Are these not some of the most loved products and companies in the country?

Warren Buffett's top dividend stocks (click here)

Despite Berkshire BRK.A +0.10%   BRK.B -0.11%  achieving a $24.1 billion net gain for shareholders and the conglomerate’s book-value rising 14.4% in 2012, he deemed it a “subpar” performance.
“For the ninth time in 48 years, (click here) Berkshire’s percentage increase in book value was less than the S&P’s percentage gain (a calculation that includes dividends as well as price appreciation),” wrote Buffett, who for decades has measured Berkshire’s overall performance in terms of book value....
...Buffett told Berkshire shareholders that paying them a dividend from the company’s large cash stockpile would be detrimental to the value of their shares over the long term.
“Dividends impose a specific cash-out policy upon all shareholders,” he said. Many shareholders, he added, would prefer to sell a portion of their stock and create their own income stream, or have a lengthy time horizon and therefore “should prefer no payment at all.”
Dividends also are tax inefficient, Buffett said. All of the cash from dividends is taxed every year, he pointed out, whereas shareholders are taxed only when they sell....
Buffet recently has sold some of his smaller stock holdings. He stated the returns were flat lining. One was Walmart.
In my opinion, it is the return of the USA local economies. Americans learned their lesson in 2008 and the development of local economies while trusting people that live in the community with quality control has the best return in life.
In return, Buffet reduced three stocks. (click here) The biggest changer on the short side was Mondelez.

Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT 71.790.97) has a market capitalization of $230.02 billion. The company employs 2,200,000 people, generates revenue of $446.950 billion and has a net income of $16.454 billion. The firm's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) amounts to $34.688 billion. The EBITDA margin is 7.76 percent (the operating margin is 5.94 percent and the net profit margin 3.68 percent).
Financial Analysis: The total debt represents 27.62 percent of the company's assets and the total debt in relation to the equity amounts to 74.92 percent. Due to the financial situation, a return on equity of 22.55 percent was realized. Twelve trailing months earnings per share reached a value of $4.86. Last fiscal year, the company paid $1.46 in the form of dividends to shareholders....

A little surprised about Archer Daniels Midland Company. I see ADM as a moral choice. They are very involved in alternatives to the traditional chemical industry. They have significant manufacturing plants for ethanol in the USA. It is involved in American agriculture in a big way.

...Since joining ADM, (Patricia A.) Woertz (click here) has led the company to record financial results while growing its sourcing, transportation and processing networks through select acquisitions, strategic capital investments, and a number of global joint ventures and partnerships.  She has also worked with ADM’s board and senior leadership to strengthen the Company’s strategic focus and planning, and to promote safety, continuous learning and sustainability initiatives companywide....

He may not like her global focus. Bringing a lot of international flavor to a company does dilute economics in the USA. She has lead any company she worked for into international relationships, including China. That is not necessarily Buffet's enthusiasm. But, Buffet likes Berkshire Hathaway to out perform other companies with a healthy margin.

...She serves on the board of directors of The Procter & Gamble Company and the US-China Business Council.  She is a member of the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum and The Business Council. In 2010, she was appointed to the President’s Export Council by President Obama....

He is right. She is everywhere. Holding too many companies reliant on each other's performance is not good. It is like holding shares in one company rather than a diversification to 'hedge' markets. Yep.

The surface area of the sink hole is not necessarily it's depth.

There are companies that can mitigate these damages. There payments are suppose to be covered by homeowner's insurance. But, there is a blog stating the insurance companies are becoming more and more resistant to paying the claims. With an increase in the occurrence of the sink holes that will create reluctance to cover the damages by insurance companies.

...Jeff Bush was in his bedroom when a sinkhole opened up and trapped him underneath his home at 11 p.m. Thursday.
While the sinkhole was initially estimated to be 15 feet deep on Thursday night, the chasm has continued to grow. Officials now estimate it measures 30 feet across and is up to 100 feet deep. (click here)
The Hillsborough County Fire Rescue has set up a relief fund for all families affected by the growing sink hole....

