From article above:
Just when you thought the 'summer' couldn't get any worse, torrential downpours yesterday turned into the sort of weather usually only encountered in winter.
Last night, astounded rush-hour commuters had to make their way home through hailstorms.
Thunderstorms swept across the South of England, bringing nearly 7mm – more than a quarter of an inch – of rain in an just an hour.
In South London, large hailstones turned streets into winter wonderlands.
People making their way home wrapped up and had to tread carefully as streets became ice rinks.
Stylist Sarah Burns, 36, from Brixton, said the hailstones were 'pretty fearsome'.
'They were pretty big hailstones,' she added. 'At one one point, I thought they would break through the window. They were shooting down the chimney and skidding across the floor. It was quite frightening.'
In Ipswich, two teenagers were taken to hospital after being struck by lightning. The force of the strike blew apart the girls' shoes.
With the tennis at Wimbledon now well behind schedule, one forecaster has predicted summer will last for just one day – Sunday, July 15.
A Met Office spokesman said: 'The bad weather does seem to be refusing to budge and it has been unusually unsettled.'
But there is some good news – they are predicting the weekend weather may be 'quite pleasant'.
