I think it is time to discern the problems created by the law and the problems created by the private sector. The insurance companies have become completely indelicate regarding the people they are covering and that is nothing new. No one hesitated before the law was passed to point to the disastrous problems within the health care system in the USA. I would expect those seeking the best outcomes, which resulted in the law, of American health continue to call out the lousy actions of the insurance companies. There are no short list of complaints.
The federal government website. I am glad so many state websites are up and working. There are some states still experiencing late start ups due to incomplete webpages. However, as to the federal website and it's capacity one has to begin to look at this realistically.
When realizing the potential volume, which was never planned for when the law was passed, there becomes an unrealistic view of the world. There are something like 30 states that are not participating, so it falls to the federal government to make up for their lack of participation if we as a country are sincerely compassionate to all our citizens.
I want folks to think about that. There are 310 million Americans. How many are in those 30 states?
I don't believe the government website should be any larger in capacity than it is now. If citizens are having trouble logging on, I am not surprised and neither should they be. The fault of this aggravation falls directly on their state for not setting up their websites.
One of the frustrations MODELERS to computer systems (and I am most familiar with the Climate Crisis and understanding Earth) have is the ability of the system they are building to carry large capacity while allowing room for activities within their computer systems. In other words, every aspect of memory and otherwise can be completely utilized which will cause the system to become inactive. Right? Average Americans with computers know that. There is that commercial, what the heck is the name of it?
PCMatic (click here) has those commercials where the computer is slow and the women in the commercials are always complaining, "I have to restart it alot." Right? By the way the website for that program is lying to consumers, nothing is free except the initial analysis that makes a consumer crazy with the idea they have virus and otherwise and only see this program as their savior. It is very deceptive advertising. If PCMatic really wanted to provide an incentive to purchase their programs then provide a completely free one time trial offer to see if indeed they can do the job. That is off topic, but, I don't endorse anything about this product in it's present advertising practices.
Back to the idea of the federal government computer site for health care insurance.
The capacity of the website, although it really isn't the website that has capacity so much as the HARDWARE of computers used to operate the website. The website is the software and the hardware operates the software, right?
The hardware has limits. It just does. Okay?
One of the realities to Modelers seeking to understand Earth is the idea of Supercomputers. Supercomputers are banks of computers and computer capacity that allows modelers to input data as a baseline understanding of the process of the Climate Crisis. Pretty daunting thought, isn't it? Imagine a computer that actually has algorithms written to mimic Earth processes. Intimidating and I congratulate every such Modelers that even attempted to meet the challenge. These are ongoing processes within their computer banks that reveal what Earth is going to look like. It is not an easy task at all to program Geo-physics of a living system the size of Earth. It is complicated as Earth has many layers of troposphere, ocean and land. Altitude. Then add into that there are living beings altering that content on a moment by moment basis. Incredible to think these systems exist and they are working to their capacity to predict. I haven't met a Modeler that is ever finished programming those computers.
Now, take all people in those 30 states and realize there has to be capacity for those people and additional people who are coming into the age of majority everyday. That also is a rather daunting task. As a matter of fact one of the easiest reference right now is the supercomputer center built to accommodate the national security state, the NSA. It is an entire complex of buildings and computers and capacity.
That is what we are looking at if a computer system is to exist that carries the capacity needed to provide services to the population of 30 states.
Now, I don't want to be a party pooper here, but, enough is enough. How many supercomputers is the USA government going to build?
I congratulate President Obama for taking on this challenge and succeeding to the capacity he has been able to provide service to Americans without health insurance. Heroic. Nothing short of.
But, the law becomes law in January. There may have been delays to that because until President Obama got involved there was NO capacity to the website. But, sooner or later and hopefully sooner every American has to be covered by health insurance that will prevent disease and treat it when it occurs to insure longevity and protect the wealth they build.
Americans cannot rely on the private sector to protect them. The private sector has to be regulate and provide options outside the private sector. Now, I have been hearing a lot of stuff that makes no sense to me. One of the complaints is that people on Medicaid now will lose their insurance because now they have to get insurance through the exchanges. That is not the case. Those qualified for Medicaid and SCHIP now will continue to be qualified because of their low income. If ANY such threat is made to a citizen it needs to be litigated with charges equating to that level of fear in those most dependent. That has to be citizens facing ongoing therapies now. They cannot have their therapies interrupted.
There is a dynamic within ETHICAL healthcare called "Continuity of Care." It is paramount to the practice of most physicians, hospitals and their nursing staff. If "The Continuity of Care" is interrupted to any citizen already receiving therapies, there needs to be lawsuits filed against the appropriate insurance company. And there may very well be criminal charges that have to come to bear. Just that simple.
From here forward, citizens are important people to the health care system and not simply a commodity.
The people have to realize just because there is now law to regulate the access to health care insurance; the private sector is not going to stop their shenanigans. It is up to the people to bring their experiences forward to continue to build a competent and compassionate and cost effective health care system. It is possible. I know it is possible. It needs to be a goal to every hospital system in the country.
But, as to the federal computer website, it has limits. It is going to continue to have limits and I advocate paper applications or telephone applications (with copies to customers for their records) filed with income tax information every year there are subsidies used to pay for healthcare. It protects the citizen and the US Treasury. Oversight will be reasonable when records are kept together. Having paper applications and/or telephone applications also lends itself to better confidentiality. The information can't be hacked. There is no computer system that can't be hacked. I could never have the ability to hack a website or computer, but, there are plenty of folks who can.
It is time for the nation to enjoy their holidays, have peace of mind and prepare for January. I think we are doing okay. I hear HHS is suggesting non-prime time for better access. I suggest the nation take that advice and know when it doesn't apply to their lives. Rather than complaining about the computer application and whether or not it is keeping information; take the initiative to overcome any computer short falls in expectations. The system was over sold. I am not convinced those hired to build this computer capacity actually gave the government a realistic picture as to what is possible.