The actual depth of the sink hole is filled in by falling debris. So, while the surface appears to be about 30 feet deep, the actual depth of 'instability' can be far more.

Remco is an example of a remediation company. (click here)

Our clients have depended on us for quality geotechnical services for over 25 years. We provide a variety of geotechnical services including ground improvement, rock slide stabilization, excavation shoring, sinkhole remediation, encapsulation grout of hazardous materials, and controlling of underground liquid migration. We are committed to (1) the safety and well-being of our employees and our clients, (2) achieving technical excellence in the design and installation of our projects, and (3) providing our clients with service that exceeds their expectations.

Another name for a sink hole is 'bridging.' Bridging happens when a granular material becomes tightly packed and provides a solid surface. The area below the 'bridge' is actually unstable and filled with air space or shifting material. The collapse is what is called a sink hole.

One of the most dangerous bridging materials has been agricultural grain in a silo. The grain would be removed from the bottom to feed cattle or milking cows and the grain would bridge at the top. Farmers have been known to die when they entered the silo to break up the bridge.

Today, many silos are replaced with more sophisticated mechanized systems and this doesn't occur anymore. But, the basic dynamics are the same. Something occurs underneath the granular material and it eventually gives way to the void.

Government needs to pay attention to what is occurring here and stand with the consumer when they have paid for homeowner's insurance. There also needs to be assessment of the areas in Florida more frequently when drought occurs. That is true for any of the soils that can dissolve into sandy and dangerous outcomes. The USGS would have an inventory of such soils and where they are found in the USA.

We have noticed a growing trend in the past year or so that many insurance companies are hiring different lawmfirms left and right to handle their sinkhole work. It used to be that when an insurance company found a law firm they liked and thought did good legal work they would stick with them for years and trust their advice, and listen to their advice. I dont know why lately it seems that many insurance companies will hire multiple law firms for one case, sometimes changing law firms three times during one case or hiring two law firms to team up against us on the same case. I can only speculate because I do not have any insight as to why this is happening. Strictly my guess is some of these insurance companies want a law firm that will be overly agressive on their behalf and a law firm that will agree with their recommendations. If that is the case, things are completely backwards now. It is supposed to be that the client listens to its lawyers advice but it seems the trend now is the lawyer is listening to its clients advice and if the lawyer doesnt agree with the insurance companies approach, they get fired and the insurance company finds a lawyer who will go along. - See more at: http://sinkholedamageblog.com/#sthash.5l0m43KI.dpuf

One other aspect is when water is diverted for agricultural use leaving such soils void of stability. Before there is water diversion for agriculture every means possible should be instituted to understand exactly where the water is actually being diverted from. This is not an outcome that should be allowed in any water diversion program.

This is also are reason for planting agricultural crops with deep roots. These crops are not annuals, they are perennials. These perennials add stability to soil and fight drought and erosion. There are lots of reasons to abandon old farming practices, including, annual seeding.

I think it was battered woman's syndrome. There was far too much rage.

I don't doubt she lied, but, a woman who believes she is facing death herself will lie. There is no reason not to.

It brings me to my favorite pet peeve regarding some relationships. There is this 'attitude' that is accepted all too often where relationships are permitted to be sadomasochistic. S&M relationships do not have to include violent behavior, but, it can. One of the aspects of S&M relationships is humiliation. Unless that tee-shirt is a joke at a party of some kind or another; that is humiliating. I would never wear a tee-shirt stating I belonged to someone else regardless of whom that was.

I don't know what the sexual activity was like between her and her lover(s), but, if this is an indication of where she fell into relationships, I am not surprised there was rage within her that found it's way to the surface. I don't approve of S&M relationships. There are all kinds relationships that actually uphold the idea of subservience to maintain the relationship. That is simply wrong. It victimizes women. I don't care how anyone wants to uphold the 'concept.' The idea a man has complete control over a woman, her behavior and even her thoughts is abuse. It just absolutely is.

