This is a picture of Cameron, Louisiana after "Rita" passed over. After the water receded. The National Hurricane Center is re-examing evidence of the storms of the Gulf of Mexico. I think some of that is misguided. I don't know what they are discounting or counting but when "Rita" passed over Cameron on September 24th it's winds were 105 knots and considered a Cat 3. However. The tidal surge that came with that Cat 3 has left behind devastation that is clearly Cat 5. In pictures all over the Gulf this level of damage is grossly apparent. I believe the damage of these storms are not easily measured on the satellites or the recorded wind as their tidal and wave patterns are extremely damaging. Given that one has to reconcil there may be two forms of category. Wind speed and actual water with wind devastation.  Posted by Picasa
