It is stated there are significant numbers of civilians dead. I don't know if it could be done differently.

Syria is a complete loss. There is very little to salvage from the four year war. It will need international help when Dae'sh is finally gone.

Amude – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) (click here) have captured an ISIS headquarters in Western Manbij, that has been for long used by the radical group as a command centre and logistics hub, the US-led coalition said on Tuesday.

Human shields. The civilians' dead are more caused by Daesh. When it comes to ending war the last battles are the most difficult. The SDF need to answer the people as well as any international human rights group.

“The Da’esh headquarters, located in a hospital, was being used as a command center and logistics hub. The SAC [SDF] also seized a significant amount of the city during the operation, which provided civilians the opportunity to escape,” the coalition said.

According to the coalition, the SDF forces continue to fight ISIS on four fronts within the city of Manbij, “carefully clearing territory toward the city center while ensuring the safety of any civilians who still remain,” the coalition said....

So, is Daesh dead? Maybe. There is a report of a helicopter shot down in Libya with two French soldiers dead. As the land available to Dae'sh in Syria is very limited now. There are still battles on going in the country and in Iraq, but, the war is being won there. The worst of Dae'sh ran from Iraq and Syria into Libya. The refugees coming into the Greek islands are telling horrific stories at the hand of Dae'sh.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (click here) says Islamic State fighters in Libya are facing the "distinct possibility" of defeat in their last stronghold and are likely to scatter elsewhere in the North African country and the region.

The UN chief said in a new report to the UN Security Council that member states estimate there are between 2,000 and 7,000 IS fighters from Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Mali, Morocco and Mauritania.

Ban says one member state recently reported between 3,000 and 4,000 IS fighters in Sirte, the extremist group's last bastion along Libya's northern coast....

It was an illegal and immoral war. It is about time people wake up to that reality.

"With this pledging conference, the international community has rallied to demonstrate its continued support for Iraq and its commitment to meeting the ongoing needs of the Iraqi people, especially women and youth," the release explained.

Canada’s latest pledge is part of a $1.6 billion commitment to Iraq and the region that was first announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in February, the release noted....

Remember how "W" and Cheney stated Iraq with it's oil income could pay for all the country's bills. Right? What happened to oil? Hello?

The Iraqi government has announced (click here) a two-day mandatory official holiday beginning on Wednesday due to a heatwave.

A statement issued by the Iraqi cabinet said temperatures were expected to soar above 50C (122F). It is the first heat advisory issued by the Iraqi government this summer.

The public holiday will apply to all government workers.

High temperatures in summer are common in Iraq, and endemic electricity outages make life harder for Iraqis when temperatures soar. To cope with the heat, Iraqis either stay indoors or swim in rivers. In some public places, showers are set up for those who want to cool down.

It is not uncommon for such public holidays to be declared when heatwaves hit during Iraq’s long, hot summers.

Congratulations to Donald Trump on becoming the Republican Party nominee.

It is a Tea Party Convention. Family are at the center. The only speakers that haven't been rhetorical are the real people including Donald Trump's family. All Paul "no clue" Ryan proved yet again rhetoric is the only way forward. Could you imagine how completely boring an establishment Republican convention would be. At least the delegates actually have dialogue to hear rather than applauding on cue.

I know that is the problem with the American who is used to hearing only rhetoric of talking points. How do people think if they only hear phrases. This should be a welcome change for the Republican Party, they actually have to pay attention to think abput what was said.

I saw a report that Sarah Palin was at home with her son, a continually struggling veteran. I hope he is doing better.

Europe is a bit behind the security paradigm because they have been relatively safe up to now.

Great Britain is further along in their domestic security infrastructure primarily because of it's participation in the Iraq war and earlier attacks on a bus and train. But, once the infrastructure is created, the attacks diminish and are thwarted.

The issues with domestic terrorists is important and the infrastructure makes the difference. In cutting spending on domestic and foreign intelligence is absolutely stupid. The infrastructure is successful and should be maintained and expanded, both within the USA and with it's allies. 

Why expand it? Because our allies aren't within the zone of safety with a huge influx of people from war torn areas such as Syria.

It seems odd to me Germany of any of the allies is having a problem. It was Germany that discovered Mohammad Atta before the September 11, 2001 attacks. Is Germany slipping a bit or does it's infrastructure have to be beefed up to cover the immigrants and refugees from a war zone.