I have no doubt Ms. Arias has a borderline personality disorder. But, to realize how it may have been developed is something a psychiatrist has to address. If there was oppressive demands on her in the relationship; that will mitigate the trial's outcome. It should at any rate.

S&M is a bedroom antic. It can be fun. You know? A Dominixtrix is a venture into Halloween outfits. Basically. Dressing up as a Maid and all the cuteness that occurs in sexual behavior is healthy and fun, but, it is just that, FUN. It goes on. Meeting a husband at the door wrapped in saran wrap and all that nonsense is simply adding spice to life. But, to define a relationship with that as a basis of understanding is not at all healthy. I do not appreciate any man or woman who seeks to own another person in a relationship. There is mutual respect or there is nothing.

I have my doubts about her and her life and what brought her to this point. Unless there was some kind financial gain, an insurance policy or someone waiting in the wings for her to be free of her relationship there is enough here to cast doubt about her emotional stability.

As far as I am concerned, anytime a dysfunctional relationship results in abuse, beating or murder there is a reason for pause about the ultimate sentence. Automatically. There is that shadow of guilt by the other party that drives a person to act in ways that is outside their normal purview.

There are many women in prison for The Burning Bed. When is that going to be defined as self-defense and not murder? I have never heard of a Burning Bed manifesting in relationships where the woman was endeared in a loving way to her spouse. It is always a nightmare. I heard many stories I could write that would reveal living nightmares women live, but, in court it rarely holds up. Why? That question should be a topic of a documentary.

When a relationship is over, it is over. To have a relationship linger for purposes of financial need is dangerous. It brings me to state, every man and woman needs a way of supporting themselves outside a relationship. Education is important from the high school diploma through PhD. There is no one person that should be in relationships without a way out. Every relationship should be an open door, married or not. Dependency is for children and not adults.

The Lies:
Arias gave three conflicting stories to police, (click here) losing any perceived credibility she may have had. The prosecution made a point to attack Arias’ credibility by showing extensive portions of her interrogation videos, spanning several days during the testimony of the investigating officer Detective Esteban Flores.
-   Version 1: She said she wasn’t even there.
-   Version 2: She said she was at the apartment with Alexander but two masked robbers (at first two males, then later in the same interview it became one male and one female) came into the apartment, murdered Alexander, and let Arias go. She told Officer Flores she did not tell anyone because she feared for the safety of her family. Arias loosely compared it to the show The Sopranos.
-   Version 3: She acted in self-defense against an abusive ex-boyfriend that became   enraged when she dropped his camera and she had to protect herself by stabbing him 27 times, slitting his throat, and shooting him in the head.

It appears the USA House is going through a 12 step program to reduce the strain on military transports,

posted Wed 27 February 2013 02:30 PM
House Speaker John Boehner (click title to entry - thank you) today House members that they may no longer use military aircraft for domestic or international trips because of forced spending cuts imposed by the looming sequester, set to go into effect Friday.
The move effectively puts on hold so-called “CODELS” or congressional delegation travel, often overseas, which regularly involves military aircraft and has to be approved by the Speaker.

Jessica Yellin also started the gotcha question about skeet shooting. So, the entire scope of questions at times seems more trivial pursuit than actual journalism, but, there is that 'odd' messaging in the viewership of CNN and FOX. So, in an off-handed way the Yellin questions are important to those seeking tabloid journalism in place of facts and information. Whether that has merit in White House Press discourse is the question. Does the National Enquirer have White House press credentials?

But, the House Speaker uses commercial airlines to travel and now is demanding the House members to stop seeking free travel on military transports.

Sink Hole prone counties need to rethink their strategy for property values and safety.

A massive rescue (click here) shifted to a recovery effort Friday after a giant hole swallows up the bed where a 36-year-old man slept.

People shouldn't be living there anymore. Seriously. Now, human death because of it. The rate of sink holes has increased by 300% in four years. Between drought and storms the land is becoming more unstable. Hillsborough County is considered to be a Moderate Drought area. It is near Tampa. USGS needs to perform some testing. It has nothing to do with politics. This is about land and it's stability in a changing climate. Water can be as much a part of the integrity of Florida soils as the type of stone.

