfeng LiEnergy, including from electronics giant Xiaomi (1810.HK).
Ganfeng LiEnergy will spend 5.4 billion yuan to set up an industrial park in Chongqing, southwest China, with annual battery production capacity of 10 gigawatt hours (GWh) and an advanced battery research institute, Ganfeng said in a filing....

Chinese giant CATL’s first generation of sodium ion batteries (click here) are entering the market in 2023. If the company makes up for the lag in energy density, the new technology may become more competitive than lithium-based solutions.
Lithium ion batteries are dominating the global energy storage market including electric vehicles. However, the sector’s rapid expansion is fueling price growth and drastic shortages are possible as soon as next year. Also, quality lithium ore is scarce and producers across the world are under fire for extensive water consumption in the process and other environmental impacts. Sodium ion batteries are the main pretender to the throne.
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), which rapidly ascended to the third position in the market capitalization list of Chinese companies, excluding Hong Kong, presented a solution that it claims is already more competitive in the field of integration efficiency, performance in low air temperatures and charging speed.

President Donald Trump (click here) -- back in the final days of his presidency -- didn't exactly make a secret of his effort to overturn the election he'd just lost and so it's very easy to get tired of thinking about it, now that he's out of office and his official powers have been clipped.
But in addition to the lies he was spreading all along, we continue to learn new and distrubing details about his obstinate and pernicious efforts to poison the system from within, which included an "Apprentice"-style showdown between two top Justice Department officials at the White House and threats of resignation.
Woven together, they show that Trump's assault on democracy, which looks more and more like an attempted coup, was even more reckless and insistent than previously thought.
The recent news includes these items:
Trump pressured acting DOJ officials like acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen on December 27 to "Just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me and the R (Republican). Congressmen," according to the notes of acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue's notes, shared with House investigators.
A day later, on December 28, at least one acting DOJ official, Jeffrey Clark, who was in charge of the civil division, apparently bought into Trump's lies, or wanted to assuage him, and drafted a letter suggesting there were election irregularities in the election (there weren't), but it was rebuffed by other top acting officials.
Officials like Rosen's chief of staff Patrick Hovakimian drafted letters of resignation in case his boss was pushed out in favor of Clark....