The information provided by Germany before the September 11, 2001 attacks by al Qaeda were ignored by the USA. While intelligence is important, there has to be leadership that takes it seriously.

Wurberg, Germany — The Islamic State (click here) claimed responsibility on Tuesday after a 17-year-old Afghan who came to Germany as a migrant attacked passengers on a regional train with an ax before he was killed by the police, a development that is likely to intensify fears that the huge influx of migrants poses a security threat.

The announcement, in a bulletin issued in Arabic and English via its Amaq News Agency, came after German authorities said that investigators had found a hand-drawn flag of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, in the room of the Afghan teenager, along with notes in Pashto indicating that he might have been self-radicalized.

Approximately 1.5 million migrants have applied for asylum in Germany in the past 18 months, but the enthusiastic welcome they initially received has given way to one of increasing concern as the euphoria of generosity is overshadowed by the difficult reality of integration....                        

Ms. Joni Earnst is the Republican that fell on her face yesterday evening at the RNC Convention.

To begin with the speech was lackluster. But, then Earnst laid out a myth that was to insure new rhetoric would be spun by someone, anyone. It was a gamble with odds like the slots in Vegas.

"...the FBI has said Isis is in all 50 states..."

Last night was a chance Ernst could have made a great speech to launch herself as a potential presidential candidate in the future, but, instead she can now be called "Earnst, the Spin Queen."

"This is sort of the new normal," Comey said in July after announcing the arrests of 10 people believed linked to Islamic State plots, including some suspected of planning attacks to coincide with the July 4 holiday.

That was a statement by Director Comey last year. What is ignored in the comments is the fact there have been successful arrests and prosecutions of Daesh sympathizers since it became a terrorist group a year or so ago. There have been plots against the people of the USA since September 11, 2001. The SBIs across the country have been picking up threats and short of a few domestic terrorists that have killed Americans within the country's borders the threat has been stopped.

Ms. Earnst makes a wide sweeping statement as if the country's intelligence doesn't work and it is up to the citizens to defend itself. That plays into Republican rhetoric demanding small government. The facts are clear, the FBI and the SBIs have been finding and prosecuting threats successfully. If government were as small as the Republican federal budgets would make it, Americans would have a profound problem.

Melania Trump stated she wrote the speech. I think it is possible for her to have a parallel life of achievement to another special woman when she was introducing her husband.

The press is sensitive to plagiarism. They'll debate the similarity of Melania's speech and Michelle Obama's speech forever.

Melania Trump is a lovely lady. She is more than capable of writing an important speech. She is also more then capable of carrying a First Lady's schedule of purpose. She may find she has to schedule in time to be her son's mother as well. She is a devoted mother and spends a good deal of time with him. The campaign leading to the results in November will bring about a different demand on her time.

I am willing to say it is nothing more than Happenstance. She loves her husband and believes in his leadership. There are limited ways of saying things. I think it is simply wrong to attack a candidate's wife.

I can't believe the venom. Well. Welcome to politics Melania Trump.

She won't find generously among many people. Perhaps I am the only one. When Hillary Clinton was at her husband's side in his first election, the attack was about baking cookies. It would be good if Melania knew which cookies she was best at baking. When John Kerry was in an election run, his wife Teresa was terribly harassed by those seeking to disqualify her from being a legitimate First Lady. Teresa Heinz-Kerry is a wealthy woman with a charmed life. She was berated because of it.

Melania Trump is now exposed to the politics of the USA and how depraved it actually is. She should not try walking on eggshells, it never works out in the long run. She'll be fine and a wonderful prospect as our next First Lady.

Okay.One last time.

Benghazi is a closed case.

It is believed a better military response could have been put forth. That came from the very first study conducted by Admiral Mullens who was the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. 

Admiral Mullens has an untarnished reputation. He also was the one military leader who went to Pakistan to speak to the President about the Haqqani network. It was the first time the Haqqani network was as much a problem as the Taliban. He went to Pakistan and spoke the unspeakable. He put his life on the line to bring a vital message to a dangerous place that the USA is not happy with any of the terrorist groups in the region. Up to that point Haqqani got a pass. They no longer are excused from sharing the instability in the region. Admiral Mullens did that.

I've always admired him. When he spoke to the public while war was raging he pulled no punches and told the truth. A rare quality. When he filed his findings on Benghazi I had complete confidence in his committee's work. Why? Because he loves this country.