North Korean TV - Kim Jong Un and Dennis Rodman Meet, Kiss - Harlem Glob...

The Harlem Globe Trotters have been ambassadors of peace for a long time. This is not new. (click title to entry - thank you) I wish I knew what she was saying in English. Obama: I can't 'Jedi mind meld' Congress

Others have tried and it got ugly !

President Obama's Presidency

There is a reality being missed regarding all these efforts by President Obama. I would call it "Keeping it Real," but, the Republicans would call it "Destroying the Party." Through all these engagements with the public and speeches, President Obama is trying as hard as he can to remove ideology from the workings of the government. He is very much seeking to return function to government.

Up to now, he has been willing to 'go along, to get along' with the Republicans, but, at the basis of his efforts both stated and unstated is 'the will' to return the government to the people without the rhetorical nature of it all. He is trying to clean up the language. This term is obviously a return to solid language, even in his inaugural. He wants to speak the language of the people, not the political dialogue of any party.

What was startling to me within the speech in Virginia was the idea "The Sequester" was not at all necessary. It didn't seem at all within the reality as I know it. But, the President is strongly dividing the Budget from the National Debt. He wants job growth to overtake "The Sequester." He is correct. We still  have a generation UNDER-employed.

When it comes to the debt during these times, we need to minimally address the interest on the debt with goals to address more of it.

Erskine Bowles, (click here) a co-chair of the president's bipartisan deficit-reduction commission known as "Simpson-Bowles," has called the nation's compound interest burden one of the biggest long-term challenges facing the United States.

As a nation, we should never tolerate under employment nor poor wages to our citizens. The USA is not for sale to Wall Street. To that moral end, we have an obligation to increase taxes, increase employment and raise the minimum wage. If President Obama is convinced he can undo all the poisons in our government and increase the quality of life of all Americans we need to pay attention.

To address Senator Bowles, who served from 2005 to 2010 as a Democrat, there needs to be understanding to a 'tipping point' where the interest on the debt becomes a burden too difficult to handle. We may already be there, but, that is what is most important to me. If we are to grow our country back to vibrancy and equity to all Americans, we need to know the limits and how to adequately address them to avoid them and move away from their sharp edges. If there are sharp edges. No disastrous words, but, a simple understanding where the limits to RECOVERY occurs that actually leans into sovereignty.

Argentina, which probably is no accident to the passions of a former governor, is a good example of over reaching. And in all honesty when the assets of a government become coveted by creditors; the creditors need to know there is no hope in recapturing their debt in a real way, so why bother. I mean who is going to buy an aircraft carrier and have the right to use it? Won't happen, nor should it. If nothing else, the private sector is a dependent on government, so the entire mess is hideous.

Creditors are trying to seize the property of Argentina, which defaulted on its bonds in 2001. Could the same thing happen to the U.S.? (click here)

January 15, 2013|Michael Hiltzik
You know all those warnings about how America's addiction to deficit spending is going to make us look like Greece?
Stop worrying. The bigger concern should be that America will look like Argentina.
That could happen, theoretically, if the threatened refusal by Republicans in the House to raise the federal debt limit leads to a default on U.S. government bonds. How bad would it be, you ask?...
...Experts in international finance say a U.S. bond default, even if "technical" and even if it lasts a day, puts us in uncharted territory....

I do believe the debt cuts are wrong for the year we live in.

Medicare is effected by $85 billion over ten years, but, I have no problem with the military cuts. The military cuts are overdue. The fact it is broadly distributed is the problem, but, the military budget is out of control because it is FREE MONEY to the states. The military also has to bring it's spending back within the boarders of the USA, too. The Defense Department is seeking to do that, by the way. It is not a radical idea.

