28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
29 Then
God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole
earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours
for food. 30 And
to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the
creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of
life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
So, what is happening in this Bible passage of Genesis? Is mankind that of a ruler? Or is mankind that of a steward? Never sacrificing his own WELL BEING for that of other creatures, but, never destroying to eliminate competition for resources that are the by-products of life on Earth.
We know humans have far greater capacity to reason than other living things. We know God put in the hands of mankind the RESPONSIBiLITY to reason. God wants a steward to understand his creation and rule over it to protect it, no different than the air masses of Earth protect all that is living.
The Carrying Capacity of Earth gets very interesting here. It is the sixth day of creation and Earth's biotic content is very complicated. There are enormous amounts of consumption, but, the elemental Earth sustains.
Does anyone believe mankind is suppose to rule Earth to it's exclusivity? It isn't Biblical to do that. There is no understanding in god's relationship with mankind that it was one of permission to consumption of all the Earth. There is no moral content in that interpretation. There is however greed. For if a steward were to consume all that is available, that is the quintessential definition of greed.
The Carrying Capacity of Earth is interesting, complex and measurable. It defines the LIMITS placed on mankind in relation to the world we live in. It states clearly mankind has the ability to reason to protect the world granted to them in opportunity for life.
I propose that opportunity is what we seek to protect when our government regulates the abuses of those less inclined to be benevolent and more inclined to be greedy.
