More has changed in the past few years for women (click here) who allege rape than in all the decades since the women’s movement began. Consider the evidence of October 2014, when an audience member at a Hannibal Buress show in Philadelphia uploaded a clip of the comedian talking about Bill Cosby: “He gets on TV, ‘Pull your pants up, black people … I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom.’ Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches … I guess I want to just at least make it weird for you to watch Cosby Show reruns. Dude’s image, for the most part, it’s fucking public Teflon image. I’ve done this bit onstage and people think I’m making it up … That shit is upsetting.” The bit went viral swiftly, with irreversible, calamitous consequences for Cosby’s reputation....
Rape is such a terrible problem in the USA. We are witnessing it's tolerance on college campuses and in our military. It truly is everywhere. And now there are ghosts from the past that won't be silenced.
I have told the story about a dear friend of about twelve years now and her PTSD. It is disabling. She was raped. She was separated from a cheating husband when he found his way into her apartment one night and he raped her. That rape was a long time ago.
Her life today is focused on her family. Her family is lovely. She is loved by her family and in turn has people to love. She has a pet golden retriever named Lucy. She lives simply and has several friends of which I am one. Her life is fairly normal until one spends an entire day with her and witnesses the pills she takes to remain in the world she loves.
She has at times broken out of the medication regime only to be haunted by feelings of dread and suicide. See, that is where the PSTD lies. It lies in the world of the dead. When she has a break through it is an emergency and her doctors quickly see her and adjust her medicines. It has been years now since she has been hospitalized. She calls me when she feels she is having problems she can't surmount.
I don't know why most people simply think rape is sex. I mean we live in world with fifty shades of gray, right? So, there are the S&M enthusiasts that are tied and bound for pleasure. So, to actually have it occur surprisingly means to lie back and enjoy the orgasm.
If people could see the aftermath of rape they would come to understand the sincere and deep psychological pain that accompanies it. The rape occurs not with an orgasm, but, with brain survival centers fully alive to try to stay alive. Those survival centers make a permanent imprint on the mind and a monster is born.
My friends outcome to her rape is not unusual. There are women all over the world suffering from a rape that never goes away. Never goes away. So, to have so many women come forward to be their own support group is somewhat satisfying. I can appreciate their willingness to speak out about their experience.
"Vanity Fair" and "The New Yorker" should receive awards for their willingness to bring these stories forward. They are important, the women are important and perhaps the USA will finally appreciate what creates a woman's nightmare.