So, some of the political spin by Republicans is that Medicare has been cut by the President. That is not accurate. That is GOP rhetoric. We know all to well how Republicans want to eliminate the social protections for our seniors and disabled. Medicare is not protected by the Social Security Act. It is different legislation. Medicare was signed into law by President Johnson on July 30, 1965.

On this day in 1965, (click here) President Lyndon B. Johnson signs Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans, into law. At the bill-signing ceremony, which took place at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, former President Harry S. Truman was enrolled as Medicare's first beneficiary and received the first Medicare card. Johnson wanted to recognize Truman, who, in 1945, had become the first president to propose national health insurance, an initiative that was opposed at the time by Congress....

Former President Harry S. Truman was the first person to sign up for Medicare. At the Medicare/Medicaid bill signing ceremony on July 30, 1965, in Independence, Mo., President Lyndon B. Johnson enrolled Truman as the first Medicare beneficiary and gave him the first Medicare card. Truman’s wife Bess was the second person enrolled in Medicare.

President Harry S. Truman (click here) is credited with being the first person to suggest that a national health care program through the Social Security system was needed for people. In a November 1945 address to Congress, Truman called for the creation of a national health insurance program to be run by the federal government. He wanted the program to be open to everyone with no enrollment requirement. Beneficiaries would pay a monthly fee for the program, which would cover any and all costs for medical services, including doctors, hospitals, labs and dental services. The government would pay the costs of the doctors participating in the program.

McConnell will filibuster any legislation. He doesn't care, any reason to filibuster is a good reason. "The Sequester" has been a Republican political strategy before it ever was written.

No one can deny that. It is known.

End of discussion about blaming. If an Obama Administration proffered it as a method to end the dead lock, the proposal existed within the House already.

The nation now knows where this horrible idea came from. There is no shifting baseline on BLAME. It came from the Republican Tea Party and Speaker Boner caved because of the Hastert Rule. That same extremist wing of the Republican House, lead by Eric Cantor, then made a fool of the Speaker when they walked away from Plan B that was to extend the Bush Tax Cuts for incomes $1 million  or less per year. They went home for Christmas instead. (click here)

...Both sides still hope the other will either be blamed by voters (click here) for the cuts or cave in before the worst effects - like air traffic chaos or furloughs for tens of thousands of federal employees - start to bite in the coming weeks.

Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, all but killed any hopes that President Barack Obama and top leaders of Congress can hammer out a deal in talks that begin shortly after 10 a.m. EST (1500 GMT).

“I'm happy to discuss other ideas to keep our commitment to reducing Washington spending at today's meeting. But there will be no last-minute, back-room deal and absolutely no agreement to increase taxes,” McConnell said....

Senator Reid needs to bring the The Financial Transaction Tax to the Senate floor.

It is an important tax for the USA with estimates of treasury income to $100 Billion annually. This tax would stabilize the rapid transactions to be instituted by private firms with their high speed cable which will rob pennies a second from investors. It will give them pause to their exploitative intent to control wealth unilaterally. This tax is a requirement to equitable trading.

For Immediate Release: February 28, 2013

Washington, D.C.-The Center for Economic and Policy Research (click here) released the following statement from co-director Dean Baker on the introduction of the Harkin-DeFazio bill:

"The Harkin-DeFazio bill provides a way to raise a substantial amount of revenue while at the same time making our financial markets more efficient."
"The modest tax would discourage an enormous amount of short-term trading while having almost no impact on the ability of markets to finance productive investment. The cost of the tax would be born almost entirely by the financial industry, since for most investors the money saved as a result of lower trading volume will offset the higher cost of trades.

"At a time when Congress and the President are looking to cut Social Security, Medicare, and other essential programs, the idea of getting $40 billion a year from taxing speculation in the financial industry looks very attractive."

The bill is out of committee and once on the Senate floor it would be more than interesting to find the lack of a filibuster or not. The markets are complaining it would cause such incredible harm to them and even Obama's nominee Jack Lew is complaining it would be adverse because the investment community would have incentive to under report and literally rob the treasury. That seems to me to be the most lame excuse I have ever heard to institute a tax that would not only return equity to traders without incredibly high speed access to the markets, but, provide revenues to the USA Treasury.

