The acrons are 3/8 to 5/8 inch long, egg-shaped or rounded, brown when fully mature the second year, faintly striped, clustered but predominantly found in pairs, they are capped with overlapping scales and have a stalk/stem. The acorns grow out of the female flower. The cap is actually a result of the protective flower scales.