How many inflammatory and political committees came after that? Eight? 19? Or was it 64 like the vote on the Affordable Care Act? CONGRESS HAS NO REPUTATION THAT UPHOLDS THEIR WORK. They are nothing but political hacks that waste the time of people working for the USA government at the cost of millions to the American taxpayer. I want the RNC and the individual campaigns to pay back those millions of WASTED dollars to the USA treasury. 

The final committee of the USA House came back with the exact same findings as the work by Admiral Mullens and his committee. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I am not going to apologize to Patricia Smith due to the death of her son. She is doing exactly what the Congress did in regard to Benghazi. She took her son's dedication and honor and bank rolled it for the Republican Party. I've heard of opportunistic stardom, but, this is shameful.

The Baton Rouge police investigation is correct to investigate every aspect of the attack on the officers.

There are some interesting parallels between Dallas, Orlando and Baton Rouge. The gunmen were well trained and came by car to kill police or in the case of Orlando, the LGBTQ community. They used military style weapons.

Their movements shows a gunman with knowledge enough to track down police and engage them. Orlando was simply a bloodbath.

I still think police should be given every advantage to save their own lives in methodologies that are current and not simply traditional. I am hearing how one officer left his safe place and put himself in danger to aid another officer. Fine. But, when the gunman continued to hunt them down it risked more deaths and there were definitely deaths achieved. Had the officer remained in place the killing might have ended.

Soldiers may simply have skills that make attacks similar. There probably is no conspiracy or central adviser. 

Police leaders have to rethink the methods of their officers, unfortunately.

It is my opinion the gunmen makes plans and uses his own intelligence gathering before embarking on these attacks. There has to be some clue as to such preparedness.

They didn't kill where they lived. They expected to get away. Let's face it, if all the police are dead or injured there won't be witnesses. These gunmen make up their minds what the outcome is going to be and I believe they intend to live through it to escape.

The USA military is trained in urban warfare and that is the techniques they are applying to their victims.

Fracking creates pollution in the air that cause asthma attacks.

The rash of fracking wells began with the Bush/Cheney Energy Policy. In order to carry out this boom all the environmental policies were suspended. The environmental laws that have protected Americans since the 1970s were disabled to allow profits.There is just no conscience only profit driven policies. No containment plans, no advanced technology, nothing to justify fracking over ride environmental policies, simply profit.

The fracking industry likes to brag the technology has been around for over 60 years. That is correct. Sixty year old technology, long before there were environmental laws. That is what a Republican administration called policy.

A new study found that asthma patients in Pennsylvania (click here) living near unconventional natural gas developments, also known as fracking, were up to four times more likely to experience an asthma attack.
The study, released Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, classified asthma exacerbation into three categories: mild or needing medication, moderate or needing an emergency room visit, or severe, needing hospitalization.
Asthma patients living close to more or bigger natural gas wells had a higher risk of attacks in all three asthma stages, said lead author Sara Rasmussen, a Ph.D candidate at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School at Public Health.
Researchers found that the greater risk showed up in all four phases of well development: pad preparation, drilling, stimulation — the actual fracturing — and production....

The American Lung Association states the very same thing I did above. The US EPA needs to end the emissions.

We believed then and continue to believe now that there is a very real and unacceptable risk that the air emissions from increased oil and gas production would make people sick and shorten the lives of those living in communities in New York where the extraction will take place. Fracking would drive changes that would increase air pollution in areas of the state that now benefit from clean air....

This is air pollution. The flame does not solve any problem, it spews pollution, too. The noise pollution is considerable. 

The wrong decision by the judge was rendered.

The accused in the death of Freddy Grey are not guilty because they didn't know the paralysis is happening?

That is amazing.

You mean to tell me because police are not MDs they can't be held for their lack of care in habeas corpus. That is completely ridiculous. Freddy Gray lost the ability to stand and move his legs. He also stated there was something wrong at one point in his transfer.

I hope Baltimore appeals the Judge's decision. Ordinary care has to take place when a citizen is in the care of authority.

Judge Barry G. Wilson has reinforced rough treatment of citizens by the police. This is outrageous. There was plenty of evidence. A dead man is one of them.

Williams said prosecutors had failed to meet their burden of proving the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, instead asking the court to rely on "presumptions or assumptions" — something it cannot do. He said the court "cannot be swayed by sympathy, prejudice or public opinion."...

Interesting, today is the last day of "The National Black Police Association" convention (click here).

The organization will hold a national education and training conference from July 31 thru August 7, 2016. 