WASHINGTON | Mon Feb 25, 2013 10:55pm GMT

U.S. President Barack Obama's Treasury Secretary (click here) nominee Jack Lew, in a written response to a Republican senator weighing his nomination released on Monday, said the White House still opposes the tax.
"The administration has consistently opposed a financial transaction tax on the grounds that it would be vulnerable to evasion, create incentives for financial reengineering and burden retail investors," Lew said.
Little support has emerged in Congress for instituting such a tax, which is firmly opposed by Wall Street banks.
This is the case even though 11 European Union countries, including Germany and France, this month agreed to a trading tax that would raise up to $45 billion (29.6 billion pounds) annually.
Lew, expected to win Senate confirmation as early as this week, also cited scepticism from the International Monetary Fund about the tax in a statement answering questions from Orrin Hatch, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee.
The EU tax would be set at 0.01 percent for derivatives and 0.1 percent for stocks and bonds. Further approvals are needed in the EU before the transaction tax becomes a reality.
At a Washington think-tank seminar on Monday, European Union tax commissioner Algirdas Semeta said the only way to avoid the tax would be to give up all financial trading in the countries where it will be imposed....
I mean, Jack Lew's opposition is because it may be difficult to enforce? I thought Senator Warren asked the members of the administration why there aren't more banks taken to court proceedings. So, Jack Lew needs to think twice about what approach the administration's Justice Department takes to prosecution of financial institutions. These institutions tend to be trouble makers without a conscience. Additionally, I find it absolutely astounding an administration Secretary would shy away from any law because of enforcement; that is the role of government; to intervene in inequity and enforce the laws of the USA. Jack Lew's opposition leans into the venue of corruption.

Yesterday, Robert Reich stated "The Sequester" was conceived as a Tea Party political strategy after their rash of victories in 2010. They have since lost seats in the House. But, Reich goes on clearly to illustrate how "The Sequester" (which the word is best assigned to the living agreements of Pope Emeritus Benedict and the Rome Catholic Church) was the devil's spawn to implode the federal government.

Posted 28 Feb 2013
...Sequestration is only the start. (click here) What they set out to do was not simply change Washington but eviscerate the U.S. government — “drown it in the bathtub,” in the words of their guru Grover Norquist – slashing Social Security and Medicare, ending worker protections we’ve had since the 1930s, eroding civil rights and voting rights, terminating programs that have helped the poor for generations, and making it impossible for the government to invest in our future.
Sequestration grew out of a strategy hatched soon after they took over the House in 2011, to achieve their goals by holding hostage the full faith and credit of the United States – notwithstanding the Constitution’s instruction that the public debt of the United States “not be questioned.”
They elicited a binding agreement to large, arbitrary (“sequestered”) spending cuts if they and the Democrats couldn’t come up with a more reasonable deal in the interim. But they had no intention of agreeing to anything more reasonable. They knew the only way to dismember the federal government was through large spending cuts without tax increases....
Reich is closer to the truth than anyone wants to admit. Discussions outside of DC noted that rhetoric regarding the nation's equity even with a large budget is intact. There was openness to the ability of the administration to fund the budget without cuts and the political Washington rhetoric caused the assault against CREATING JOBS.

No doubt that is the case, however, there is the issue beyond the budget to the nation's debt crisis. To that end cuts are a way to begin to absorb the nation's debt. I have no doubt Mr. Reich and others are correct in stating the nation's budget is funded which is different than balanced. But, the national debt needs to be funded as well. So, while 10 percent seems draconian to many when the USA still needs to elicit a higher jobs opportunity, there is the issue of the debt and it's interest.

...A measure written by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., (click here) would place a 0.03% levy on financial trading in stocks and bonds at their market value. It also would cover derivative contracts, options, puts, forward contracts and swaps at their purchase price.

