When I read Middle East newspapers, I read for the leanings, movement toward peace. It is not only lacking in the year 2007, but, the USA has no credibility.
In contrast, Neocons would read the articles in "The Daily Star" for reasons to war. That isn't what I call progress in the Middle East. There exists evidence the foreign policy of the USA wherever there exists speculation for 'reasons for war' in the Middle East has failed.
A country should never allows it's foreign policy to be cut to the bone so the ONLY response is to 'go to guns.' Confrontation of ANY kind is the last option any diplomat should have available to win concessions and movement toward peace and stability. Confrontation ONLY begets more of the same.
We have witnessed over six years of confrontation by Bush/Cheney with the world. As a result, countries there are practicing nothing but protectionism with escalating tensions in the Middle East. We need competent leadership dedicated to peace with plenty of elbow room to work. That does not exist today.
"The Guns" are always there, but, they don't need to be waved in everyone's face; every minute of every day.