It would be good if media and government would turn to such organizations for perspective when emergencies in the country occur. I think organizations representing minorities in the USA should be the first spokes persons during such emergencies.

If anyone is looking for the establishment Republican party it won't be found in Cleveland, Ohio. This is finally the Tea Party convention.

"Black Lives Matter" is a cliché and nothing more. This petition is political and designed to create inflammatory mockery of the White House as to it's loyalty to black people in the USA.

Those that brought this petition and promoted it should be ashamed of themselves.

The cliché, "Black Lives Matter" developed out of the need for a commonality with the deaths of innocent black men. Those deaths still exist as legitimate over reaching by authority. The cliché sought to identify a reason why so many black men were dying without reason. The people affiliated with the words "Black Lives Matter" still have an unfulfilled mission in that methodologies need to be tried to eliminate the degree black men die over white men due to gun violence. There is a problem. A deadly problem. There needs to be a solution. That hasn't been found yet.

Baton Rouge, La., July 17 (Reuters) - A decorated ex-U.S. Marine sergeant (click here) opened fire on police in Baton Rouge on Sunday, killing three officers, nearly two weeks after the fatal police shooting of a black man there sparked nationwide protests, one of which was shattered by the massacre of five Dallas policemen.
The suspect, dressed in black and armed with a rifle, was himself shot to death minutes later in a gunfight with police who converged on the scene of a confrontation that Mayor Kip Holden said began as an "ambush-style" attack on officers....

One gunman is not a movement to end the unjustified killing of black men in the USA. There are going to be mimics. There is not a lot that can be done about that short of better domestic intelligence.

There are too many guns on the street in the USA and it has police poised for to kill at first glance. The police officers killed recently needs to be a wake up call to the lethal permission Americans can own guns.

There are few things (click here) in nature I enjoy more than watching a massive full moon rising over the horizon. This is truly a treat everyone should experience at least once, and when you do you’ll surely raise the same question as every other moon gazer: “Why does the moon appear so large when it’s rising, and smaller when overhead?”

A simple question without a simple answer.

Many believe the Earth’s atmosphere somehow acts like a lens and magnifies the moon’s appearance, but this is just as wrong now as it was when Ptolemy suggested it 20 centuries ago.

More likely is that it’s related to how we humans have evolved to perceive rigid objects appearing near the horizon.

Whatever the cause, try estimating the moon’s size the last time you saw it rising in the east and compare it to a familiar object — say, your hand. For example, hold your little finger at arm’s length and it will subtend to your eye an approximate angle of one degree; your fist also at arm’s length will appear about 10 degrees across....

Most Americans don't read scientific journals. The closest they get to one might be Scientific American or Popular Mechanics which are perfectly good publications, but, if Americans did read professional journals, what would they know?

They would know the scientists taking care of American forests already know what the capacity for carbon sinks in the USA. They would know their country was way over it's carbon budget. 

Now if Speaker Paul "No Clue" Ryan wants to talk about balanced budgets he needs to first deal with balancing the USA Carbon Budget. No other budget for the country is possible until Americans understand and realize the importance of balancing their carbon budget to the perfection outlined by its scientists.

Our school population ranges from 1600 to 1700 students where 69.5% of the students are low income and 66.8% are English-Learners. The majority of our population is comprised of Hispanic/Latino (57%) and Asian (32%) students. ⁶ In 2012, YBHS scored 683 on the Academic Performance Index (API) and did not meet the target of 689. ⁷Currently the school is in its fourth year of Program Improvement which is called the Restructuring Stage, which requires the development of an alternative governance to create a plan of major restructuring within the school. ⁸ YBHS also struggles with a graduation rate of only 65% which is significantly lower than our district's graduation rate of 76%. Many of the students who will participate in this unit will be the first in their family to pursue a college degree. ⁹

The audiences for this curriculum unit are 10 ^th/11 ^th/12 ^th grade general chemistry students and AP chemistry students. Students opting to take general chemistry typically intend on furthering their education in college because chemistry is a required course for college readiness. Most students who take AP Chemistry are interested in pursuing a science major and take AP chemistry as a way of preparing for their general chemistry course in college. The unit will mainly focus on general chemistry students as the audience but can be modified for the AP chemistry curriculum. It is my intention to teach this unit to the general chemistry students at the beginning of the 4 ^th quarter during the stoichiometry unit and give students the opportunity to revisit thermochemistry. AP chemistry students will take on this unit in the middle of the 6 ^th quarter....