“A financial transactions tax is essentially a sales tax on investors,” Kenneth Bentsen Jr., SIFMA executive vice president for public policy and advocacy said in a statement. “At a time when we face a slow economic recovery, such a tax will impede the efficiency of markets, and impair depth and liquidity, as well as raise costs to the issuers, pensions and investors who help drive economic growth.”...
...Financial markets in countries that have adopted a financial transactions tax have suffered asset price decreases, lost businesses to other countries and experienced a loss of liquidity, Mr. Bentsen added.
Mr. Harkin implied that the financial industry is crying crocodile tears over a small charge on daily trading.
“This measure is not likely to impact the decision to engage in productive economic activity,” Mr. Harkin said. “There's no question that Wall Street can easily bear this modest tax.”
The point is to curb the high-frequency trading that injects volatility into the market and turn the attention back to capital formation, according to Mr. DeFazio.
“They don't make things,” Mr. DeFazio said of Wall Street. “They don't feed people. They churn. We have to begin to rebuild the real economy.”...
This tax is more than simply income to the USA, it is necessary to assist other countries, including allies, to stop cross border movement, too. The EU tax begins in 2014. Wall Street is already seeking to evade the transaction taxes globally in markets where they are instituted. For the USA to undermine the European Union's tax is unconscionable. The EU needs to income, their countries populous is smaller and their treasuries more vulnerable to global impacts, so tax in the USA will also provide stability to global initiatives to create equity in the markets. This is more than simply looking for monies for the USA Treasury, it will provide stability in the global markets where it is direly needed.

"Taxing the Speculators" (click here)
By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: November 26, 2009

Should we use taxes to deter financial speculation? Yes, say top British officials, who oversee the City of London, one of the world’s two great banking centers. Other European governments agree — and they’re right.

Unfortunately, United States officials — especially Timothy Geithner, the Treasury secretary — are dead set against the proposal. Let’s hope they reconsider: a financial transactions tax is an idea whose time has come.

The dispute began back in August, when Adair Turner, Britain’s top financial regulator, called for a tax on financial transactions as a way to discourage “socially useless” activities. Gordon Brown, the British prime minister, picked up on his proposal, which he presented at the Group of 20 meeting of leading economies this month.

Why is this a good idea? The Turner-Brown proposal is a modern version of an idea originally floated in 1972 by the late James Tobin, the Nobel-winning Yale economist. Tobin argued that currency speculation — money moving internationally to bet on fluctuations in exchange rates — was having a disruptive effect on the world economy. To reduce these disruptions, he called for a small tax on every exchange of currencies....

Ya think? Of course, since 1972, Mr. Tobin has been proven to be absolutely correct. It is time to stabilize the markets and side with allies.

And here a second source stating the same thing as Dr. Krugman.

FACTS & MYTHS ABOUT A FINANCIAL SPECULATION TAX (click here)
Updated December 2011

- An FST would reduce dangerous financial market speculation. Since the tax would hit high-volume, high-speed trading the hardest, it would serve to discourage short-term speculation in financial markets as well as the proliferation of ever more complex derivatives. More complex financial instruments could be subject to the tax many times over, substantially
reducing the potential profits from such complexity.

No one can object to the reality foreseen by a Nobel Laureate over forty years ago. The foreshadowing is more of a measure to the truth than anyone is willing to admit.

There is no saying "NO VOTE" to this tax. It is well studied and needs to be applied. This is not a shoot from the hip measure. It is necessary as well as prudent.

Bradley Manning never intended to do the USA harm. Quite the contrary, as a whistleblower he sought to save lives.

After admitting guilt in 10 of 22 charges, soldier reveals how he came to share classified documents with WikiLeaks and talks of 'bloodlust' of US helicopter crew

Bradley Manning, (click here) the solider accused of the biggest unauthorised disclosure of state secrets in US history, has admitted for the first time to being the source of the leak, telling a military court that he passed the information to a whistleblowing website because he believed the American people had a right to know the "true costs of war"....

The information released was nothing the American people should not know. As a matter of fact, the information regarding the fallen should have been provided to the families when they were handed a folded flag at the grave site.
Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn stated in an interview with Anderson Cooper there were legislators that left the hearing room before the people from Sandy Hook came into the room. I want to know whom those were that left the hearing room.

While the Senate can't get their act together after walking out on the families of victims, Maryland has passed gun legislation.

Thousands expected in Annapolis Friday as debate moves to House

The Maryland Senate on Thursday approved a sweeping gun control bill that would give the state one of the strictest firearm laws in the country.
The contentious issue moved immediately to the House of Delegates — where the chamber's first public hearing on the bill and a rally by supporters are expected to draw thousands of people to Annapolis Friday.
The Senate's 28-19 vote to support Gov. Martin O'Malley's bill came after more than 12 hours of often emotional debate Wednesday and Thursday. Supporters said the proposal — which would ban the sale of assault rifles and require a license to purchase a handgun — would save lives....

100 Airport Closures

The way this is transpiring is wrong. I am NOT saying that Secretary LaHood is wrong. I am sure these closings were difficult decisions. I am not saying the closings aren't going to happen, but, if the debt reduction over 10 years is to go forward it needs a different approach.

Air Traffic Control Facilities That Could be Closed (click here)

In all honesty, the President needs to move through the FAA over the next year to have public meetings to ask what the best alternatives are for these airports. The cuts should be delayed and accept public comment for the next six months. Solicit comment from these airports specifically, but, ask for public comment and ask these airports to request public comment to submit from their local media.

There is a chance there will be investors that would seek to add private monies to these airports to begin a private holding to pay the air traffic controllers. It would provide an opportunity for the local economy to own their own airport interests and hire the air traffic controllers currently working at these facilities.

If NASA can privatize space interests there has to be a way for these airports to maintain their operations IF they have private investment. Some won't. But, there is a chance some will.

The public comment will provide insight to the demands of these airports and the viability to maintain their current status with private interests. It is a way of moving these airports out of the federal budget and be self supporting.

It is my guess there will be a fair number of the airports that will have private interests to come forward. There doesn't have to be security consequences either. The privatized airports would have to abide by the laws of the USA. They cannot compromise the larger airports by having compromised security. But, it might work and at least the USA has the obligation to try.

I wish Pope Benedict XVI the peace and serenity he seeks.

What did we learn from the victory of Robin Kelly?

Mayor Bloomberg is not a dishonest man. I am quite confident if there was any deception in the message on the behalf of Ms. Kelly he would disapprove of it. He has a sincere sense of balance, too.

What I learned from Ms. Kelly's victory is that when the electorate is given good quality information, they make good decisions. No rhetoric. No shadow of corruption. But, simply good information and how life can be better.

Ms. Kelly didn't win without the support of her electorate and to that end they are better educated today than before her candidacy.

The monies were significant contributed to her campaign to benefit the people of her district. That only goes to show how entrenched the adverse information was within the electorate. It took a lot of education delivered in a short period of time to reach the electorate. That should be a lesson well learned.

Those seeking to reduce the number of guns on the street and make the USA safer and happier need to realize it is a continuous message that people come to understand. An underlying truth if you will. When that truth is substituted with a corrupt message it works just as well when it is not contested.

Passive acceptance of the NRA messaging all these years to benefit gun sales over the best interest of reducing the crimes of violence and a drug culture in the name of the Second Amendment was a level of negligence that the nation is paying the ultimate price.

I wish Ms. Kelly the best in her continued candidacy. We need her.

WASHINGTON--Vice President Biden (click here) said on Wednesday that Robin Kelly's victory in the Democratic primary of the Illinois 2nd District special election underscores that politicians who don't support sensible gun control will pay a price.

On Tuesday, Kelly, a former state senator who made her backing of President Obama's gun control agenda a central part of her campaign, beat out Debbie Halvorson, whose 'A+' rating from the National Rifle Association was consistently attacked by Kelly and other opponents during the campaign...
